Brisket Bash Deux: 10 Vintage Vertical of Clos de Papes and more

Siggy & Jenny's Place, Mpls, MN
Tasted Saturday, October 29, 2016 by rocknroller with 833 views

Introduction

A second round of Steve's famous Texas beef brisket with around two dozens guests. If we keep doing these, Siggy's going to end up with a BBQ joint here somewhere. Very, very tasty, along with everyone else's culinary contributions. The wine ended up with a strong slant to CDP with a 10 vintage vertical of Clos des Papes. Just getting through that was a challenge with so many other nice wines lurking about.

Flight 1 - Sparklers, Whites, Roses (5 Notes)

  • 2002 Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Rare 95 Points

    France, Champagne

Light-medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over 20 minutes. Another beautiful bottle that was hard to keep in the glass for long. Fantastic nose with great toasted notes, almond, nutty, lemon, pear and fantastic depth and energy while everything translates from the nose with sheer beauty. 95+pts.

  • 2015 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé 93 Points

    France, Provence, Bandol

Light salmon color. Drank 1 glass over 20 minutes plus. Another wine that is very difficult to keep in the glass. This is so flipping good it just glides down before you know what happened. I don't care what it costs, it is the best rose bar none year in year out. Sure there's other good ones and sometimes they hit and sometimes they don't. this has the complexity and intensity of a great wine. Wow, great nose, fresh and alive, wonderful citrus, minerals, a blast of clementines, strawberry-kiwi, and a long penetrating finish. Great acid, impeccable balance, and I'm reminded that I don't drink it often enough.

Flight 2 - Clos des Papes Vertical (10 Notes)

  • 1995 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 96 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

medium dark red color. Slow-O for 1 hour plus, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Drank as part of a vertical of Clos des Papes (95, 98, 99, 00, 01, 04, 05, 06, 08, 09) Wow, fantastic again, and wine of the vertical. I had really hoped this wasn't just a one-off great bottle I'd had before, and at the very least it's a two off J. Killer perfumed nose with leather, dried flowers, earthy, subtle garrigue, red berry and red cherry fruit and spice. The palate is equal to the nose and shows the elegance and depth of classic aged CDP the way it was intended to be. See previous detailed note. 96+pts.

  • 1998 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Flawed

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This wasn't right, not representative of past bottles; stewy fruit, some off putting aromas, cooked at the least. Drank as part of a vertical of Clos des Papes (95, 98, 99, 00, 01, 04, 05, 06, 08, 09)

  • 2000 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Flawed

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Another stewed, heat damaged bottle. I've never had this when it was at its best. Happy to keep trying though. Drank as part of a vertical of Clos des Papes (95, 98, 99, 00, 01, 04, 05, 06, 08, 09)

  • 2001 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. Drank as part of a vertical of Clos des Papes (95, 98, 99, 00, 01, 04, 05, 06, 08, 09) This was very good, showing nice aromatics, garrigue, red licorice, red fruits, and some grip on the tannins; more tart fruit on the palate and a savory aspect too. It is a bit brooding out of the gate, but evolves over 30 minutes. Like many of the '01's this is still youthful and needs air to show at its best. 92 at the outset and 93 to 94 by the end of the glass.

  • 2004 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This was a little further on down the line so it had gotten a bit more air. Delivers on the nose with a classic floral perfume and Provencal dried herbs and fresh red berries, deeper, earthy and more garrigue on the palate, silky, raspberry, a touch of umami here too.

  • 2009 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

This is just a baby and needs more time to fully show, but still it is very pleasurable already. Well layered black and dark berry fruits, firm round tannins, some wood and little alcohol still shows, but on the whole this shows good promise. give this another 3 years or a lot of air. 93(+)pts.

Dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 20 minutes plus. Great nose, red fruited, nice purity, red raspberry, big garrigue notes, wonderful spices, floral, bright nose, white pepper, black olive hints. The palate is medium-full bodied, cherry and kirsch, raspberry undertones, garrigue, pepper, spiced plum sauce, and some round tannins that will sneak up on you. • 2005 Château Lascombes 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Very dark purple/red color. Two hours of air i believe. Small pour. Wasn't taking notes at this point. Good Margaux nose, has that nice core of '05 fruit and concentration, still a bit primary, and some firm tannins. I think this is going to be much better in an another 3-5 years. The trio of 02, 03, and '04 are prettier right now and more ready. 92(+)pts.

  • 2008 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Small taste, no notes, very good, could use a little more time, but for a wine I like old, it showed well after a hoard of Clos des Papes.

  • 1975 Château Suduiraut 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

  • 2005 Domaine des Baumard Coteaux du Layon Clos de Sainte Catherine 95 Points

France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Coteaux du Layon

Medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over 20 minutes. You can read my previous notes on this. I find it absolutely delicious. There's good body, but not as unctuous as a Sauternes, yet there is this freshness to the fruit and lift that makes it irresistible. Oh, and acid, nice acid.

Closing

The Clos des Papes were fun to drink with many excellent wines and couple bottles that were cooked. The '95, '99, '04, and '01 in that order for me tonight. The '98 and '00 were just too stewed and off.

Craig would have lamented that we didn't have enough whites and Sparklers :)
