Tangley Oaks - Lake Bluff IL
Tasted Tuesday, February 26, 2019 by Burgundy Al with 369 views
Dinner hosted by John Terlato and Christophe Grenaille. Special guests included Jean-Claude Ramonet, Christophe Roumier, Michel Coutoux (Niellon) and Edouard Labet (Château de La Tour). There is not much more to say, other than list the wines I remembered to write down with brief notes.
Apple with lemon peel on nose and palate. Good weight, better length with an elegant and energetic finish. Good now.

Nicely floral with ripe apple, toasted walnut hints and good weight with a bright finish. Good to enjoy now.

Spring flowers with both apple and lemon and faint savory spice. Very good density and even better length, finishing with intense minerality. The style of white Burgundy that thrills me.

Rich, ripe and dense with mostly stone fruit and some apple. On the opulent side to start, but clearly bright and well structured through good finish.

Surprisingly floral with savory spice and a complex combination of red and black berries. Also surprisingly accessible this young with very bright and elegant textures. Close to its peak drinking window already.

A fascinating contrast to the Chambolle Cras in the next glass. I typically think Clos de La Bussière needs 15+ years in the cellar to show its full potential (just teasing us until that point), and this 2014 validates that thinking. Lots of red fruit and background spice with very good weight and length, plus an intense ferrous minerality that makes this seem more Chambolle-like than most Chambolle. Firm tannins add a crunch to this wine right now, and will add additional layers of complexity as they soften. Hold until at least 2025, but probably even better 2030-.

Ripe red cherry with sweet spice. Everything in harmony with faint earth notes on finish. Good weight and length. very charming right now.

More black cherry and berry aromas and flavors, but some red berry notes add further charm. There is so much going on here, and so much concentration and length. And this is nowhere close to the level of complexity that will emerge in another decade or two. Sensational wine.

Lots of apple, a little bit of lemon curd with a complex array of mint and fresh herbs. Great concentration and great balance already, but this will put on even more weight, so probably better to cellar longer, best 2022-2034.

Ripe orchard fruit with very good balance and a long, bright, energetic finish, especially for the vintage. Will drink well young.

I've had this wine at least a half dozen times before, but never before from 9L directly from the domaine. This was as rich and unctuous as white Burgundy could be, while simultaneously elegant and texturally dancing with brightness. Rich, complex and unfolding.

Great color, great fill, but very corked. And I was sitting between Michel Niellon's daughter and her husband. Michel Coutoux, who made the wine with his father-in-law.

From magnum, and everything is better in magnum. Impressively concentrated (Grand Cru density to me) and much fresher vs 750s over the past few years. Ripe throughout with earth and unfolding complexity as it improved further in glass.

Corked

Small glass, brief note. So much great stuff, but oddly not completely harmonious. Big fruit and earth to start, more firm middle, then powerful finish also firm. Certainly enjoyable, but not consistent with last time tasted.

Black and red berry aromas and flavors with savory, woodsy spice. Good weight, perhaps just barely coming through with Grand Cru density, but exceptional balance and elegantly weightless textures. Great right now.

Small glass, brief note. A massive powerhouse with excellent density and length, clearly begging for more time to soften. Probably 92 points tonight, 95+ point potential. My first time tasting this since barrel tasting in the Roumier cellar in 2010

Small taste, brief note. So much magic going on here, still a little backward. Teasing us with its potential. Certainly 95-96+ point potential (or with more air).

Small glass, brief note. Fully mature orchard fruit aromas with butterscotch notes. Similar flavors with good density that keeps it upright and attractive. Time to drink up.

Decanted an hour+, which helped (I tasted before decanted) but was not enough. The nose was slightly backward when popped, then nearly glorious after an hour in the decanter. The palate was not as forthcoming, while showing so much density and coiled energy. Long, long, long finish. This will be a masterpiece, but patience still required.

2016 Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet
Tasting, brief note. Engaging floral start with equally impressive density for its level. Ripe apple and pear throughout with volume I would easily have thought good 1er Cru.

2015 Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Ripe apple and pear throughout coming across as big and rich to start, then minerally from the middle forward. Very good 89-0 point potential, better to cellar another year or three+.

2014 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos du Cailleret
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Subtle floral start, slightly blocked by the wine being served too cold. Lots of lemon peel and both ripe and tart apple with bright acidity leading to mineral textures on its very long finish. Good already with 92+ point upside.

2015 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 89 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
Tasting, brief note. Ripe red and black berries throughout with allspice and fresh thyme. starts out elegant and slightly light, picks up weight towards finish. Perhaps a little backward today, yet clearly well balanced. 89-90 point potential
