I did buy some Sparkling Apple juice for the grand kids yesterday. I think the therapy is working or the broken computer allowed me to regain my senses. I look at the offers and think that would be really nice, but when would I drink it? Pass by with the same thoughts as when I see cool duds and think when would I were them. Too much wine and too many clothes. Now a nice Mini Cooper in the drive would be pretty cool. Wine Berserkers Anniversary is coming up in a month. Now that will be a test of will.

I'm on the right track, but still in need of keeping the habit in check. Purchases in 2008 were a total of $20,000. Last year I cut that down to $11,500. This year I'll end up at $8,000. Not bad given my purchase of 2007 CdP and 2007 Port. Thank god 2007 was crappy in Bordeaux.

Made it through December without a purchase. Hoping to keep total purchases in 2011 under 100 bottles.

Just purchased 2 375s of Sauterne for NYE... But still kept December fairly tame.

I tried to impose a moratorium to absorb the holdiay financial damage, but ran by the local Costco and my ability to hold out is waining. They just got in the following. Pricing is decent to good on all:

2007 Merus Cab
2007 Joseph Phelps Insignia
2006 Staglin Cab
2007 Mondavi Reserve Cab
2007 Beringer Private Select Cab
2007 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape
2007 Merryvale Profile
2007 Dominus

It'll be interesting to see who last the longest this year without buying any wine.

I am out faster than Kramer on the now famous Seinfeld episode.

I purchased 2 bottles of 1927 Domaine Bory Rivesaltes. Currently looking for Vintage Ports at reasonable prices.

I've seen threads about abstinence from drinking, but this thread has been quiet.

Anybody besides me still standing?

My only hope is if Prohibition is brought back.  Of course I'll need it repealed in 2 to 3 years so I can stock up again.

I've made it 7 days.
Lots of temptation, but no purchasing so far...

OK, wineismylife (Joe) and cookiefiend (Dawn), my bottle, 2006 Fidelitas Boushey, a red Bordeaux style valued at $49.27. CT average 93 points (only 3 reviews all 93).

Wanna play?

I'm in.  I'll try to find a bottle in the cellar around the $50.00/CT93 mark as well and announce it later.

btw, I will not funnel any wine purchases through anybody else including my wife but if she sneaks out behind my back and buys something I'm not counting it!  I didn't break the moratorium!

One more caveat...I presume this does NOT including if we happen to buy a bottle from a list while dining out?  Otherwise, I'm NOT in!

I'm in too.
My bottle: 2007 Penner-Ash, Carabella Vineyard, valued at $50.05, CT average 91.7

But if my husband (Joe) buys something, is it all over but the shoutin' for me then?
If I have to sit on him - pppfffttt - I'm in trouble!

I'm good with the NO clamps on spouse rule, just no intentional funneling.

I'm also OK with a bottle while dining out rule, just no take homes.

Anybody beside me, wineismylife, and cookie wanna play?

What about automatic wine clubs? Because I'll be dead in a month or so at latest by those... hmmm, maybe I should have asked before I put my bottle up. I'll live by your ruling either way.

The gang of three has caucused and agree to allow all comers up to an even dozen players. The winner might get up to 11 bottles. The pot is now at 3, with two going to winner. New players increase the pot.

We'll leave it open until January 15 for folks to sign up.

The basic rule is no personal wine purchases since New Year's. Your in the game until you buy something besides a restuarant purchase or automatic club purchase where you have no control over allotment. Then you're out and your bottle goes into the pot.

I'm in. 2000 Chateau Le Gay Pomerol $53 CT avg.

Y'all don't know who you're dealing with here. Losing 60% of my income when baby comes in a few weeks. Tax season to keep me so busy I can't see straight. You're goin' down, suckas!

Two questions

I'm part of an informal tasting group that gets together at a local retailer, picks out several bottles to try and then splits the cost evenly among everyone. Is that ok?

I have two gift certificates. Can I use those since I'm not technically spending my own money?

Here's my unofficial opinion...

If you do something like a group tasting where everybody is pitching in to purchase the wines or maybe even a regular weekly retail tasting I'd say that's OK.  I do those almost weekly myself and I wasn't even considering that to be part of the deal.  Heck, even winery tasting fees could blow it under that scenario!

The short of it is if you're not buying a bottle to place into your cellar or wine rack for even an hour that's OK in my book.

Gift certificates?  hmmmm....  When do they expire?  If not for quite some time I say hold them until you're the winner and then cash them in.    Or maybe blow them this weekend, get them out of the way and here we go!

My two cents worth probably worth one cent.

I'd like to address something on the flip side of this equation...who to let participate.  I don't want to be exclusionary but hey, if you buy 6 bottles a year from the grocery store then don't sign up for this bet.  That's not fair to us addicts!    We're on the honor system here boys and girls...if you're normally a serious buyer of wine (i.e. on at least a few to many mailers, spend a decent percent of your annual income on wine, whatever!!!) jump into the pool, bet a bottle from your cellar and honestly let us know if you made it or blew it.

Thank God for all you posters! My wife is firmly convinced that the purchase of a third cooler proves that I have some kind of a problem, but I now see that I am just fine... ***Whew!***
