Introduction
This was a great opportunity to see what Cornas was all about.

The 2005 wines were a great start, showing me what to expect from Cornas... but, the later vintages provided good examples of how there is an apparent shift in winemaking in this region, leading to two camps: a more fruit-forward style, and a more traditional savoury- mineral- pungent spice-driven style.
2005 Tardieu-Laurent Cornas Vieilles Vignes

The appearance is clear and deep ruby in colour. Tears and sediment are visible.
The nose is clean. The aromas have a medium intensity and show notes of bottle-age (meaty character, leather) and black fruit (blackberry, black plum). The wine is developing.
On the palate, the wine is dry with medium acidity, medium alcohol, and medium body. The medium level tannins are ripe and silky in nature. The flavours have a medium intensity and show notes of mineral (earthy character, soil, iodine), black fruit (black plum, blackcurrant), and bottle-age (leather, meaty character). The finish has a medium(+) length with an additional note of oak (subtle vanilla) lingering on the palate.
This wine is of an outstanding quality. The flavours are concentrated and have a great balance with the acidity and the alcohol. The tannins have a great balance with the acidity. The oak treatment is relatively neutral; it did not overtly detract from the fruit expression. In its current state, the wine shows complexity with primary, secondary, and tertiary characters. This wine displays a good expression of Cornas, with black fruit, and savoury mineral and animal notes. The finish has a great length.
The wine drinks well now, but has potential for further ageing. The fruit intensity is great, and the tannin and acid structure should support the wine as tertiary notes continue to develop.
