Flight 1 - Warm ups (4 Notes)

Flight 2 - Reds (6 Notes)

  • 2015 Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas Les Hautes Garrigues 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Double blind. Light color. Opens with an earthy overtone with dark fruit and leather underneath. Flavors of ripe dark fruit and spiced plum. Develops a nice herbaceous quality as it sits in the glass. (J&S)

  • 1999 Clos Mogador Priorat 89 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Double blind. Light color with a bit of bricking. The bouquet is a little port-like and a touch maderized as well. The palate starts off a bit tannic and austere with ripe, raisiny fruit underneath but as it opens the ripeness fades and the fruit becomes quite vibrant and enjoyable…less obviously ripe and raisined. To me this drank a bit like a mid-90s cab sauv. (MM)

  • 2019 Boisset Cellars Napa Cut Cabernet Sauvignon

USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

Double blind. Light color. Notes of cherry, red berry fruit, cinnamon and spice. Abundant red berry fruit on the palate takes on a darker profile as it breathes in the glass. Spice elements carry through the finish.

A surprise when unveiled as this definitely doesn’t fit the typical cab sauv profile, lacking the tannin and structure, and without the typical chocolate notes expected from Napa cab. That being said, what is here is very enjoyable due to the bright, nicely ripe fruit and balance. (V&M)

  • 2016 Griffin Creek Grenache 93 Points

USA, Oregon, Southern Oregon, Rogue Valley

Double blind. Light color. Aromas of cherry, candied red fruit and warm spices. Balanced. Abundant bright red fruit on the palate. Picks up a chocolate note as it sits. Medium-bodied, with a lingering finish. 92-93 pts. (J&L)

  • 1990 E. Guigal Hermitage 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Blind. Faded mature color with some bricking- clearly older and easy to pick out as our bottle in this flight. Aromas of red berry fruit, roasted game meats, pine resin and something a bit wild/feral as well. With air a bit of funky earth emerges as well. Flavors of red fruit, white pepper, tar, pine sap and olives. Started to fade by the time we started dinner, but for a good hour and change this was drinking beautifully. This bottle had been double decanted off its sediment 90 minutes before the flight was poured.

  • 2005 Tenuta Sette Ponti Oreno Toscana IGT 93 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Blind. Dusty red color with slight bricking. Aromas of leather, plum, soy and black currants. Plush, with flavors of dark fruit and leather. Balanced, with a long finish. Delightful, and my favorite in the flight. 93+ pts.

Flight 3 - Reds (6 Notes)

  • 2017 Morgante Nero d'Avola Sicilia Don Antonio Riserva

    Italy, Sicily, Sicilia

Double blind. Notes of red fruit and plum follow through on the palate. Subtle leathery undertones. Abundant fruit with slightly drying tannins. Excellent. (R&S)

  • 2010 Château Grand Mayne 88 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Double blind. Notes of ripe plummy dark fruit, leather and underbrush. Full-bodied. The ripe dark fruit carries through on the palate. I guessed zinfandel and I think just about everyone was surprised to see Bordeaux here. This is definitely a forward, “modern” style of Bordeaux. I might hold it another five to ten and hope for some old world character to develop. (J&S)

  • 2018 Boutinot Cairanne La Côte Sauvage

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Cairanne

Double blind. Aromas of red fruit, clay and herbs. It has an appealing candied sweetness to the fruit which works very well here. Medium-bodied. The palate is more dark-fruited than I would have expected, with spice, brown sugar and herb accents. Seamless across the palate. Excellent. (R&S)

  • 2015 AR.PE.PE. Valtellina Superiore - Sassella Stella Retica 88 Points

Italy, Lombardia, Valtellina, Valtellina Superiore - Sassella

Double blind. Light color. Leather and washed out red fruit notes. Soft, with red berry fruit and cherry flavors. Lacking structure and acidity but is pleasant enough. 88+ pts. (J&S)

  • 2017 Chateau Montelena Zinfandel

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Calistoga

Double blind. Dominant sour dark fruit follow through on the palate. Has some length to the finish. This was a complete surprise when unveiled as this is nothing like what I expect from Montelena’s zin. Presumably this was an off bottle. (J&L)

  • 2016 Rockpile Winery (Mauritson) Madrone Spring Red Wine 93 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Rockpile

Double blind. Aromas of dark fruit and plum, leather and herbs. Balanced, with abundant dark fruit and good supporting acidity. Finishes with plenty of fruit and good length. (V&M)

Flight 4 - Dinner/dessert wines (1 Note)

  • 2007 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon 95 Points

France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Coteaux du Layon

Lovely. Light golden color with an abundance of stone fruit on the nose and palate. Apricot, peach and honey notes with a tropical edge. The underlying acidity keeps this fresh and lively, never cloying.
