Serious Burgundy night

Introduction

Pleasant surprise that some of my favourite wines turned up. Also thankful that almost all the wines showed superbly and lived up to their billing.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2017 Domaine Sylvain Pataille Bourgogne Blanc Le Chapitre 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

Quite a heady nose, ripe and sweet both on the nose and palate. Some development so I guessed 2012 St Aubin. Haven’t had much experience with Pataille’s whites but this was clean and refreshing.

  • 2016 Domaine Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Clearly a top maker and plot from the first sniff and taste. Serious, reductive nose with gunflint but also with beautiful orchard fruit. Fantastic precision and tension, impressive density of fruit on the palate. The latter characteristic made me think Meursault but after some time in the glass, the Puligny citrus notes began to show. Always one of my favourite wines.

  • 2001 Henri Boillot Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Dark golden in colour. Showed its age with some honey and caramel notes. A stately, weighty wine but I preferred the younger Boillot tonight for its tension.

  • 2017 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Clos Vougeot 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

My contribution. Popped and poured, this was good to go from the outset. Beautiful, intoxicating nose, the palate had the bright, sappy red fruit that I love in Burgundies. Seamless and so elegant - the ethereal, velvety nature of this wine made it stand out from the others tonight. Most voted this for WOTN, including myself.

  • 2002 Hubert Lignier Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

Thought this was very good but the previous taster who brought it said he had better bottles. Made sense since I thought this was similar to the ‘01 he brought previously which was excellent as well, but I expected the fruit in an ‘02 to be more vibrant and sappy. Thought this was from the 90s at the beginning but tightened up with time in the glass as the attractive dark cherry fruit became more evident. Another perennial favourite of mine.

  • 2010 Bouchard Père et Fils Chapelle-Chambertin 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru

Guessed 2011 Gevrey because of the distinct greenness and shrill acidity. Relative to the competition tonight and for a 2010, this was disappointing. Another meh Bouchard red - just saw the price for this wine, insanity.

  • 2016 Olivier Bernstein Charmes-Chambertin 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

My first time trying Bernstein, guessed ‘16 or ‘18 Gevrey. Attractive dark cherry fruit with some cola notes on the nose. Clearly modern but not as overdone and obnoxious as I expected from the producer. Developed more sweet and candied fruit on the palate with time in the glass that reminded me of a new-world Pinot. Was good for me but apparently his villages have more obtrusive oak, guess the GCs can absorb the oak better.

  • 2016 Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Quite similar to the Bernstein with dark cherry and cola notes, so guessed 2016 Gevrey from a modern producer like Duband. Had a little more restraint and finesse than the Bernstein, along with more traditional savoury notes. Had the velvet texture but missed the ethrealness of the H-N. Only showing a glimpse of its potential today but very good already.

  • 2007 Domaine Bruno Clair Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Brought for a friend. Slightly cloudy in colour but showed correctly for its age otherwise. Resolutely old-school Gevrey with savoury iron notes and chewy tannins. Had a hint of delicate red fruit but the newer style is more attractive.
