Introduction

It is always a great night when we get to be out on Tracy and Jeff's patio surrounded by Tracy's impeccable perennial gardens. What a great evening with some fantastic wines.

Flight 1 (16 Notes)

  • 2016 Tablas Creek Côtes de Tablas Blanc 90 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles Adelaida District

Light gold color. Drank a 2oz pour over 20 minutes. Light body and refreshing, green fruits, a little floral, very solid and a dandy summer wine.

  • NV Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Boy, rock solid, straight down the road with classic lines. Toasty, apple, crisp, melon, mineral, nice energy. Really enjoyed it, 91+pts.

  • 2006 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 95 Points

    France, Champagne

Light medium shimmering gold color. Drank one glass over 30 minutes. My only complaint about this is there's never enough in the bottle :). This is just so refined and elegant, carrying forth a splendidly lacy mix of brioche, pear, apple, white flowers, and limestone that dances across the senses. Love it. My WOTN.

  • 2012 La Chablisienne Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Light straw color. Drank a 2oz pour over 30 minutes. This was a little rounder style with some oak showing, flinty minerality, vanilla, expands a bit over time and shows apple and citrus fruits. I like this, not classic Chablis, but very good, and I suspect some aging will resolve some of the oak. 91(+)pts.

  • 2012 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. This is so tangy and bright, effusive nose with lmon Meyer lemon, tangerine, saline, oyster shells. The palate is focused and has a grand cru weight and depth, seashore minerals, tons of glorious dry extract on a very long finish. Wow, this kills, and I'm loving how some of these 12's are drinking currently. My #2 WOTN.

  • 2015 Rivers-Marie Chardonnay B. Thieriot Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Pretty big and oak laden up front, tropical fruits, lush and ripe, but there's great acid backing this up and some age should make a big difference here; lemon and tropical fruit palate, creamy, with oak. 91 to 93 potential.

  • 2014 Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch 92 Points

USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

These continue to show a more dialed back style; pear, spiced pear, and mineral nose. The palate is medium bodied with just a hint of lemon butter, apple, spiced, creme brulee, lychee, and chalky minerality.

  • 2012 Brick House Pinot Noir Evelyn's 91 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge

Slow-O 1 hour. Nicely earthy, dark cherry, dark fruits, medium body, wood, wood spice, anise and hints of fine tobacco. This was youthful, tasty and will be better yet. Drink with a decant or hold. 91+(+)pts.

  • 2002 Matrot-Wittersheim Volnay 1er Cru Santenots

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

There was some serious question about this wine from the start. Seemed corky and very weird on the nose and palate,. Kept checking on it over an hour, and it didn't seem much better - there was no interest in drinking it. Long after that, one of us still had some and it seemed to be ok at that point. I also recall the first bottle took a bit to open up, but I don't recall thinking it was off. It you happen across one if these, it might be worthwhile to decant if there is any indication that the wine is not correct - maybe it will work itself out.

  • 2005 Jean-Pierre Guyon Nuits St. Georges Les Herbues 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges

This was a nice surprise. I'd never had this lieu dit before, and it came off as classic aged burgundy. There's some funk and earthy mushroom, red fruits, roses, nicely integrated and balanced. 91+pts.

  • 1995 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva 90 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

Not everyone was appreciating this wine tonight, but I found it a lovely and aged beauty. This was nicely resolved with pretty tart red cherries, rose hips and adding red licorice on the palate, with very fine grained tannins. I think this would have been even more intriguing with a longer review.

  • 1992 Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District 88 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

Very dark red color. Drank a 2 oz pour over an hour. This was nicer on the nose than the palate. The nose has int, subtle cherry, slightly perfumed and bit smokey. The palate on the other hand was harsher, lots of alcohol if the wine aerosolizes at all in the mouth, wood, dried wood. If you're rather cautious in how you drink it, it holds together better. Fun to try this, but just too far down the hill. 87-88ish,

  • 2009 Domaine de la Mordorée Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de la Reine des Bois

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

It's been almost exactly 3 years since having the first time. At that point, the wine was not something I would want to drink, and now 3 years later, it isn't really any better. It is unfortunately, representative of where CdP has largely gone. This is very big, hot, monolithic, lots of black licorice, garrigue, oak and a touch of cilantro. I just don't know that this can ever be a balanced enjoyable wine for me. Not Rated.

  • 2012 Turley Zinfandel Cedarman 88 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

Dark red color, bricked. Blackberry, black raspberry, pepper, anise, some heat. Not as big as one would expect for a Turley. Probably was better a couple years ago too. 87+ to 88pts.

  • 2007 Alexander Valley Vineyards Cyrus 89 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley

More of a straightforward Alexander Valley cab than this typically is. This usually strikes me as a good domestic Bordeaux blend, and kind of a ringer at that. This was more typical cab with dark fruits, cassis, black plum, green pepper and some gravel. Good, but not as expected.

  • 2001 Château Suduiraut 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Deep golden color. This is so good; orange, burnt caramelized sugar, candied pineapple, honey, apricot preserves, orange blossoms, tangerine, spice, unctuous texture, toffee. Simply ethereal.
