France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Bottled in November 2019. Beautiful spice-filled nose that evokes Vosne. Loads of bright, spice-filled black cherry fruit. The ripe fruit is delicious and round but not overdone with good balancing brightness. Suave like a Vosne. 92-94
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Charming red fruits that have more earthen, rustic flavors. Nice concentration and richness of red fruits. The styling here feels more classically NSG, though its not hard by any means. 90-92
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
Interesting comparison to the 2018 village NSG. The wines show what you'd expect with this 2017 more crisp and pure red fruited. The body is also more restrained and less ripe. This is a better food wine, the 2018 a sipper on its own. 88-90
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Again interesting and confirming to taste the 2017 and 2018 side by side. More red fruited here with more distinct earth subtlety coming through. The acidity and tannin is more prominent and the body is leaner than the 2018, though not a lean wine in its own right. Similar to the NSG Village, the 2018 is more fun and easy to enjoy while the 2017 would work better at the dinner table.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Pop n pour in the cellar. This has some serious concentration and powerful mouth coating fruit. Grand Cru stature. For all the fruit richness and power this has excellent balance and approachability. Long, bright, complete finish. 93+
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Third vintage of this wine in the tasting (following 2018 & 2017) which is a cool comparison. More bold fruit profile (and even a touch roasted) with more earth and iron showing as well. I found this vintage to have the most fruit and the most structure of three, and also it would seem to require the most time to achieve harmony. 91-92+ potential.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Good earth and black cherry nose. The palate starts with forward, sweet black cherry and spice that builds momentum on the mid-palate though the finish becomes firm with some dry tannin that needs time. 92+ potential.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Blind cellar treat. Attractive and complex nose of dried cherry, smoke and earth tones. Juicy red cherry on the palate with medium concentration. Still has plenty of grip and life to go. Flavorful, long finish. Shocked to see it as 94. Something to be said for wines not having to travel! Impressive.
2018 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
Pretty red cherry aromas. Round and fresh on the palate with a gentle structural stature. Generous vs. imposing. Some nice savory earth tones. 89-90
