Introduction

For the second year, Daniel very, very, very kindly agreed to take me to the En Primeur campaign.

Flight 1 - Right bank wines (14 Notes)

We were again guests of the Negociant Ballande & Meneret.

And it's off to the right bank today…a part of Bordeaux that I am trying to get up to speed on…price point and homogeneity have always been detractors for me historically but some rather splendid experiences with older bottles along with the En Primeur campaign last year has turned me around.

Figeac and Berliquet were good today, Canon barrel samples showed great promise which bodes well.

  • 2022 Pétrus

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

fresh and fleshy plums, backed by sweet spice and a tiny liquorice notes on the nose. Medium plus intensity acidity plums, fully integrated oak, a little saline splash initially, fair lick of alcohol warmth on the finish, quite broad and dense. Powerful without being overblown, all travels long. Over time some blueberry and raspberry notes joins the plums on the nose and palate, tannins are talc textured persistent and encased by the fruit. Pretty good.

Flight 2 - Lunch at Cheval Blanc (4 Notes)

sit down lunch at Cheval Blanc, I had the pleasure of sitting next to the Bordeaux buyer for Zachy's from the States...we had a little nerd-fest about 'lesser' Bordeaux producers...

  • 2018 Château Quinault L'Enclos

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Plummy, ripe, sweet spices, a little jammy, smells quite rich. And so it proves on the palate, dense, black hued fruit, a little red berry and associated freshness, alcohol warmth and talc textured persistent tannins arrive at the same time. With time a touch of jubey fruit and a little iron/blood, slightly dried herbs with time a little bacon fat and red plum. Woof.

  • 2012 Château Cheval Blanc

  • 2009 Château Cheval Blanc

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Less obviously ripe then I thought it would be on the nose; red and black plums and berries, sweet spice. Medium plus intensity acidity, the weight of the vintage is more obvious here; dense, baked black fruits, slightly drying tending to slightly chalky tannins, alcohol warmth on the finish and quite a lot of savouriness, just about avoiding some bitter notes. With time a touch more raisin/prune as well as a leather and alcohol derived peppery spice.

Flight 3 - Supper with Laetitia and James at there beautiful unit in the old cellars (2 Notes)

It was such a treat to catch up with Laetitia and James again and hear all the gossip over a light supper and a couple of lovely wines…at the end of the night they introduced me to some rather frightening white spirits including a Rhum Agricole from Haiti flavoured with ginger and lemongrass...I ran away under the onslaught!

Closing

Lovely day of tasting then equally lovely to catch up with James and Laetitia
