Introduction

Anything from Tuscany welcome!

Flight 1 - Surprisingly good whites (2 notes)

White
2020 Podere Le Ripi Canna Torta Bianco Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
91 points
Trebbiano & Malvasia macerated and aged in clay amphorae, with no added suplhur. A slightly orange wine - "blush" perhaps? Very raw and slightly earthy on the nose, freshy and a bit cidery, but certainly in a good way. Floral and curry leaf notes as well as all the fresh apple. Extremely thist-quenching, fun and popular with all.
White
2019 Querceto di Castellina "Livia" Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
90 points
Viognier & Roussanne blend (unsure of the proportion). Solid straw colour. A nice combination of fatness and steel, with passionfruit, honey and a touch of cream. Intense, focused acidity (not something I associate with these varieties!) and a bit of an acetone note. A superior sipper.

Flight 2 - Younger reds (2 notes)

Red
2016 Le Ragnaie Rosso di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino
93 points
Drinking so well tonight - like pure essence of Sangiovese. Bright red fruit seasoned with dusty terracotta, so clean and juicy that it glided down despite some useful tannin and acidity, delightful aromas of black tea and violets. If only all Rosso was like this!
Red
2020 Ficomontanino Bulgarelli Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
89 points
100% Sangiovese from the southeast tip of Tuscany, where Umbria and Lazio meet, fermented spontaneously and refined in a combination of cement and steel vats for one year. Tasted young, and there was a touch of spritz. Raw-ish and stemmy, dusky flowers, cola cubes. Not a bad wine, but didn't shine in this company.

Flight 3 - Mature reds (2 notes)

Red
1983 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
93 points
Very mature, as expected. Deep, soft and leafy, lots of earth and tobacco, and some even more tertiary aromas such as menthol and shoe polish. Silky soft but slightly sharp with that Sangiovese acidity. In good condition and certainly delicious, but definitely got the impression these must on the downslope now.

1997 Tenuta Guado al Tasso (Antinori) Bolgheri Superiore Tenuta Belvedere Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore
94 points
What a lovely wine! I've been a bit sceptical about Super Tuscans, but this was powerful evidence for the defence. Dark and balsamic, with pine notes that reminded me of the eucalyptusy Penfolds 707. Lots of plummy fruit and a touch of vanilla, and incredibly refined. A superb bottle, that seemed to be consensus WOTN.

Flight 4 - With steak (2 notes)

Red
2012 Tenuta le Potazzine Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
93 points
Viola Gorelli told me a couple of weeks ago that she really likes this vintage, and I can see why! She also commented that, due to the estate's altitude, they tend to do well in warmer vintages. The wine was ripe-ish with sufficient acidity, giving and approachable, with the flavour of summer pudding... all in all, wonderfully hedonistic.
Red
2013 Tenuta le Potazzine Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
92 points
Didn't excite me quite as much as the bottle back in 2020, although not sure why - and it was still very good. Pure and clean, with refreshing, food-friendly acidity, some dark balsamic notes and a feeling of garnet brightness; perhaps on the austere side for Brunello, but so easy to drink.

Flight 5 - Even more reds (4 notes)

Red
2005 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
92 points
From magnum, and at an excellent stage of evolution in this large format. Ample, inviting and deep with blackcurrant and a touch of truffle. Loved the long finish.
Red
2009 Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva Coltassala Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
A bit strange - good acidity, but seemed more mature than its age implied, and a little bit clipped and herbal. Not obviously flawed, but perhaps not helped by the run of excellent reds that preceded it. Not rated.
Red
2009 Castello del Terriccio Lupicaia Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
91 points
Pretty young still. Lots of juicy dark fruit, seasoned with menthol and burned meat. Deep and juicy, perhaps a touch of undergrowth coming through towards the finish. Come back in five years?
Red
2015 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
91 points
A friendly wine, and really well-judged in the context of the vintage, though still a bit young. Gamey and grippy, then a slightly short finish.

Flight 6 - With pasticciotto (1 note)

There was also Tignanello grappa

White - Sweet/Dessert
2012 Marchesi de' Frescobaldi Pomino Castello di Pomino Vin Santo Italy, Tuscany, Pomino
90 points
Intense, with plenty of gingery spice as well as all the sweetness you'd expect. Soft and pretty, without the impact of the best vin santos.
