i picked up 6 of the 2000 Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve for $30 a bottle that everyone else was getting this week.  i figured even if it is an off vintage a $125 bottle marked down to $30 will still taste better than the other $30 Napa cabs out there.

These guys seem pretty efficient/reasonable for the UK:

Thanks for that Colonel.Nice contact to have.Have you much Champagne in your cellar.I read an article lately that 1996 Dom P was hard enough to get and not on the shelves like it was (rated 98 by Mr.P).I saw that Farrs had 19 cases two weeks ago and now all gone so when i saw the lot  local to me i purchased.I have been told to watch out for Billecart Salmon G.C 1996.Any other suggestions appreciated.

No the Champagne I keep in the fridge and drink.
I have just put the 1999 Dom Perignon in my cellar temporarily as it's the only way I have of buying when I'm out of the UK.
It's for New Year and a significant birthday of my significant other (Trouble and Strife).
I have drunk the 1996 but I'm afraid my taste buds aren't good enough to distinguish between different Dom's - they all taste great to me!
My most frequently purchased Champagne is Tesco's Premier Cru.  Always great.  Now costs 14.95 (taxes paid), but it's still good value.  It won various blind tastings a while back, although I suspect the source of the grapes shifts.
I saw the Farr offer, but beat their price with www.champagneuk.com .
Now bear in mind I haven't actually seen the Champane I believe it hit my cellar within 24hrs.
Have a look at their large sizes - could be fun for a BIG event.
L.

Found a HUGE sale at Kahn's Fine Wines here in Indianapolis & Carmel, where they're having their largest tasting of the year on Thursday.  I went over there Saturday and they were nearly giving the stuff away.  Bought some everyday drinkers for me and my wife:
2004 Ceviche Sauvignon Blanc
2005 Firestone Vineyard Riesling
N.V. Liberty Creek Zinfandel
2006 Sebeka Shiraz Pinotage "Cape Blend"
2005 Chateau Thomas Winery Gewürztraminer
N.V. Sokol Blosser Evolution No. 11 (6 bottles)

Not much to really write home about, but what the heck.  I couldn't pass up the deals!

  • 2006 Ayres Vineyard Pinot Noir Piper
  • 2006 Ayres Vineyard Pinot Noir Pioneer Willamette Valley3 bottles of each.   Ribbon Ridge AVA is one place that you cannot go wrong if you're a pinophile.

The more I read the boards the more humble I (should) get.
For example I know my Gironde wines, but have never heard of the last 8 (I assume mainly US) wines mentioned.
So much more experimenting to do ;)

Colonel, most of the stuff I bought last time I hadn't heard of either.  I like to try different things all of the time.  The problem with buying them on closeout/sale is if I find something I love, I may not be able to get it anymore!

Here's a couple I just picked up late this week:

2004 Baron Philippe de Rothschild Chardonnay Vin de Pays d'Oc (6 bottles)
1991 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage Quinta de Vargellas

    Here's the little beast.

Had good experiences with both Tesco and Sainsbury in buying wines on line.  They seem to be having frequent price wars, so look for the 25% Off, 33% Off and BOGOF (buy on get one free - I wasn't being rude).

Think Tesco's get a bit of a bad press when it comes to wine.  Their finest selection is pretty eclectic and I normally pick up a couple of bottles when I'm back in the UK for the suitcase home.  Normal I pick up the award winning Trimbach Cuvée Frédéric Emile.  On my last two trips (within the last month) I picked up 2003 Yering Station Shiraz Viognier Reserve and an unkown (on CT at least) 2005 Cote Rotie by Francois Arnaud last week. This is in addition to two NY wines I bought from New York Vintage in Manhattan below who gave me a tasting of 5 pretty impressive NY wines, looking forward to trying more next time!

    2002 Macari Bergen Road
2005 Beconic Bay Winery Chardonnay La Barique

Am happy to report that a mixed half case of Martinelli Chardonnays arrived this week.  I had to wait for the rest of the country's allocations to be fullfilled before I could get these, but the Martinelli folks told me "it's a red wine world" so I could probably get what I wanted.  Close to Marcassin (?) as the wine maker is the same and they are vineyard neighbors, but who knows?  Still, I confess I do really like these wines!

    To Wrighty,

Being a Long Islander, I wish you had distinguished between us and the Finger Lakes   (since they usually kick our butts).  Glad you liked our wines (it's Peconic Bay, BTW) and I'd be happy to give an in-person tour any time you're in the neighborhood.

The biggest negative I heard about Tescos was a story that they refuse to buy from some wineries (e.g. a major SA operation which sells Kumala was supposed to be one) unless they bottle with screw caps.  The story is that it prevents 'bad cork' returns, but I find it hard to believe they get a lot coming back.  I suspect they have customers who don't own a corkscrew.
I'm afraid I buy mainly Champagne from them - still cork ;)
JS has had some great offers on weird Aussie Shiraz when I started branching out.  Drank a few and was impressed: sadly they were quaffing wines and I didn't note the names.  I'd recognise the bottles again though (do others find that?)

I am bringing in the summer purchases too.  Recently added

2005 Radio-Coteau Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard
    2005 Radio-Coteau Syrah Cherry Camp
2006 Montes Pinot Noir Limited Selection
    2003 Allegrini Palazzo della Torre
2005 Bodega Numanthia Termes Toro Numanthia
2005 Herman Story Syrah White Hawk
    2005 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape
2004 Rombauer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
2000 Beringer Vineyards Merlot Bancroft Ranch

Of all of these, I am really looking forward most to the Montes.  I am hoping that I have found that elusive inexpensive Pinot that actually tastes like pinot.

    Cheers

I thought about picking up some of the 05 Clos des Papes CdP as well with all the talk of Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year.  I'm fairly certain it might be the one.  I still might, but I have to be willing to spend about $85/bottle and I'm not sure I really want to right now.

1970 Graham's Vintage Port (YES, this is the one I've decided for my big 4-0 b'day in 3 years!)

I was lucky enough to aquire a 1985, and 1992 Vintage Taylor porto, and a 20 year Dow's Tawny Port.  Already drank the '85, wonderful Port.

Added to my Woodlands 04 with 6 bottles of Moss Wood 04 and 6 bottles of Cullen Diana Madeline 05!  Plus a selection of 'drinking' wines including Woodstock 'The Stocks' 04, Craiglee Chardonnay 05 and Shiraz 03.

Colonel - Also got to taste the Amon-Ra and Goldolphin 05's.  Both fantastic but surprisingly the Amon-Ra was almost approachable, unlike the Goldolphin.  Both have immense finishes, which are still lingering.

    Also in this week.

2005 Babcock Cabernet Sauvignon Fianchetto Rainbow Rock
    2004 Jean Faure

I am finding a lot of relative bargains in 2004 Bordeaux, a lot of retailers are unloading them for 20-30% below release price and while the overall vintage is not as good as 2005 or 2003, there are a lot of pretty decent wines to be had at a reasonable price.

    Cheers

I am picking up both the 04 and 05 Clos des Papes CdP for about $62/bottle.  Try Wine Zap or Wine Searcher to find them.

It turns out my UPS delivery guy is into wine - $20 bottles and less. I told him I would help him source some so I did a search for bottles $10 and under with a 85-90 pt. rating - came up with '05 Marquee Chardonnay - 89 pts @ $10 a bottle - I bought some for myself - I'll taste it and if it's good I'll offer some of it to him.

Wrighty thanks for the heads-up on Amon-Ra.
Just after some Tapanappa (JV with Lynch Bages down under - could be interesting).
Also bought some 2000 Cordeillan-Bages, so I can compare with the big brother (in a little while from now).
