Tim says, "I'll pick up some Speed Queen Barbeque, and we can open some wines, and have a slide. Let's make it 1:00pm on Friday."
An academic exercise of trying to figure out what pairs well with Speed Queen Barbeque.
Ben joins the party and brings more options for BBQ Pairings
Now, it's just getting nuts.
What more is there to say.
Ben's just pulling stuff from the fridge now. Whatever is open and drinkable.
When the table gets together to buy a d'Yquem to see how it pairs with Barbeque, you know you've hit Mega-Slide status.
When Tim sends his e-mail the next morning about the cabbie waking him up and telling him to get out of the cab, the Mega-Slide status is further cemented.
When Tim follows it up with a simple e-mail that says, "Anybody seen my briefcase?", it's now legendary.
2007 Scarborough Riesling Cease & Desist Dineen Vineyard
USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley
Nose was all minerals and petrol.
Had a nice coating mouthfeel. Some apple flavors, but lots of minerality. A bit of oiliness, almost kerosene like. Spicy, white pepper finish.
Interesting stuff. Really focused and sharp. More mineral than fruit. Grabs your attention.

Stony, crisp green apple and stone fruit on the nose.
Such great balance of spicy and savory stone fruit and sweetness. Great green apple tanginess. White pepper finish.

2005 Chappellet Cabernet Franc
USA, California, Napa Valley
Intense nose of dusty, oaky fruits. Baked blueberries.
Big tannins. Dusty, spicy fruit. Getting the oak. Touch light on the mid-palate.
This really opened up after several hours, and smoothed out very nice into a rich blue fruits and a long, long spicy finish.
Good stuff once it had time to open.

2007 Doña Paula Cabernet Franc Alluvia
Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco, Tupungato
Nose is rich, big blue and black fruits. Touch of dustiness.
Lighter than the nose suggests. Nice acidity with well balanced tannins. Has a stony, austere note to the blue fruits.
I really liked this wine. Reminded me more of Bordeaux with its austerity and body than Argentina.

2005 Howell Mountain Vineyards Zinfandel Beatty Ranch
USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
Dusty, brambly, baked blackberries on the nose. Smells pretty hot and rich.
On the palate, it is surprisingly bright and light on its feet. Especially after the nose. Fresh, dusty, cedary blackberries. Really nice touch of pepper on the finish.

2006 Boekenhoutskloof Syrah
South Africa, Coastal Region, Franschhoek Valley
Nose is rich, smoky and meaty.
Has a surprising lightness on the palate. Was a bit taken aback by this, but it was very pleasant. Great acidity. Smoky and minerally. Has a old world austerity to complement the rich, spicy fruit.
This was really good wine.

1994 Hiedler Grüner Veltliner Thal
Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal
Somewhat of a muted nose. Tim says ripe red apples, and I have to agree.
Still a touch thick on the palate. Acidity is still fairly strong. Candy, butterscotch flavors. Alcohol soaked peaches. Spicy white pepper finish.
First aged Gruner for me, and I liked it. Still quite vibrant and alive.
