Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
Musk and talc, lemon and floral notes. Has more cut than the 2015 Eden and shows better for it. Nice length and balance. Looks like 2016 might be a strong vintage in Clare.
Lime, floral - quite lifted nose with some slate as well. Good punch on the palate, steps up very well from the entry level 2015 Eden, with more texture and spark. Very good.
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
Toasted oats, straw and lemon. Palate is fairly worked, gives a bit of an illusion of complexity for early drinking. Not bad but not a buy for me at the price.
Slate, pear, apple and mineral - like the restraint here vs the Max's Chardonnay much more. Good acidity and citric kick. Well judged balance. This is good wine.
Lemon, orange, rose and mandarin with some light oak. A decent punchy fruit profile but also has decent structure propping it up. Feels pretty well controlled.
Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Peach, orange, pear, musk - ripe on the nose and palate. Rounded palate, there is some decent texture. I can see some appeal here but it isn't really a style I'm seeking out.
Floral, pencil, crisp green apples. Pure on the palate, very clean and precise. Has spark and plenty of brightness about it. Excellent and should have a long life ahead.
Yeasty and toast, lemon and spice - a decent amount happening on the nose here. Well balanced, with the fruit having a presence but not dominating proceedings. Good stuff.
Spice, musk and oats. Quite rich on the palate, spice throughout, tastes a bit too broad and toasty, I don't know if this needs to settle or be drunk right away?
Straw, pear, mineral and lemon. Palate has good weight, feels well balanced. Good flow and the ripeness is there but is focused well by the acidity. Nice.
Plum, cherry and blackcurrant. Palate is quite sweet upfront, though there is plenty of acidity that counters nicely. Good overall, but just lacking in a bit of depth to be considered better.
Plum, raspberry and cherry. Good tannin structure, with sweet fruit in the background leading towards good balance. Really like the style here, a mix of ripe and cooler climate spicy shiraz.
Floral, spice, iron, redcurrant and plenty of perfume here. Fine acidity with great structure and delicate fruit. Great length. Seriously impressive. Wine of the Tasting for me.
Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Cedar, cherry, redcurrant and peppery spice. Good depth and texture here, with early drinking appeal and plenty of structure to age over the medium to longer term. A little step up on the 2012.
Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Pretty nose of tar, roses and blackberry, with plenty of lift. Palate is pretty open already, there is a good fruit purity and drive. Decent structure, but feels like more of a medium term wine, especially as it is showing well already.
Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Earth and blackcurrant with blackberry as well. Good tannin profile, there is grip but also a bright element from the fruit. Power and flow. Very good, this feels like a wine with a great ageing curve in front of it.
Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Blackberry, smoke, earth, blackcurrant, tobacco and cedar. Straddles the line between power and delicacy, with the fruit retaining its detail very nicely. Plenty of structure behind this to give it the foundations for extended aging. Excellent wine.
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Roses, cherry, plum and earth on the bright nose. Palate is more restrained, with good length and grip. A nice sweet element gives it something to like early, but this should age well also.
Cedar on the nose and palate with some blackcurrant as well. The palate is all structure and the wine as a whole feels quite shut down. I can see some potential, but leave it alone for now.
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Meat, earth, cherry, smoke and raspberry. Nice palate balance, there is a lot of flavour but the structure does well to control and focus it toward a good length finish.
Redcurrant, blackcurrant and cedar notes. Powerful on the palate, spices, driven fruit and good potential to develop. Doesn't do anything groundbreaking but a nice solid wine.
Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Sandalwood, incense, smoke and cherry. Nice red fruits, with good tannins providing the structure. I like the medium bodied profile and this should improve over time.
Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
The weakest of the Trio at this tasting. Some wood, ash and blackcurrant. Palate doesn't really have enough fruit to cover the oak at the moment, this might change with time, but I certainly wasn't feeling the quality that this should have today.
Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Best of the 2013 Trio on the day. Blackberry, cranberry and moderate oak influence. Good brightness on the palate, with a mix of fruit and oak tannins. Good flow and carry, I like the potential for this.
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Fresh nose with strawberry, cherry, lemon and redcurrant. Clean style, there is a touch of sweetness but this is quite refreshing overall. Pretty good first release!
Next to the 2006 this looks a little lacking. There is blackberry, blueberry and cherry. The fruit here is quite a bit sweetness and there isn't the same savoury element to give it extra interest. Still well made.
Mineral, slate and a herbal streak through it. Nice restraint on the palate, the herbs giving it a bit of extra interest. A very different wine to the riper 2013, but both have appeal.
Tasted next to the 2016. Touch of herb, spice, red berries and floral notes. Lighter palate than the riper 2016, has plenty of restraint and good acidity. Not overly deep but does have pretty good style.
The riper 2016 shows quite differently to the 2015. Cherry, redcurrant, blackberry and some raspberry as well. The ripeness shows on the palate as well, with the good acidity lifting it up nicely. Good carry.
Oak, blackberry and mint. Lots of structure from the oak on the palate. Pretty hard to drink this currently, it needs plenty of time and the outcome on the other side isn't exactly clear to me.
2015 Leo Buring Riesling Eden Valley 88 Points
