Flight 1 (27 Notes)

  • 1985 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut 93 Points

    France, Champagne

    (6/25/2016)

Much better showing than the last bottle. Good nose with plenty of development of rich white fruit. Quite grainy with nice cereal notes. Still very lively and sweet on the palate. Some stony minerality too.

  • 1997 Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    (6/25/2016)

Unbelievable on all fronts. Reductive bouquet with high toned tropical fruit and sulphur. Lots of ripe mango and pineapple. Very fresh. Impossibly precise and pure. Expansive and mouth coating on the palate. Tremendous depth, great acidity, and incredible finish. Complexity is just unreal. Far better in isolation than in a massive vertical. Amazing.

  • 1996 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

    (6/26/2016)

Much better bottle than in the vertical earlier in the year. More reminiscent of a '99 with a fair bit of power and some greener stemmy aromas. Highly expressive and nuanced. Some coffee and mocha on top of robust red berry fruit. Acid seemed lower for '96.

  • 1989 Domaine Robert Groffier Bonnes Mares 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

    (6/26/2016)

Smoky, ashy, tobacco leaf. Very sweaty red fruit, but highly expressive. Lots of juice still. After dinner wine, didn't take good notes but this was really great. Definitely for the fan of more rustic farmy red burgs. Have to try again.

  • 2012 Coche-Dury Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet

    (6/27/2016)

Very approachable for such a young Puligny. Already has a big reductive Coche signature. Very mineral. Off of a wine list, didn't take good notes.

  • 1989 Domaine Joseph Roty Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    (6/27/2016)

Very ashy with lots of scorched earth. Mushrooms and damp soil too. Tertiary and mature. Another after dinner wine without great notes, but really enjoyed this. Loads of advanced flavour.

  • 1992 Philipponnat Champagne Brut Clos des Goisses 90 Points

    France, Champagne

    (6/28/2016)

[Magnum] Not as much effervescence as desired, but still alive and don't have much experience with all Pinot based Champagnes. Lots of orange citrus on the palate. Tangerine. Doughy croissant centre. Not as good as any of the young Philipponnants tasted at the house a few days later.

  • 1964 Moët & Chandon Champagne 91 Points

    France, Champagne

    (6/28/2016)

Very oxidative but very flavourful. Wheats and citrus, nearly beer-like. Nice richness too. Full body with some effervescence hanging on. Good drinking. Found at one of the shops in Beaune for 150€.

  • 1988 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

    (6/28/2016)

Absolutely perfect place for drinking. Fully mature but not tired or unduly advanced. Complex aromatics of leathers, soils, and drying black cherry and currant fruit. Alive with good energy throughout. Ethereal. Beautiful and delicious drinking. Probably the wine of the trip, leading summer 2016 so far.

  • 2001 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

    (6/28/2016)

Again, a better showing than the bottle in the vertical earlier in the year. Awesome aromatics, complex. Deep and concentrated black and red berry fruit on this one. Also somewhat bready.

  • 2001 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    (6/28/2016)

Drank in the Corton-Charlemagne vineyard. Very clean and pure and drinking fairly young. Still has beautiful and complex aromatics. Bright red (cranberry) fruit. Fairly big structured.

  • 2004 Dom Pérignon Champagne Rosé 92 Points

    France, Champagne

    (6/29/2016)

Similar nose to the '05 with developing orange and grapefruit citrus. Denser on the palate. Fair bit of spice here too. Winemaker said ~28% Pinot Noir.

  • 2005 Dom Pérignon Champagne Rosé 91 Points

    France, Champagne

    (6/29/2016)

Blood orange, grapefruit, and that classic Dom rosé strawberry. Quite savoury as well. Winemaker said 14-15% Pinot Noir.

  • 1998 Dom Pérignon Champagne P2 91 Points

    France, Champagne

    (6/29/2016)

Still reading very young and high pitched to this wine drinker. Green berries and grape seed oil. Lime and kiwi. Extremely chalky. Grapefruit developing somewhat on palate. Not even close to the '96.

  • 1996 Dom Pérignon Champagne Oenothèque 95 Points

    France, Champagne

    (6/29/2016)

Brioche beginning to emerge on the nose. Much deeper and with better development than '98 served in the same flight. Rich and also round. Toasted coconut. Haven't had a '96 P2 before but ostensibly it is the exact same wine as the '96 oenotheque. Said the winemaker, "the second plenitude is more Dom Perignon, it is the same expression but in a louder voice, oenotheque has always been a P2."

  • 1983 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon Oenothèque 96 Points

    France, Champagne

    (6/29/2016)

Fantastically expressive and unique nose spanning sulphur, creamy coffee, crisp celery, and speculose. The palate completely melts with caramel and butter with a squeeze of lemon citrus in the back. Traces of smoke as well. Reductive but incredibly fresh. Don't know much about '83 champagne but this was a real curve ball from the winemaker that left everyone very impressed. Released as a P3, not an oenotheque.

  • 1988 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

    (6/30/2016)

Beautiful and complex aromatics of dark leathery fruits, damp earth, and damp tobacco leafs. Fruit is still explosive and expansive on the palate and delivers mature but very robust black and red cherry and berry fruits. Still quite concentrated. In an ideal place for drinking right now as it has great development and maturity but retains impressive vibrancy. A stellar bottle in perfect condition.

  • 2009 Domaine Michel Niellon Chevalier-Montrachet 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

    (7/2/2016)

Good nose of candied pineapple and lemon with some honeysuckle. Supremely rich on the palate but also clean and pure. Pineapple and mango with a slight hint of sulphur. Ripe but with lots of acidity of well, great balance. Good minerals throughout as well.

  • NV Jacques Selosse V.O. Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut 93 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    (7/2/2016)

Lovely nose of ripe apricot, honey, and quite bready. Caramel and coffee tones too. Persistent and consistent effervescence. Very rich and showing awesome development in addition to the usual oxidative house style. Ordered off of a list and was pleasantly surprised and fortunate to see the 2010 disgorgement on the back label.

  • 1997 Pétrus 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    (7/2/2016)

Densely perfumed bouquet of black current and underripe blackberry with lovely damp earth and damp leather. Huge aromatics, pine and red cedar. Incredible power but all attributable to density and not wood or winemaking. Good level of acid, present structure, good maturity. Perfect bottle.

  • NV Jacques Selosse Initial 93 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    (7/2/2016)

[Disgorged 2010]: Cleaner and more precise than the V.O. Last night, if less rich. More citrus, ripe grapefruit, than tropicals. Very honeyed on the nose still. So great to try in an earlier disgorgement.

  • 2006 Domaine Perrot-Minot Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    (7/2/2016)

Young and super fruit driven with a bit of earth sneaking in. Big red cherry and raspberry. Very good acidity provides a lengthy finish. Big tannin present but not off putting. Best on the palate, hedonistic drinking right now for sure. Nose is floral but hasn't developed much complexity yet.

  • 2009 Coche-Dury Meursault Les Rougeots 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

    (7/5/2016)

Lovely nose showing the reductive Coche style with sulphur and and ripe tropical fruits. Expansive and mouthcoating on the palate. Quite savoury and deeply rich. Awesome drinking right now.

  • 2011 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Corton-Charlemagne 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    (7/5/2016)

Indicative of the Corton Charlemagne vineyard with huge power and expansiveness. Very young and quite wound-up at this stage with a fair bit of lemon citrus. Textural on the palate. The acid and minerality here are unbelievable and provide an explosive finish that is nearly too much to handle just now. Opens and grows with time in the glass.

  • 1999 Domaine René Engel Echezeaux 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

    (7/5/2016)

Highly floral and quite green on the nose. Beautifully expressive. Palate has solid development while retaining big tannins and plenty of red berry fruit power. Would love to find more of these. This was quite special, despite the sparse notes.

  • 2002 Jacques Selosse Millésimé 94 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    (7/5/2016)

Heavily oxidative nose, to be expected, with lots of ripe pear and crusty baking bread. Syrupy sweet palate is pieced by crackling effervescence and acidity. Comparable to some of the lieux dits but even deeper and with greater complexity. Awesome and very special drinking.

  • 2002 Domaine de L'Arlot Romanée St. Vivant 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

    (7/5/2016)

Supremely elegant and expressive nose, highly floral, big red and black cherry fruit, and already showing nice forestry notes as well. Very cool, very quiet, ethereal. More mature than anticipated. Precise and focused on the palate with plenty of black cherry and some herbaceous menthol. Gains a bit of gamy meat with airtime. A visit with the winemaker last week suggested this would be a difficult bottle to find but managed to take it off a list in Paris.
