Tasting at Domaine Henri Gouges (Nuits Saint George): Blind cellar treat. Attractive and complex nose of dried cherry, smoke and earth tones. Juicy red cherry on the palate with medium concentration. Still has plenty of grip and life to go. Flavorful, long finish. Shocked to see it as 94. Something to be said for wines not having to travel! Impressive.

Burgundy, Day 2 (Beaune, France): A very generous cellar pull from Grégory. The vintage was served blind to us, but it was clear this was something from the 1990s based on the earthy secondary characteristics. The vast amount of (rustic) tannins here had me thinking 1995, as the fruit didn't feel quite as expressive either. We were shocked at how well this was showing; Grégory wanted to use this to exemplify the older house style and contrast it with the current style.

A nice surprise given the vintage. Past its best but still in one piece, earthy, high-toned, food-friendly.
