CG wanted to go for a curry at 2am. He could hardly walk into the taxi when he left The Hide Bar. When I arrived back home my wife suddenly woke up and said "3am - what the feck have you been doing?"

"I was with Toby" was all I could think of as a defence.

Eric - is this still going to happen?  I am technically on the wagon from this evening for a while, although I have special dispensation for your visit

Ladies - Eric has confirmed that he will be in London as from Sunday and has suggested meeting up Thursday evening (that is Thursday 13th).

Who is up for this?

Toby and myself are confirmed.  Anyone else?

If the numbers are right I was thinking lets book a table at Terroirs at Charing Cross - amazingly different wines that no-one has ever heard of.

Can you let me know asap and I'll try and get a table booked

Cheers

P

as per my text, we're at a Burgundy tasting that night and i think there's a couple of similar events on too, but if you do head back to the Hide i could join afterwards for a glass or 2 !

Eric has said he might bring along a couple of US wines (Echo Falls and Blossom Hill???).  I think depending on numbers we do either Terroirs or The Hide.  Terroirs would be a nice change but they would not be as laissez-faire in their attitude to bring other bottles in.

Lets see how many are coming then decide on venue.

Thus far Khamen, Tobes and myself, with KK turning up p1ssed on DRC later in the evening

Toby will probably add more details, but the Hide bar at the last event said that we need to stop bringing so much booze and start buying a bit more (ie: stop taking the p1ss).  This sounds fair to me.  Let Eric bring his Blossom Hill and we'll buy from the menu.

Toby - would that be a fair summary of what was said?

Pretty much, although it was far more subtle than that!

To be fair, we have had a wee too many non-buying sessions last year so its just a case of redressing the balance - If we can get both James and Craig to come over then the service charge for the year is covered... We just have to send Peter home in an ambulance ;-)

With the focus on CT events being spread around (Cambridge, The buggering bishop of birmingham and solero etc) we just have not put enough cold hard cash behind the bar for the usage that we get. A couple of sessions of clearing out their wine list followed by a BYO is in order.

We can, however make a suggestion as to what to get in as bin end stock provided that we guarantee to buy half the amount (i.e. 3 of 6, 6 of 12 etc)...

You know, I've wondered about that for some time... Figured one of you had some skin in the game (landlord, owners, serious IOUs, etc.)... Or gathered your magnetic personalities allowed for the abandonment of crass retail concerns.

I certainly don't need to bring booze and am happy to chip in for stuff off the list. I just thought you might like to try a couple of New World oddities. (Sine Qua Non and Quilceda Creek.) I am also all for whatever is easiest and ruffles the fewest feathers. Seriously!

I like oddities!

How about we work out where to get together and work out the drinks thing after?

Toby if it's the Hide maybe tell them we have a couple bottles being brought in but I'll grab a Ch Margaux fom the list as a soother (if they've got any left)

I'm in ... I'm a newbie to the CT forums/hosting Eric, but an old hand at drinking unreasonable quantities of decent plonk.

Let me know when and where to turn up and I'll bring my wallet and a piece of paper with my name and address for the cabbie afterwards...

Ooo! Fresh meat to be sacrificed... We like that!

Drop either me or PJaines a PM with your phone number, in all likelihood it will be The Hide Bar in Bermondsey http://www.thehidebar.com/

Given the numbers Terroirs is now a non-starter due to table sizes etc.  I recken, let Eric bring his booze and then lets spank their wine lists for the rest.

Welcome Brady and Alex - I hope you like hangovers.  It will be great to have some new faces join in

Sadly Thursdays are a no-go for me so I can't be there - probably just as well, as I'm having a dry January.  Have fun!

I'm supposed to be dry on weekdays this month. Except for Burg week. And fortunately, this is in Burg week. :)

word to the british wise: NEVER turn down an offer of sqn or qc. it probably won't fit your palates, but these are some of the most difficult wines to find here in the states, with years' long waiting lists to get an allocation, going for high multiples over release price on the secondary market.

a wise decision. and post your thoughts. a newbie like me with a small wine budget can't afford these wines, so i love hearing what other people say about them!

Of course even Eric is unlikely to be able to source any Echo Falls or Blossom Hill. These treasures are so highly allocated that only the Sultan of Brunei, a few assorted potentates, emirs, grand viziers, and other mysteriously named nabobs are able to acquire any of these.

Well, then there was that embarrassing pilferage of a shipment to Buckingham Palace...

I believe those particular fine wines are the preserve of the English market.  Lucky us.

Tobes - I'm trusting you are speaking with Paolo at The Hide about our arrival and booking a table?  Should be a good - especially as it will be my first drinking day for 10 days

I will probably be there from 5:30 onwards - I only work up at Liverpool Street and will stagger down once my never ending meetings have finished.

By the way, this will also be a semi-birthday booze up for me as well as it is my birthday the next week.

Remembering our late thread on uneven wines that usually make up host gifts from our friends and guests, let me say that Eric is welcome at 1243 Forest Ave anytime!!!

Always better to show up 'heavy' than show up 'light' is my motto.

I am a trifle worried that the richness of these New World wines might be over the top based on what else we are drinking, but they are two iconic examples that I thought would be fun to try. Probably about 198 Parker points between the two of them for what that is worth (not too much in my book any more.)
