Introduction

We had a nice group of 18 tonight in 3 tables of 6. Some really nice wine with some age and and some promising youngsters too. The food and service were outstanding as usual!

Flight 1 - Our Table (11 Notes)

  • 2006 André Robert Champagne Grand Cru Le Mesnil 90 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Light-medium gold color. Had one glass over 45 minutes. Slightly sour apple and mineral with what I swear was some berry despite this being a BdB. Nice overall.

  • 2006 José Michel & Fils Champagne Special Club 90 Points

Light-medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. This was pretty similar to the '06 Robert Le Mesnil really, apple, mineral, very subtle yeast, and good acidity.

  • 2010 Rivers-Marie Chardonnay B. Thieriot Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. This was a bit warm when served, but it still maintained its energy pretty well. I liked the nose with its tangerine and meyer lemons, brisk minerals and light orange blossom notes. The palate had medium body, racy acidity, tangy, good stony minerals, tangerine, meyer lemon, and a very long finish. I didn't really find any oak showing on this tonight either. Impressive, and I suspect even better with a bit more of a chill.

  • 1994 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark red color with a clear 5-7mm margin. PNP, drank 1+ glass over 2 hours. This was in such a great place tonight. Just so elegant and pretty and absolutely delicious to drink. The nose has cherry, spice, wood, leather, earth, florals, and garrigue. The palate has some nice dry extract still, earthy, leather, savory, cherry, minerals, pepper, and a 30+ second finish. I thought this built over the first hour and held up well, no rush. 94+pts.

  • 1999 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 2 hours. This was also quite good, nicely perfumed on the nose, it took a good 20 minutes to evolve in glass, showing darker fruits, damp earthiness, and spice. Refined palate, silky, nice dark fruits, spice, and good herb de Provence character.

  • 2000 Cuvée du Vatican Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Sixtine 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very dark red/purple color. Double decanted for 30 minutes. Drank 1 glass over 2 hours. The nose starts with a burst of cedarbox that completely blows off within minutes, and then opens to a lovely raspberry, raspberry liqueur character with dried earth and dried flowers. The palate is full bodied and deep, layered with red fruits raspberry and cherry, pretty earth and a nice medium plus finish. Still youthful and full of energy. I'll try to wait another 2-3 years before cracking the next one. 92+ to 93pts.

  • 2000 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

VEry dark red color. I don't recall if this got any air. Drank 1 glass over 2 hours. This also opened with a burst of cedar that quickly blew off. The nose has raspberry, oak, exotic spices, fresh herbs. The palate has black cherry, garrigue, mineral, full body, deep, round tannins and a medium finish.. 91+pts.

  • 2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very dark red/purple color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. This was really savory with lots of umami going on scorched earth, tar, youthful, black fruits. The palate was also very savory, scorched earth, deep black fruits, concentrated, youthful, full bodied, spicy and a bit of heat on the finish. There's so much going on here and in another 5-10 years this should be amazing.

  • 2006 Weingut Eduard Hauth Kerpen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

I was too busy pouring and enjoying this to write anything down, but I can say it disappeared rather quickly and was very tasty. Nicely balanced and even Craig claimed he liked it. Well that is pretty good praise indeed. Plenty of tropical fruit and not at all cloying; with some nice spicebox to close it out. Probably going to have to find some more of these.
