Introduction
Tim says, "I'll pick up some Speed Queen Barbeque, and we can open some wines, and have a slide. Let's make it 1:00pm on Friday."
Flight 1 - The Beginning (9 notes)
An academic exercise of trying to figure out what pairs well with Speed Queen Barbeque.
Had a nice coating mouthfeel. Some apple flavors, but lots of minerality. A bit of oiliness, almost kerosene like. Spicy, white pepper finish.
Interesting stuff. Really focused and sharp. More mineral than fruit. Grabs your attention.
Such great balance of spicy and savory stone fruit and sweetness. Great green apple tanginess. White pepper finish.
Big tannins. Dusty, spicy fruit. Getting the oak. Touch light on the mid-palate.
This really opened up after several hours, and smoothed out very nice into a rich blue fruits and a long, long spicy finish.
Good stuff once it had time to open.
Lighter than the nose suggests. Nice acidity with well balanced tannins. Has a stony, austere note to the blue fruits.
I really liked this wine. Reminded me more of Bordeaux with its austerity and body than Argentina.
On the palate, it is surprisingly bright and light on its feet. Especially after the nose. Fresh, dusty, cedary blackberries. Really nice touch of pepper on the finish.
Has a surprising lightness on the palate. Was a bit taken aback by this, but it was very pleasant. Great acidity. Smoky and minerally. Has a old world austerity to complement the rich, spicy fruit.
This was really good wine.
Big and rich, but has a nice touch of tannic balance. Baked fruit flavors. Really long finish of salted meats.
Really smooth mouthfeel. Rich, baked plums and cherries. Nice tannic balance.
Awesome with BBQ pork shoulder.
Still a touch thick on the palate. Acidity is still fairly strong. Candy, butterscotch flavors. Alcohol soaked peaches. Spicy white pepper finish.
First aged Gruner for me, and I liked it. Still quite vibrant and alive.
Flight 2 - Ben Raids His Cellar (4 notes)
Ben joins the party and brings more options for BBQ Pairings
Just a kiss of sweetness. A fresh greenness and floral hints. Stone fruit and crisp apple. Great acidity. Very long finish.
You would be hard pressed to find a better domestic Riesling.
Getting nice flavors of peach with a touch of bitter almond. Seems a bit watery, but I think it's because it's too cold.
Nice with the BBQ.
The palate is just loaded with fresh and bright blackberries. Great tannin and acid balance. The fruit has a sweetness (not RS) that is refreshing. Spicy, long finish.
Brilliant wine.
Really smooth mouth with nice tannic balance. Blackcurrants and mint. Long, spicy finish.
Think we sold this a little short by not decanting it first. Probably would've opened more.
Flight 3 - Nick & Kara Show Up (3 notes)
Smells so fresh and young yet. No signs of age. Fresh blackberry, stone and bramble. Cedar notes.
Fresh, austere blackberry notes. Some dusty cocoa flavors. Big tannins yet. Still a youngster, and it seems to have the fruit and acidity to go and go.
Thanks to Nick for opening this baby.
Good bite on the mouth. Fresh strawberries and the tanginess of redcurrants. Nice spicy finish.
Surprisingly light. Sweet cherries and raspberries dominate, but there is also a note of juniper berry and a touch of sweet pineapple. Long finish of spicy pepper.
Flight 4 - Ben Re-Raids His Cellar (3 notes)
Now, it's just getting nuts.
Good God! F----n' beautiful. Such great balance of tannins and acidity. Rose petals, fig jam and dried cherries. A forever finish.
Big tannins, but fairly light bodied. Very stony and austere. Dried, sour cherry flavors.
Good now, but seems a bit young. Especially when drinking it beside the 1999 Lazzarito.
Juicy pink grapefruit juice and prosecco.
I know it's blood orange, not pink grapefruit, but it pretty much tastes like what it is. Would be great with breakfast.
Flight 5 - Chateau d'Yquem (1 note)
What more is there to say.
Velvety mouthfeel of apricot nectar and honey. Has a flavor that reminds me of ripe peaches that are beginning to reach the overripe, dripping, falling apart, messy hands phase.
The purity of this wine is unbelievable.
Insanely good with Speed Queen Barbeque.
Flight 6 - Ludicrous Speed (3 notes)
Ben's just pulling stuff from the fridge now. Whatever is open and drinkable.
Pretty sharp on the mouth, with decent effervesence. Bit of the fermented grain also. A touch thick. Not getting much in the way of fruit.
Has been open for a day.
Still pretty tight and precise on the palate. Nice lees-y flavor with some bitter citrus. More focused than the 1997.
Also open for a day.
A nice yeasty, lees-y note on the palate. Good bubble yet. Lemony notes with a long finish.
Also open for a day.
Closing
When the table gets together to buy a d'Yquem to see how it pairs with Barbeque, you know you've hit Mega-Slide status.
When Tim sends his e-mail the next morning about the cabbie waking him up and telling him to get out of the cab, the Mega-Slide status is further cemented.
When Tim follows it up with a simple e-mail that says, "Anybody seen my briefcase?", it's now legendary.
