Tasted Sunday, October 17, 2021 by AllRed with 91 views
The 2nd Sunday group gathered for our regular double blind tasting. For this group, we are presented a couple of double blind warm ups before the main flight. The warm ups are discussed & unveiled before moving on to the themed main flight. We spent forty five minutes or so tasting and evaluation the eight wines for the main flight before ranking the wines and then making guesses as to what we were tasting. Wines are ranked 1-8, one point for each place, and then unveiled from last place to first place. After the tasting, dinner is served with the additional wines brought by the group, nonblind. For this tasting we had ten tasters and the cost was $45, thanks to a nice discount from our hosts.
The first couple of wines had me thinking pinot, and Burgundy in particular. As I progressed through the wines, these seemed less like Burgundy so I thought perhaps Oregon. With air, the tannins really began to show and I got less pinot fruit and character in these. I think only one or two in the group guessed pinot, one of whom correctly identified these as Burgundy.
With a terrific choucroute.

Double blind. Bright and citrusy with a grassy undertone. Flavors of citrus, mineral, lemon and dried honeycomb. Guessed sauv blanc.

2016 Ridge Chardonnay Estate 92 Points
USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
Double blind. Smoky; toasted oak, apple/orchard fruit aromas. The palate follows the bouquet. Right now the wood dominates, but I think there’s enough fruit underneath; just needs time. Guessed young CA chard.
