Introduction

Anything from Tuscany welcome!

Flight 1 - Surprisingly good whites (2 Notes)

  • 2020 Podere Le Ripi Canna Torta Bianco Toscana IGT 91 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Trebbiano & Malvasia macerated and aged in clay amphorae, with no added suplhur. A slightly orange wine - "blush" perhaps? Very raw and slightly earthy on the nose, freshy and a bit cidery, but certainly in a good way. Floral and curry leaf notes as well as all the fresh apple. Extremely thist-quenching, fun and popular with all.

  • 2019 Querceto di Castellina "Livia" Toscana IGT 90 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Viognier & Roussanne blend (unsure of the proportion). Solid straw colour. A nice combination of fatness and steel, with passionfruit, honey and a touch of cream. Intense, focused acidity (not something I associate with these varieties!) and a bit of an acetone note. A superior sipper.

Flight 2 - Younger reds (2 Notes)

  • 2016 Le Ragnaie Rosso di Montalcino 93 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino

Drinking so well tonight - like pure essence of Sangiovese. Bright red fruit seasoned with dusty terracotta, so clean and juicy that it glided down despite some useful tannin and acidity, delightful aromas of black tea and violets. If only all Rosso was like this!

  • 2020 Ficomontanino Bulgarelli Toscana IGT 89 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

100% Sangiovese from the southeast tip of Tuscany, where Umbria and Lazio meet, fermented spontaneously and refined in a combination of cement and steel vats for one year. Tasted young, and there was a touch of spritz. Raw-ish and stemmy, dusky flowers, cola cubes. Not a bad wine, but didn't shine in this company.

Flight 3 - Mature reds (2 Notes)

  • 1983 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino 93 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Very mature, as expected. Deep, soft and leafy, lots of earth and tobacco, and some even more tertiary aromas such as menthol and shoe polish. Silky soft but slightly sharp with that Sangiovese acidity. In good condition and certainly delicious, but definitely got the impression these must on the downslope now.

  • 1997 Tenuta Guado al Tasso (Antinori) Bolgheri Superiore Tenuta Belvedere 94 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore

What a lovely wine! I've been a bit sceptical about Super Tuscans, but this was powerful evidence for the defence. Dark and balsamic, with pine notes that reminded me of the eucalyptusy Penfolds 707. Lots of plummy fruit and a touch of vanilla, and incredibly refined. A superb bottle, that seemed to be consensus WOTN.

Flight 4 - With steak (2 Notes)

  • 2012 Tenuta le Potazzine Brunello di Montalcino 93 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Viola Gorelli told me a couple of weeks ago that she really likes this vintage, and I can see why! She also commented that, due to the estate's altitude, they tend to do well in warmer vintages. The wine was ripe-ish with sufficient acidity, giving and approachable, with the flavour of summer pudding... all in all, wonderfully hedonistic.

  • 2013 Tenuta le Potazzine Brunello di Montalcino 92 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Didn't excite me quite as much as the bottle back in 2020, although not sure why - and it was still very good. Pure and clean, with refreshing, food-friendly acidity, some dark balsamic notes and a feeling of garnet brightness; perhaps on the austere side for Brunello, but so easy to drink.
