Flight 1 (13 Notes)

  • 2013 Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Génération DIX-NEUF

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

    (4/1/2021)

    AGEABLE SAUVIGNON BLANC? LET"S GO....

    A: Deep gold
N: Pronounced nose of yellow oxidised apple, oxidised pear, quince, ripe red grapefruit, ripe lemons, over ripe orange, wet rock, yeast, dried figs, hay, chamomile. Very tertiary. Its fully developed
P: Dry, high acidity (feeling a lot of prickly sensation in the cheeks and the skin in front of the top front teeth so Type: Zesty and Shape...should be spherical, I am just not certain that I get that. Acidity much better integrated with the fruit here), medium alcohol, medium (+) body, pronounced intensity and long finish This has a creamy texture. Likely the influence of extended lees ageing.
C: I think this is a bit past peak. There is some fresh fruit but a little more would help the balance of fruit to acidity. A lot of oxidative notes here. Excellent intensity and length and certainly displaying better complexity than many Sancerres.
    Very Good Quality wine.
I don't see this improving with ageing but the acidity will keep it fresh for years to come.

i'd have thought that this was Chenin Blanc though I feel the difference in their acid shapes.
Could I tell this was a Sancerre over a Pouilly Fume? The perfume from the chamomile is impressive and according to NJ, Sancerre has high toned perfumed SB while Pouilly Fume has more fruit rather than florals. PF also tastes slatey/flinty rather than smoky (many textbooks mark PF as smoky)
made from 80+ year old vines and over 12 months on the lees. This wine is concentrated but refreshing. Not typical of the varietal, however. Not likely to see this in an exam.

    $49/bottle

  • 2018 Berry Bros. & Rudd Extra Ordinary White 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves

    (4/1/2021)

    A: Pale gold
N: Pronounced nose of ripe yellow apple, green apple, ripe lemon, peach skin, white blossom, honeysuckle, slight whiff of nettles, SMOKE, VANILLA, BAKING SPICE, hazelnut.
P: Dry, high acidity (shape seems spherical so I think there is a high proportion of SB in this one), a touch of wax, medium alcohol, medium (+) body, medium (+) intensity and medium (+) finish
C: Lovely balance of ripe fruit and acidity here. Good length and intensity and complexity. Very good quality wine. However, more pronounced intensity on the palate and a longer finish would push the quality into a higher category.
Personally, I find this lovely and would drink a great deal of this with or without food. Lovely wine making at a reasonable price. I wish I could buy these wines in the USA.

Semillion gives you extra weight. Semillon acid structure is more linear so can alter acid shape overall.
Bordeaux blanc has oak notes, has medium to medium (+) in body, has more of an oily texture and greater complexity than SBs from the Loire

  • NV Hattingley Valley Classic Reserve

    United Kingdom, England, Hampshire

    (4/3/2021)

    A: Pale lemon
N: Medium (+) nose of ripe Myer lemon, redskin apple, brioche, yeast, almond
P: Dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, medium (-) body, medium (+) intensity and long finish
C: Balance of fruit and acid. There is even a good spread of primary, secondary and tertiary aromas here. Its a very good quality wine lacking only in complexity.
I think that this is suitable for ageing. The acidity will keep it fresh and there is enough fruit concentration to develop into something more complex down the line. Though , it is typically consumed young.

  • 2015 Villa Cerrina Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

    Italy, Abruzzi, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

    (4/7/2021)

    A: Medium ruby
N: medium (-) nose of cherry, tomatoes, tomato leaf,Leather
P: Dry, medium acidity, medium chalky tannin, medium alcohol, medium (-) intensity and medium short finish.
Acceptable quality with decent balance of fruit and acid. It is quite tomatoey. Not suitable for ageing as there is no complexity or intensity for that.
Good pizza wine but 4 day’s later, intensity was in the toilet. $5

  • 2018 Renato Ratti Barbera d'Asti

    Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Barbera d'Asti

    (4/14/2021)

    A: Medium ruby
N: medium (+) nose of plum skin, cherry, bramble, liquorice, dried thyme
P: Dry, medium (+) acidity, medium alcohol, medium (+) body , medium (+) intensity and finish.
C: the ripe and tart fruit is well balanced by the acid. Good intensity and length but not complex.
    TOP TIP:
Leave to BREATHE! Put the cork back in the bottle after a first taste as it was tight. After that a week, I came back and this was FAR better.

  • 2018 Illahe Pinot Noir Bon Sauvage 89 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    (4/17/2021)

    A: Pale ruby
N: Pronounced nose of raspberry, strawberry, redcurrant, kola nut, liquorice, black tea, bay leaf, violet, cloves
P: Dry, high acidity, medium (-) chalky tannin, high alcohol, full body, medium (+) intensity and finish.
C: Superb balance of acid and fruit intensity. Length and intensity are assets in the quality of this wine. It lacks complexity but is suitable for ageing. The complexity will come.
    Very good quality wine.

This wine is basket pressed so winemakers report a softer pressing leading to less damage of seeds and thus less extraction of bitter phenolics from them. Also, if u get less tannin from the seeds and more from the skin, the skin tannin gives a softer mouthfeel and is less astringent. One gets a less rustic wine

  • 2019 McBride Sisters Sauvignon Blanc

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

    (4/17/2021)

    A: Pale gold
N: Pronounced nose of JOLLY RANCHER lime candy, GUAVA, PASSION FRUIT, ELDERFLOWER Some reduction (flinty, struck match) notes found here....thanks to stainless steel, SO2 and screw cap
P: Dry, high acidity (zesty - inside of mouth opposite gums at the top is tingling a LOT 1 minute after spitting out. SPHERICAL shaped acidity), medium alcohol, pronounced intensity , medium (-) body and just a medium finish
C: Wow! Got that lovely acid and fruit balance. Length leads a lot to be desired but intensity is ideal. It is a simple wine. Good quality wine and very typical.
< $10 a bottle from Aldi. Does the job.
Another NW producer of SB, South Africa, is more like a European wine. Australia tries to emulate NZ. Quite candied. The Napa SBs are more oak influenced.

FUN FACT: Marlborough SB is grown on gravelly soil to great effect....just like its descendent grape, Cab Sav. They both seem to benefit from the same soil.

  • 2018 Duckhorn Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    (4/17/2021)

Been open for 2 days and in 375ml (split) bottle:

    A: Pale lemon (water white)
N: Medium (+) nose of cat pee, gooseberry, grass, smokey, sourdough bread, nutmeg
P: Dry, high acidity but not as high as the Silex from the Loire or the McBride from NZ (type is zesty again in interior of mouth directly in front of upper front dentition. Shape is spherical again...NJ might have something), medium alcohol, medium (+) intensity, medium (+) finish
C: Balance of fruit and acid, love the intensity and finish. Not complex. Its primary and secondary. I think this is made for early drinking. Not suitable for ageing. No sign of tertiary ageing and its 3 years old.

Bordeaux. More body and more texture so fruit reaches all over mouth. In Napa, the fruit is felt on tongue and the acidity is softer. The fruit and acidity is more integrated in US yes U.S. Sauvignon Blanc.

  • 2015 Royal Tokaji Wine Co. Furmint Tokaji The Oddity 89 Points

    Hungary, Tokaji

    (4/19/2021)

    A: Medium lemon
N: Medium (+) nose of orange, peach, honeysuckle, ginger, GUNSMOKE/FLINT dominant, rye, yeast, cream, green pepper
P: Dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (12%), medium body, medium (+) intensity, medium (+) finish
C: Very good quality wine here. it is quite savoury but great balance of fruit and intensity and earth to acidity. Good length and intensity and some complexity here.
Best furmint that I have ever had and at under $20/bottle, it has wonderful QPR.Great with food given that acidity and intensity or drink on its own. I think this is certainly suitable for ageing. I would love to revisit in 5 years but sadly, Im going to drink the bejesus out of my last bottle long before that.

  • 2018 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Condrieu La Petite Cote

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

    (4/21/2021)

    Tasted Blind
    A: Medium lemon
N: Pronounced nose of fresh peaches, dried orange rind, jasmine, lilies, ginger, yeast and a lot of FENNEL
P: Off dry (others say DRY), medium (+) acidity medium alcohol, medium (+) body, pronounced intensity, and long finish
C: Beautiful ripeness. Very generous but there is that acidity ensuring that it isn't cloying. Its complex, its got ideal length and intensity. Outstanding quality here. My second favourite Condrieu to date

    Guesses:
I thought that this was old world as it is certainly stoney. The acidity indicated a cool/moderate climate and the insane peaches and florality SHOULD have given me the answer but I though it was a lot like Alsace Muscat.

    Mistakes:
Alsace Muscat would have more grape and more rosewater. I have had Muscat with a little of that green fennel too so all a bit confusing. The peach was the first thing we smelled so that is another tell.

  • 2010 Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Moelleux

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

    (4/21/2021)

    Tasted Blind

    A: Medium Amber
N: Medium nose of oxidised apple, apricot, peach, ginger, honey marmalade, ripe lemon, candied pineapple
P: Medium sweet, high acidity (crescendo shape), medium alcohol, pronounced intensity, full body, long finish
C: Great acidity flushes out that sweetness, I adore the intensity on the palate though I feel its not carried through on the nose. Length is achingly good. It still tastes like its developing and needs more time to reach complexity but what a beauty! Its a very good quality wine which is likely to become outstanding given more time.
Rich and acid. This is very suitable for ageing and I would love to see the improvements in 5 years time.

    Guesses:
The wet rock said old world and he high acidity with crescendo shape gave me Chenin Blanc. Thought it might be a Quart de Chaume

    Mistakes:
    QdC would have been sweeter.

  • 2018 Bedrock Wine Co. Zinfandel Esola Vineyard

USA, California, Sierra Foothills, Amador County

    (4/21/2021)

    Tasted Blind

    A: Medium ruby
N: Medium (+) nose of blackberries, red plum, black plum, violet and someone noted dill
P: Dry, medium (+) acid, medium alcohol, high grippy tannins , medium (+) intensity, medium (+) body and finish
C: Its a grown up zinfandel. The alcohol was likely high but well integrated and the fruit was ripe but not jammy. I didn't guess that this was even New World to be honest. I expected silkier tannins in a zin but after the reveal, I checked for Peach Preserve and there it was!

  • 2009 Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico Riserva

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    (4/21/2021)

    A: Medium garnet
N: Medium (+) nose cherry, cranberry, balsamic, tomato leaf, tobacco leaf, leather, wet rock
P: Dry, medium (+) acidity, medium (+) grippy tannins, high alcohol, full body and medium (+) intensity .....finsih seemed clipped at medium
    Good Quality wine here.

    Guesses:
Wet rock and tomato leaf so Sangiovese. I didn't think it was as concentrated or mushroomy as Brunello and so jumped on Chianti Classico.
