Introduction

The second time I am attending Hong Kong based wine merchant Pearl of Burgundy, PoB's en Primeur tasting. A very well organized walk about event with lots of famous and up and up-coming producers (many of them present themselves). 2017 showed well indeed, above my expectations. Not the density of 2015 and 2016, but also no signs of diluted wines. There was enough body in the wines on show and they have a succulence and softness that it makes them easy to like. If your building up your cellar, buy them, as they will be earlier drinking than 15/16 for example.
I feel that Burgundy in 2010-2020 sees the same progress in quality in wine making that we have witnessed in Bordeaux between 2000-2010. We can lament about high prices and globalization but should also recognize that exactly these high prices have woken up many vignerons (or brought in new ones) to make better wines because they now see that the market rewards it with a higher prices in due course and with the money made, new equipment can be bought and more staff for the vineyard. This is especially true in the mid-priced segment. I would want to particularly point out the Pommard and Volnay appellations with producers like Clerget, Heitz-Lochardet, Launay-Horiot leading the change. They make polished, fragrant wines, far away from the rusticity of the past - and prices of these gems have not yet moved.
