Introduction

Six of us got together to drink some nice wines. The Peking duck was outstanding, and the other dishes were all delicious.

Flight 1 - Champagne (3 Notes)

The consensus was that this was the favorite flight.

  • 2015 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut 97 Points

    France, Champagne

The expressive nose displaying generous sweet yellow fruit with a hint of white, lemon curd, pear, apple, honeysuckle, brioche, white pepper, spice, and limestone. With air, candied lemon peel becomes pronounced. Excellent concentration, beautifully layered pure sweet lemon fruit, very fine generous mousse, rich and sweet but also fresh, energetic, precise and focused, bright acidity, strong mineral, and a long sweet yellow citrus fruit finish with a hint of white pepper at the end. Although youthful, this is drinking exceptionally well.

  • 2016 Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Les Barres 94 Points

    France, Champagne

I was informed that this is 100% Pinot Meunier. Very Ceric Bouchard like vinous nose displaying subtle yellow and red fruit, apple, peach and raspberry soda, marzipan, sweet spices and limestone. Beautifully integrated palate, finely layered subtle yellow fruit, very fine shy mousse, elegant and polished, medium acidity, fine mineral, and a medium to long subtle yellow fruit driven nutty finish. It really reminds me of a BdN Cedric Bouchard. This is a very user-friendly stylized wine.

Flight 2 - Mongeard-Mugneret (3 Notes)

  • 2002 Mongeard-Mugneret Echezeaux 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

There's a bit of controversy as some think the bottle is corked. Medium expressive nose displaying generous red and black fruit fruit, strawberry candy, cherry pie, black cherry, a hint of sous bois, grilled cep, soy, Vosne spice, iron, dark spices, and earth. Excellent concentration, generous ripe and slightly dry red and black fruit, warm and round, medium acidity, earthy mineral, noticeable but non-obtrusive tannins, and a medium long finish generous red fruit driven finish with a hint of a dirty damp cellar/Brett at the end. While I don't get any TCA taint but it is slightly dirty. It somewhat reminds me of some of the 1983 reds which were affected by rots. The rating is low due to the slightly dirty finish. Caveat emptor, i.e. excellent provenance.

  • 2002 Mongeard-Mugneret Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Petits Monts 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

The same cellar at the 02 Echezeaux, i.e. excellent provenance. Initially, a bit tight, only showing non-descriptive red fruit and iron. With air, cool red and blue fruit, strawberry, blueberry, floral perfume, soy, a hint of sous bois, sweet spices and earth. Fully integrated palate, cool red and blue fruit, silky and polished, perfect amount of acidity, steely mineral, and a long cool red and blue fruit driven floral finish. This wine is fascinating in that the fruit comes and goes. Unlike the Echezeaux, this is completely clean. There is also a hint of metallic bitterness at the end which it not too bothersome. This can actually develop further, gaining more tertiary notes. This shows that the Domaine's wines need a lot of time.

  • 2008 Mongeard-Mugneret Echezeaux 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Expressive nose displaying bright red fruit, mostly cherry with a hint of strawberry, more pronounced sous bois than the 02, rose, grilled cep, Vosne spice and limestone. There is an exotic herbal/marijuana note that I associate with the top 08 red Burgundies. Fully integrated palate, nicely layered generous red fruit, silky and fluid, bright acidity, limestone mineral, and a long bright cherry fruit driven finish with the herbal note at the end. The 08 red Burgundies matured quickly than originally anticipated. The 08 Echezeaux is drinking beautifully.

Flight 3 - Red Burgundy (2 Notes)

  • 2015 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Expressive youthful nose displaying concentrated red fruit, strawberry concentrate, cherry jam, grilled fat, sweet spices and earth. Excellent concentration, generous concentrated sweet red fruit, rich but also harmonious, good acidity, earthy mineral, and a long sweet red fruit driven finish. This clearly displays the style of Roumier, i.e. excellent fruit concentraion, purity and concentration. Although drinking very well, the overall impression is not terribly complex which shouldn't surprise anyone.
