Introduction

This was a great little event with seven of us attending. My first time with most of the group too. Brandon and Kendall did a wonderful job hosting, and Brandon just nailed the long bone ribs. These were right out of the Flintstones they were so big - and perfectly smoked too. The group provided some splendid wines with a number of bonus bottles from the group. It was a great time and I appreciate being included as well as everyone's generosity. Great night!

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • NV Vazart-Coquart Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut 93 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. By far the best bottle of this I've had. Bold aggressive bead, brilliant burst of Ocean sea air on the nose with pear, sour dough, and lemon. The palate is medium full bodied and very tangy with dry stones, pear, Meyer lemon, melon, and sour dough. Loved the energy and brightness tonight.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 1981 Château Laville Haut-Brion Blanc 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Medium dark gold color; fully saturated cork. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. This was a very pretty bottle, mature and complicated nose of toffee, beeswax, lacquer, lemon, lemon peel, earth, and more subtle white flowers. The palate offers a melange of lemon confit, beeswax, lanolin, lacquer, minerals, golden fruits, and toffee. This is mature yet it maintains freshness and vibrancy. Very much a treat to drink.

  • 2014 Château Carbonnieux Blanc 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Pale gold color. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. Youthful, citrus, crisp, mineral, grapefruit, saline, well balanced. Still has upside, gotta be patient though. 91+pts.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1985 Château Rausan-Ségla 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Dark red color, very fine sediment, with a 3mm tranisitional margin. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 3 hours. The nose is striking with it's intense mix of tobacco, fine cigar, and pencil shavings, along with funky damp leaves, red fruit, leather and an infused violet nose. The palate is more feminine, medium full bodied, bold cigar and pencil, dusty fine tannins, cherry, dark red berries, dried wood and nice acidity. Outstanding nose and very nice integrated palate. The cigar and pencil really tend to dominate. No rush. 93+ to 94pts.

  • 2000 Château Kirwan 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Very dark red/purple color. PNP, followed a glass over 90 minutes. Dried wood, dark fruit, but not well delineated; full bodied, cassis, woodsy, firm tannins, austere and firm. This still drinks like it needs another 5 years. I am worried that the wood and tannins may long out live the fruit now though. 89 to Borderline 90pts if you like a firm, sturdy claret.

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

  • 2000 Clos du Marquis Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Lightly corked. Much like the '00 Kirwan served beside it, this drinks rather austere and firmly. I'm not sure the it would have been much better even if not corked.

  • 1970 Château Lynch-Bages 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Medium murky dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Very musty on opening; takes a good fifiteen minutes to start to blow off and open, funk and wet earth, brow sugar, lots of leather, vegetal, dried spice, little sour, dried red fruits, graphite, slightly metallic, still has some grip to the tannins. Still good, but I'm guessing this bottle wasn't a primo example of this either.

Flight 5 (2 Notes)

  • 1996 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very dark purple/red color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Fine pencil shavings, earthy, cassis, plum and blackberries on the nose, a lot of leather, dried dillweed and dried herbs. The palate is full bodied, powerful and dense, black fruits of cassis, plum and blackberry, pencil, leather, herbs, dried earth, and fine grained tannins with some firmness. This is very nice; it needs some air or more time to be at peak. Long life ahead. 93+ to 94pts.

  • 2012 Château La Mission Haut-Brion

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Very dark purple/red color. Unknown treatment if any; drank a glass over an hour. Dark berries, scorched earth, lots of wood and a wall of tannins. Very promising, just needs time. I'm not ready to attach a score at this point, but I'm excited about it down the road.

  • 2007 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles-St.-Jacques 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Medium dark red color. PNP, small glass; this was another generously supplied late entry bonus bottle. Earth, red fruits, cherry and red currants, a bit of sauvage, tart with nice spice character, just a little wood and on a fairly elegant framework. Well put together, agree with Paul S on this. 91+ to 92pts.

  • 2009 Château Guiraud 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Light-medium gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. This was delicious and a very easy drinker hitting the first sweet spot at 10 years of age. Lovely, creme brulee, sweet nectarines, tangerine, baked pear, very energetic, excellent texture and the acidity is quite racy so even though this is creamy, honeyed, and full bodied it is not the least bit cloying. In fact this really glides across the palate very gracefully and ends with beautiful savory spice notes. This is very poised. Highly recommended.

  • 2013 Bott Pince Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos 93 Points

    Hungary, Tokaji

Medium dark gold color. Small glass from 500ml. Yet another bonus bottle. Rather stunning intensity, a melange of tropical and orchard fruits, apricot sweet tarts is out front, apple, peach, tangerine and pineapple, really taut acidity, very bright. Just spot on. 93+ to 94pts.
