In memoriam Bordeaux tasting for Piet Kuiper

Introduction

In May I went to his house to select some of his wines for a tasting with our tasting group. The tasting was scheduled for 21 September, but unfortunately Piet died before the tasting took place. His sons donated the bottles to our tasting group, so we could have the tasting after all. Thank you!

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 1999 La Dame de Montrose 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

    Mature bouquet with forest floor, red berries and mushrooms. On the palate still some red berries and good, fresh and juicy acidity. Round tannin with still a pleasant bite. Overall a beautiful, elegant and mature wine.

  • 2007 La Dame de Montrose 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

    Creamy, even a bit lactic bouquet with cherries and tobacco. On the palate some graphite, juicy and friendly, a slight touch of sweetness, good acidity and round tannin.

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Listrac-Médoc

    In the bouquet dark berries, smoke and tobacco. On the palate juicy dark and red berries, some graphite, a slight touch of sweetness, good acidity and round tannin.

    Mature bouquet with autumn forest, tobacco and leather. On the palate juicy red berries, autumn forest, a touch of sweetness, fresh acidity and round, creamy tannin. Elegant wine.

    Beautiful and mature bouquet with autumn impressions and tobacco. On the palate the same impressions, a friendly and juicy wine with round and friendly acidity and soft tannin. Fully mature.

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Beautiful and mature bouquet with oak and autumn impressions. Same on the palate, beautiful red and dark berries, some cigar box and beautiful, juicy acidity. The tannin still has a soft bite.

    Deep bouquet with dark berries, some stable and savory smells and well dosed oak. Same on the palate, a bit rustic, juicy dark berries and good acidity and tannin. Also savory. The wine is in its maturity stage and there is potential for a few more years. Beautiful wine.

    Beautiful and mature bouquet with rose hips and forest floor impressions. On the palate the same impressions, juicy and creamy red berries, good and round acidity and melted tannin. Beautiful old “lady”.

  • 1988 Château Pontet-Canet Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    I know this vintage of this wine from a previous occasion and reading that, I am sure we had an off bottle tonight. Very special bouquet with smoke and tar in an unpleasant way. Same on the palate, mature with ok acidity and slightly drying tannin. No score.

  • 1998 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    In the bouquet chocolate and rose hips as well as forest floor. On the palate juicy dark and red berries, rose hips again, autumn forest and beautiful acidity and tannin. Luxurious wine. For me personally this was the wine of the night.

    In the bouquet beautiful autumn impressions, mint, dark berries and oak. On the palate juicy red berries, beautiful red fruit acidity and mild tannin. The wine is fully mature and a real pleasure to drink.

    In the bouquet coffee, oak, dark berries and smoke. On the palate juicy dark berries, fresh acidity and round tannin. Some bell pepper. Overall a bit disappointing. 88 - 89

    Beautiful bouquet with beautiful oak, menthol and dark berries. On the palate ripe dark berry fruits, chocolate, full bodied and ripe, beautiful acidity and subtle use of oak. Fresh acidity and soft tannin wilt a mild bite. Lush wine.

    Beautiful and rustic bouquet with dark berries, laurel, mint and beautifully dosed oak. On the palate juicy dark berries, rustic flavors, chocolate, herbs, beautiful acidity and oak, Lovely tannin. Beautiful wine which is ready now and also has a future of several years.

Closing

It was a beautiful tasting in a good atmosphere and we will miss Piet and his humor.
