Introduction

Bryan generous contributed the 01 and 02 DRCs for a cost share dinner. We decided to have two day events. The dinner was held at Marcel's where we drank the Echezeauxs, GEs and RSVs. Bryan kindly offered to host a lunch and we drank the Montrachet, Richebourgs and La Taches.

Flight 1 - Echezeaux (6 Notes)

  • 2001 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

    (10/20/2018)

Beautifully perfumed nose displaying sweet black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, candied raspberry, a hint of mint/stem and sous bois, rose, truffle, caramel, sweet spices and earth. Beautifully integrated youthful palate, rich and dense especially compare to the GEs and the RSVs, medium acidity, good earthy mineral, a hint of very fine tannins and a long sweet blackberry and raspberry driven finish with stem and earthy mineral at the end. It is drinking beautifully but can improve for another decade as sous bois and tertiary notes have not fully developed.

  • 2002 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

    (10/20/2018)

Expressive nose displaying youthful dense sweet red fruit, strawberry and rhubarb tart, more pronounced stem compare to the 01, rose, cinnamon, tree bark and earth. Excellent concentration, generous red fruit, quite rich and sweet yet showing excellent overall balance, good acidity, a hint of very fine tannins and a long rich red fruit driven finish. This bottle is more youthful and slightly bigger than the 01 but not as well integrated and harmonious. Although it is showing beautifully, it also lacks the finesse of the DRC GEs and RSVs. This can improve for another decade or two.

  • 2001 Domaine Jean Grivot Echezeaux 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

    (10/20/2018)

Very youthful nose displaying deeply toned concentrated black fruit, dark caramel, espresso bean and earth. Excellent concentration, packed jammy black fruit, dense, rich and youthful, medium acidity, a hint of tannins and a medium to long dense deeply toned black fruit driven finish. It is a big scale wine that is a bit monolithic. This may need more time than the DRC Echezeauxs, perhaps two more decades?

Excellent concentration, packed youthful black fruit, medium acidity, noticeable but sweet tannins and a medium to long packed black fruit driven finish. Perhaps the most youthful, rich and concentrated wine of the flight. It is not showing much sous bois or tertiary notes. If cellared ideally, this will need two more decades to reach the peak

  • 2001 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Echezeaux 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

    (10/20/2018)

Expressive big scale nose displaying rich red and black fruit, raspberry jelly, blackberry, roasted nuts, Asian spices and mineral. Excellent concentration, big scale youthful riche dense black fruit, medium acidity and mineral, and a long rich blackberry driven finish. This particular bottle is very youthful. I wonder if the producer prefers the Echezeaux to the Vosne Romanee Suchot. Another wine that will benefit by another decade of cellaring.
