Introduction

This was the monthly iteration of the big group. We had nice group of 17 at two tables for this event (MB, LD, DR/DR, JG/CG, JV/MV, KB, CV, JP, BB, ML, DD, BT, GA, RA. The theme was Rhone wines and there was a good representation of mostly CdP with a smattering of NR. This was held at Noyes and Cutler, a new edition to the St. Paul lowertown dining scene. We had very good service and the food impressed most everyone I think. I will look forward to a return visit for sure.

  • NV Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Réserve

    France, Champagne

Another excellent showing tonight. Very similar to the NV Henriot Souverain we drank side by side. Both were very nicely toasted, excellent weight and concentration, with green apple and orchard fruits. i think the edge goes to the Henriot tonight by a smidge. Both excellent values and consistent performers. 92pts.

  • NV Henriot Champagne Brut Souverain 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Another excellent showing tonight. Very similar to the NV Charles Heidsieck we drank side by side. Both were very nicely toasted, excellent weight and concentration, with green apple and orchard fruits. I think the edge goes to the Henriot tonight by a smidge carried by the sea breeze notes. Both excellent values and consistent performers.

  • 2020 Julien Pilon Condrieu lône 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

Plae gold color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. Unmistakably Condrieu, tropical nose and palate, florals, exotic orange, passion fruit, ripe nectarine, very minerally, maybe a bit rounder and a touch oily. 91+pts.

  • 1994 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Medium dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. Dried leaves with a floral perfume, soy, cherry, iron and Provencal herbs on the nose. The palate is delicate and medium bodied, refined and evolved, cherry, red berries, iron and blood, Dried herbs, with brighting acid and soft tannins. Just lovely and a notch better than the '00 Donjon in a tight heat.

  • 2000 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. Drank this next to an equally beguiling '94 Beaucastel. The camps seemed to be somewhat split in their preferences. It was a tough choice for me, thoroughly enjoying both wines. The Donjon was also quite perfumed and floral, very tangy acidity, juicy cherry fruit, blood and pomegrante, spices and leather stand out. In the end, I was a bit more captivated by the "94's nose and resolve.

  • 2006 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark red color. Drank a small glass over an hour. This followed the gorgeous flight of '94 Beaucastel and '00 Donjon and it was a tough act to follow. I always love Pegau, but in the aftermath this felt quite youthful despite its 16+ years. Rather bold and spicy tonight, but still with all the class of Pegau if not the expected nuance.

  • 2009 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very dark red color. PNP, drank a small glass over an hour. This followed the gorgeous flight of '94 Beaucastel and '00 Donjon and it was a tough act to follow. Youthful with impressive fruit and concentration, great satiny texture, blackberries, blackcherry, boysenberry, spice and firm tannins. I still wanna give this more time and air.

  • 2000 Alain Voge Cornas Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Very dark red plus color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. Nice, came off more full bodied tonight compared to a precious bottle, silky, saddle leather, a touch of funk, cassis, black pepper, black and blue fruits. Still seems youthful, and I keep expecting more. 91+ to 92pts.

  • 2010 Guillaume Gilles Cornas 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Very dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. Leathery, red fruits, cherry, charred, minerals, anise, grippy. This really benefitted from the air, not really coming around until the end for me - then showing an emergence of this core of red and black fruit that really had clarity and definition along with the additon of some appealing spice notes on the nose. 91(+?)pts.

  • 2007 Marc Sorrel Hermitage Le Gréal 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Very dark red/purple color. Drank a small glass at the end of the night. This came at the end of a long line of wines and like the '10 Guigal BeB didn't get the attention they deserved. I thought this had a really great texture to it, big, with dark fruits of blackcherry and boysenberry, good minerality and well spiced. 92-93pts.

  • 2010 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Very dark red color. Drank a small glass at the end of the night. This came at the end of a long line of wines and like the '07 Sorrel Hermitage LG, didn't get the attention they deserved. There's a lot going on here, the nose is complex, nice dried leave and dried mushroom notes, black fruits, fig, scorched earth and mineral density with a little herbaceous edge.

  • 2019 Les Vins de Vienne Condrieu La Chambée 92 Points

Small glass over 30 minutes. Same bottle as Bellissimo. I concur with his spot on note. Very vibrant , gorgeous tropical fruit, classic florals, love the freshness this brings.

  • 2003 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Small glass over 15 mnintes. Oh the violets on the nose here, deeply floral, leather, soil, garrigue, classy, long and minerally dense on a medium frame. Really understated and refined for the vintage, outstanding. 93+pts.

  • 2005 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted. Small Taste of the '05 and '07 at the end of the night. Personally, I really like Charvin, but this was tough sledding after the older CdP's we had earlier. No notes, but probably favored the '07 slightly, both good, but not that different.

  • 2009 Domaine de la Mordorée Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de la Reine des Bois

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Just got a little taste of this at the end of the night. Kind of fun to try after the vertical we did the Monday before. This was better than in the past. Things are still flashy and ripe with blackberry and lots of dark fruits, spicy garrigue and dried herbs, but it has settled down now and is more on track. Impression was 91-92pts.
