Nolo's Kitchen, Mpls
Tasted Sunday, February 18, 2018 by rocknroller with 291 views
This was the monthly tasting group event with 10 of us in attendance. The theme was Barolo and Barbaresco. This was a new venue for us. It was bit uneven and probably not the best for our theme.
I didn't write much down about this one. Just noted, fresh and bright, "I like this".

Medium salmon color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Note to self, always get more of these. Wonderful across the board, a beautiful nose, bright with floral notes of roses and and strawberry, chiffon, cherry cream, delicate, fine mousse. The palate has a wonderful creamy texture, strawberry, strawberry chiffon, very elegant and lifted, balanced, fresh and lively. Delightfully dreamy. 93+pts.

Medium red color. Decanted for 2 hours, drank 1 glass over 90 minutes plus. The nose is pretty light, there is some leather, subtle earth and that builds a bit, wood spice, red fruit. The palate has a lot of acid, soil, tangy cherry, mineral, the tannins pick up grip as this sits, some sharpness to the back end that seems woody.

Medium red color. Decanted for 1 hour; drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. This was getting better through the course of the evening. The nose shows dried spice, cedar, dried red fruits, damp earth, olive tapenade. The palate has cherry, sour cherry, licorice, choke cherry, spice, mineral, and round moderate tannins. The nose stars here. 91+pts.

Dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 2 hours plus. This had a great nose. Wonderful perfume, aromatic, floral, leather, earth, kirsch, lifted, dried spices, very complex. The palate kind of comes in and out and when in shows bright red fruits, very pretty, tart red berries, very earthy with a lot minerality and still firm tannins. Lovely again. 93+pts.

Medium red plus color. Drank 1 glass over 2 hours. Same bottle as Chablis28, see his notes for decant times - 3 hours plus some additional air. Another very nice nose here; very damp and earthy forest floor, dried rose petals, red fruit. The palate delivers on the nose with excellent purity, red fruits, raspberry, spices and fine grained tannins. Very refined already and quite complex, but this is working towards an even better place in time. Read Craig's note for more details. Thanks for sharing this one!

Medium red color. Decanted for 2.5hrs. Drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. This was quite vegetal on the nose, earth, pencil, maple. The palate has baked red fruit, very firm, heat, spiced and wood notes. This did appear to develop a better nose about 2+ hours in.

Medium dark red color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. Ooh, lots of damp earth up front on the nose, mineral, leather, red fruits, licorice, good spice profile. The palate has more fruit - in a good way, red cherry, tannins are there but very round, balanced, spices, white pepper, medium finish. 91+ to 92pts.

Medium dark red color. Decanted for 90 minutes; drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. My last bottle and going out on a nice note. I've thoroughly enjoyed these over the years. The nose is pretty with a perfume of dried earth, great fruit - a mix of red and dark red berries, anise, slight savory notes, dried violets, cedar and pencil. The palate is medium bodied, there's still some firmness to the tannins, though they seem relatively ready to play, red fruits, dark berries, ripe raspberry, earthy, dried spices, pencil, and good length. A bit left the next day was still excellent.

Dark red color. Followed one glass over 45 minutes. Tight nose, fuzzy cedar box, vegetal, green pepper, choke cherry, quite a bit of heat. On the palate, choke cherry, earthy, grippy, baked sour cherry, heat. Not crazy about this. Maybe time will improve.

Dark red color. Decanted for 4 hours; followed one glass over 45 minutes. Dark cherry, gravel, pepper and spice, dark fruit, full bodied, with something wonky that I never could put my finger on. 90+ to 91pts.

Deep amber color - deeper than expected actually. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. We drank this next to the '10 "Declassified d'Yquem" and it was a study in contrast. Both of these wine were very good, but at extremes of the spectrum in terms of texture and weight. The '03 is unctuous, honeyed, orange, deep and layered, orange marmalade, botrytis, baked apple, marzipan, orange spice cake. While the '10 was this little sports car racing about in circles with its dazzlingly bright acid and bright citrus and tropical palate; grass, lean, fresh, and balanced. I'll may prefer the luxury car for the long haul, but I'm happy to take the sports car for a spin too.

Pale gold color. Drank 1 glass over 20 minutes, I like this better initially. Pear, fairly light, white fruits and a fairly chalky palate. Seemed to become a little more chalky and one dimensional. 89pts.

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. I'm still liking this, maybe not as much as some previous bottles. This one had more toast, citrus, spice, more structure, some volume on the palate, lime, plenty of acid for this to age further.
