Introduction

Hidden Label night. Along with a smattering of the ‘1960’ bottlings. Lots of guests and the odd extra wine, but most supplied by Andrew; thanks for the generosity. CD = Cellar Door Price, AK = via Andrew, not including tonight’s extra 10%! The 1960 wines are still, of course, $19.60 which I can see becoming a bit of an issue as time goes by!

Flight 1 (14 Notes)

  • NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Edition 167eme

    France, Champagne

{cork, 12%} [Guest - Adam] A grand nose indeed; terrific bread, yeast, cheese; the ultimate bakery. Intense & powderful. Polished palate of impressive integrity. Rich, creamy texture, tropically rich yellow fruits, medium acid, full weight, fine creamy bubbles, long finish. Much wow factor. Hugely drinkable. Fabulous stuff.

  • NV Sidewood Estate Sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonnay

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills

{cork} [Andrew] Pale colour, ripe grapefruit and grass nose with little yeast apparent. Vivid bubbles, medium -sized and vigorous. Dry rockmelon fruit, soundly ripe but with little autolysis character. Light-medium weight (after the tyrrell old vaine distKrug!), medium-length fresh finish. Good value. CD$24, AK$13

  • 2023 Sidewood Estate Sauvignon Blanc

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills

{screwcap, 11.5%} [Andrew] A nod to the old Marlborough style, but with a grassy aspect tempering the gooseberry character. Light bodied, it has a fresh palate of sweaty yet oddly attractive flavours as the nose promised. Medium acid, dry, short/medium finish. Quite characterful, but for drinking now. CD$22, AK$12

  • 2023 Knappstein Riesling

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

{screwcap, 12.5%} [Andrew] Soft lime aromas. Similar palate of lime minerals, sandstone. Tangy sort of orange-sorbet finish but always stays dry. Light/medium weight, medium acid, short-medium length. Sound enough, but an early-drinker I think. CD$22, AK$14

  • 2017 Tyrrell's Sémillon 1960 Old Vine Distillery Block

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

{screwcap, 10.5%} [Andrew] Smoky nose; brown apples and mouldering grass. Quite earthy on the palate too; mature, with slightly flat fruit. Lowish acidity, light weight; seems very advanced but without much complexity. Thoroughly overshadowed by the following wine.

  • 2017 Tyrrell's Sémillon Single Vineyard Stevens

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

{screwcap, 11%} [Andrew] Startlingly good wine, especially for the price. Grass and hay and fresh citric semillon aromas. Grassy, juicy palate, with medium acidity, light-weight body, dry with a little twist of developing complexity on the medium length finish. Should improve for an age. CD$47, AK$21

  • 2023 Miles from Nowhere Malbec

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

{screwcap, 14.2%} [Andrew] Quite raw and youthful. Vivid cranberry fruit and raspberry, with little oak evident. The palate has medium acid, low dusty tannins and plenty of rustic, (verging on coarse) red fruit. Explosively intense though. Slightly short finish ends with a grapeskin tannic astringency but always dry and savoury. Needs a little time to settle which will help tame it a bit. CD$24, AK$13

  • 2018 Poggiotondo Chianti Riserva

    Italy, Tuscany, Chianti

{diam, 14%} [Andrew] Some blackberry here, but all savoury and dusty otherwise. Has an inky sort of character to it; becomes blacker on the palate. Medium weight, medium acid. Almost straddles a new/old world style of sangiovese. Partly matured, medium length finish. A lot of wine for the money, but best within a few years I think.

  • 2020 Leconfield Cabernet Sauvignon

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

{screwcap, 14.5%} [Andrew] Classic minty nose – and indeed palate – I always associate with Leconfield. There’s a bit of spice on the palate though. Low/medium acid, medium weight overall. Friendly tannins, short/medium length. Others like this a lot more than I – just the way it goes I guess. CD$36, AK$17

  • 2017 Longview Vineyard Shiraz The Piece

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills

{diam, 14.5%} [Andrew] Polished and seductive. Cool-climate, blue-tinged shiraz, spearmint, black pepper. Classy black fruit on the palate, medium/full in weight, low, finely dusty tannins, and matching low/medium acidity. Medium-long finish. Thing is, it all meshes together beautifully. Unsurprisingly given the price, the best red of the night. At about peak drinking for this style. CD$90, AK$39

  • 2020 Elderton Shiraz

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

{screwcap} [Andrew] Blue fruit and a malt/chocolate character. All the best of old-style Barossa shiraz. Low/medium powdery tannin, gentle oak, medium/full weight. Good heft on the front and mid-palate, medium length finish that’s rich and ripe but not overdone. CD$36, AK$19

  • 2016 Moppity Vineyards Shiraz Single Vineyard Quarry Block

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Hilltops

{screwcap, 12%} [Andrew] More minty-tinged cool-climate fruit here too, but laced with blackberry and gentle oak. Medium weight and clearly maturing, it’s also got a leathery sort of character to it. Soft tannins, low/medium acid. About ready to drop; an good value at sub-$20.

  • 2023 Frogmore Creek Riesling Iced

    Australia, Tasmania

{375ml, screwcap, 7%} [Andrew] Well, blind, I thought this was some kind of Moscato, with the medium-sweet tropical fruit (although lime-tinged, in retrospect) and the frizzante character. Light bodied, low in acid and fairly short-finishing. Nice enough, but needs dessert to balance it out a bit.

  • 2015 Roberto Anselmi I Capitelli

    Italy, Veneto, Veneto IGT

{375ml, 12%} Light coppery nose in a passito style. Light/medium weight, medium-dry palate of bananas & pineapple. No botrytis, not fortified either. Some honey flavours here too. Low/medium acid, and finishes a bit short. Wonder if it’s intended to drink younger than this? Interesting.
