Flight 1 - Ganevat Mon Pere Vertical Flight 1: 08 and 07 (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Jean-François Ganevat Côtes du Jura Les Vignes de Mon Père

    France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

Nuts, marzipan, sorrel, bruised apple. A lot more oxidative than the 2007 tasted alongside it. An intense acidic bite in the mid-palate to help balance the wine out. Deep, dense and tons of complexity. Brightened up a touch with air, but still very much in the oxidative style.

    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: natural cork
    Stem: Korin white stem
Decant: N/A; poped and poured and tasted over the course of ~5h
Extra info: from vines of Savagnin Vert planted in 1930, on the blue marl of the Chalasses site. Aged for 130 months a la ouille in old demi-muid and barrels after a press à l'ancienne and no racking of the must. A small amount of sulphur is added only at bottling.
Vintage info from JF Ganevat: First vintage in their new, much drier cellar. Consequently the wine shows more (physical) oxidation. This was a generous vintage of good quality. They produced more than usual- 1 demi-muid and 2 barrels.

  • 2007 Jean-François Ganevat Côtes du Jura Les Vignes de Mon Père

    France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

Leaner, saltier, and edgier than the 2008 tasted ahead of it. No oxidative notes on this one compared to 2008. Finger limes, green apple, crushed pumice stone. I quite liked this at first, it was complex, focused, and the nerviness of it was quite appealing. As time went this became a touch disjointed and developed this acetone laden note on mid-palate that overpowered the rest of the wine and I struggled to see past.

    ABV: 12%
    Closure: natural cork
    Stem: Korin white stem
Decant: N/A; poped and poured and tasted over the course of ~5h
Extra info: from vines of Savagnin Vert planted in 1930, on the blue marl of the Chalasses site. Aged for 130 months a la ouille in old demi-muid and barrels after a press à l'ancienne and no racking of the must. A small amount of sulphur is added only at bottling.
Vintage info from JF Ganevat: Also complicated and quite lean. There was some botrytis but this time with more grey rot than noble, so intense sorting was required. The delicacy and patina came once again from long ageing.

Flight 2 - Ganevat Mon Pere Vertical Flight 2: 06, 05, 04 (3 Notes)

  • 2006 Jean-François Ganevat Côtes du Jura Les Vignes de Mon Père

    France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

Quite enjoyable on first pop and pour. Floral; a touch of reduction. Bright, salty, oyster shell. Some peaches and nuts. Like the 2007, this seems to change drastically with air, becoming more volatile and again showcasing that acetate note on the palate.

    ABV: 12.5%
    Closure: natural cork
    Stem: Korin white stem
Decant: N/A; poped and poured and tasted over the course of ~5h
Extra info: from vines of Savagnin Vert planted in 1930, on the blue marl of the Chalasses site. Aged for 130 months a la ouille in old demi-muid and barrels after a press à l'ancienne and no racking of the must. A small amount of sulphur is added only at bottling
Vintage info from JF Ganevat: Rainy and complicated. There was a lot of noble rot they kept. The must was fragrant of pineapple & mango when pressed. The long ageing brought back some freshness. He realised then that this long ageing made the wine fresher in warm & opulent vintages, and it gave flesh and weight in the cold & lean vintages.

  • 2005 Jean-François Ganevat Côtes du Jura Les Vignes de Mon Père

    France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

A touch fuller than the 2006, but still quite shy on the nose. With air, it turned a touch saltier, more expressive. Ripe pineapple, melon, quince, lots of tropical fruit.

    ABV: 12.5%
    Closure: natural cork
    Stem: Korin white stem
Decant: N/A; poped and poured and tasted over the course of ~5h

Vintage info from JF Ganevat: A good vintage with enough sun & enough rain. Really beautiful grapes. the first vintage where the fermentations started to take way longer, between 12 to 14 months.

  • 2004 Jean-François Ganevat Côtes du Jura Les Vignes de Mon Père

    France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

The prototypical Jura Savagnin nose. Initially thinner on the palate compared to 05 and 06. With air it, the palate filled out. Still quite a lean wine, with relatively fruit notes to speak of. Liquefied rocks medley at its finest. Lots of non-fruit notes, but a complete wine for the minerally inclined. Really liked this.

    ABV: 13%
    Closure: natural cork
    Stem: Korin white stem
Decant: N/A; poped and poured and tasted over the course of ~5h
Extra info: from vines of Savagnin Vert planted in 1930, on the blue marl of the Chalasses site. Aged for 130 months a la ouille in old demi-muid and barrels after a press à l'ancienne and no racking of the must. A small amount of sulphur is added only at bottling
Vintage info from JF Ganevat: The opposite of 2003. A lean and thin, yet extremely pretty wine; he never imagined making a wine like this. It was cold and alcohol was low, but thanks to the material itself - savagnin vert on blue marl, the wine has a great acid structure the wine for aging. Like in 98 and 00 the wines built up also in the cellar thanks to the lees' absorption.

Flight 3 - Ganevat Mon Pere Vertical Flight 3: 03, 02, 00 (3 Notes)

  • 2003 Jean-François Ganevat Côtes du Jura Les Vignes de Mon Père

    France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

Very oxidative and rich nose, but not quite as intense as 08. Seaspray, chestnuts, orange rind, amchoor, galangal, shiso flowers. Very concentrated on the palate. Long, fine finish. Probably the best bottle of 03 Mon Pere I've had.

    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: natural cork
    Stem: Korin white stem
Decant: N/A; poped and poured and tasted over the course of ~5h
Extra info: from vines of Savagnin Vert planted in 1930, on the blue marl of the Chalasses site. Aged for 130 months a la ouille in old demi-muid and barrels after a press à l'ancienne and no racking of the must. A small amount of sulphur is added only at bottling
Vintage info from JF Ganevat: The first very sunny and hot year, but surprisingly fresh thanks to the farming, the age of the vines and some rain in the winter (yet no rain in the summer). The first vintage of a new era and new dynamics: the savagnin fermented over-night, something Jean-Francois had never seen before. (Today is a different story, he has some 2015s still fermenting). They did not cool down the grapes that year, something they now do regularly.

  • 2002 Jean-François Ganevat Côtes du Jura Les Vignes de Mon Père

    France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

A more nuanced, quieter wine. Perilla leaf, sambac jasmine, meyer lemon. Less concentrated on the palate than the previous wines tasted. It felt like a quite fragile wine, though it did not fade as time passed and stayed much the same.

    ABV: 13%
    Closure: natural cork
    Stem: Korin white stem
Decant: N/A; poped and poured and tasted over the course of ~5h
Extra info: from vines of Savagnin Vert planted in 1930, on the blue marl of the Chalasses site. Aged for 130 months a la ouille in old demi-muid and barrels after a press à l'ancienne and no racking of the must. A small amount of sulphur is added only at bottling
Vintage info from JF Ganevat: Beautiful vintage, fresh with a short summer, with a fantastic "arriere-saison." Nine weeks of northern wind which allowed the grapes to concentrate without over-ripening. Beautiful acidity.

  • 2000 Jean-François Ganevat Côtes du Jura Les Vignes de Mon Père

    France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

Soft, but not quite as soft and dainty as the 02. Loomi, nuts, saline a touch of beeswax. Very approachable, but with a relatively short finish. Accessible, but with a short finish.

    ABV: 13%
    Closure: natural cork
    Stem: Korin white stem
Decant: N/A; poped and poured and tasted over the course of ~5h
Extra info: from vines of Savagnin Vert planted in 1930, on the blue marl of the Chalasses site. Aged for 130 months a la ouille in old demi-muid and barrels after a press à l'ancienne and no racking of the must. A small amount of sulphur is added only at bottling
Vintage info from JF Ganevat: Quite similar to 1998 with a bit more light and sun. They had to wait a long time to get the right maturity. Grapes were picked on October 6th with a beautiful balance and a great pH. The wine was very balanced from the start. There were 2 bottlings in that vintage, one aged 130 months, the other 180.

Flight 4 - Red Intermezzo (2 Notes)

  • 2009 Jean-François Ganevat Arbois Sainte Cecyle

    France, Jura, Arbois

Pinot Trousseau blend. First bottle felt fractured, all over the place and faded quickly. A second bottle was opened. Showed much better. Red fruit, fresh. Lovely.

    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: natural cork
    Stem: Korin white stem

  • 2017 Cecile Tremblay Chambolle-Musigny Les Cabottes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Suuuuper reduced on first open. Very pretty bright red fruit underneath. Raspberries, cherries, peonies. A touch of oak frames the wine nicely. Lovely wine that needs a fair bit of time in bottle to sort itself out, or at least a very long decant.

    ABV: 13%
    Closure: natural cork
    Stem: Sophienwald Cru
    Decant: 2h

Flight 5 - Ganevat Mon Pere Vertical Flight 4: 99, 98, and 05 Cuvee du pepe (3 Notes)

  • 1999 Jean-François Ganevat Côtes du Jura Les Vignes de Mon Père

    France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

Similar to the 08, very oxidative, rich, and powerful. Dried fruits, salted almonds, seaweed, a hint of iodine. Bracing acidity and an eternal finish. Very sherry like. It reminded me a lot some fino amontillados. Lots of comparisons to the first 08/07 flight where one was very oxodative and the other much fresher.

    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: natural cork
    Stem: Korin white stem
Extra info: from vines of Savagnin Vert planted in 1930, on the blue marl of the Chalasses site. Aged for 130 months a la ouille in old demi-muid and barrels after a press à l'ancienne and no racking of the must. A small amount of sulphur is added only at bottling
Extra info: 130 months in demi-muid and barrels a la ouille with no added SO2.
Vintage info from JF Ganevat: Beautiful vintage; sunny but not too warm. Grapes of beautiful quality and great yields (37-38 hl/ha).

  • 1998 Jean-François Ganevat Côtes du Jura Les Vignes de Mon Père

    France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

Hauntingly beautiful. Bright, saline, incredibly complex nose. Delicate on the palate. Some felt the finish was a touch short, to me it felt more akin to a filter sweep fade out. Lots of comparisons to the first 08/07 flight where one was very oxidative and the other much fresher.

    ABV: 13%
    Closure: natural cork
    Stem: Korin white stem
Decant: N/A; poped and poured and tasted over the course of ~5h
Extra info: from vines of Savagnin Vert planted in 1930, on the blue marl of the Chalasses site. Aged for over 7 years a la ouille in old demi-muid and barrels after a press à l'ancienne and no racking of the must. A small amount of sulphur is added only at bottling
Vintage info from JF Ganevat: First vintage of Ganevat back at the estate, beginning conversion to organic and biodynamic] Really cold vintage, no sun or heat. A vintage that forced you to wait to harvest. The northern wind concentrated the fruit and the acidity. Not a lot of sugar, so not very rich in alcohol. Thin compared to other vintages, but the long lees aging helped beef it up.

Big, powerful wine, as is expected of vin jaune. Dried stone fruit, hazelnuts, cagaita, chenpi, urfa (without the spiciness).

    ABV: 14%
    Closure: natural cork
    Stem: Korin white stem
Decant: N/A; poped and poured and tasted over the course of ~5h
Extra info: 100% Chardonnay aged under a veil of yeast a la vin jaune for over 13 years.
