I have 23 of the last 36 vintages of Ridge MonteBello and at some point am going to do a crazy vertical (1971 - 2007).

Somehow our four year vertical tasting of Bogle Phantom (2003-2006) doesn't sound nearly as exciting

But it was a fun Friday.

Why does Phantom seem to get such a bad rap?  For the money, I absolutely love this wine.  Down to my last bottle of the '04.  Need to start buying this wine again....  -mJ

Well, face it: it's not Ridge Monte Bello.

I really like it, but on this past Friday's tasting where we did the vertical, it was amazing how different each year was performing. None were bad, just different.

The 2003 was big fruit with a hit of black pepper.

The 2004 wasn't has big, but had some nice earthiness to it.

The 2005 dialled up the fruit again to a nice jamminess.

The 2006 seemed almost thin, as if it were a different wine altogether.

Now have to build up some more vintages.

My 07 Quilceda Creek arrived.
I'm impressed that they must have been watching the local weather and it was in the 50s for two days after varying from the teens to the 70s throughout the month.

Mj,

Not certain either, except that in our case, after drinking the Phantom we both had headaches and my girlfriend had a rash.  She stated that 'some' red wines caused her to break out in a red rash but it rarely happens.  Now I hope this dosen't come off as obnoxious but it only seems to happen to her with the 'lower end' wines.  Is there something they put in these wines that isn't in the higher end wines that would cause this reaction?

Definitely not, but can you really even compare the two?  Totally different wines in my opinion.  The Phantom is mostly petite sirah based if I remember correctly, with some zin and grenache?  Maybe there is some mouvedre in there as well.  The Monte Bello however is cabernet based, with what I am assuming is other Bordeaux wines in the blend.  Merlot probably, some petit verdot, cabernet franc, and malbec maybe?  I have no clue, and of course everything I try to look at via Google is blocked here because of alcohol content.

Anyway, not sure where I was going with that, but don't really get the comparision.

TexasWineGeek:  that is very odd indeed with the rash!  Scary!  I have no idea what migh cause that.  Strange!  -mJ

Although sulfites and tannins are often (mistakenly) given credit for this type of reaction, I read somewhere a few months ago that iron content could be the real culprit. And when it comes to headaches, alcohol is usually the villian

Fingers,

I had forgotten the Iron issue and that does make more sense from a medical perspective.  Alcohol, hell we drink many 15+ % without incident so I really don't think it's the alcohol.  It is a shame because it happened twice with the Bogle and I actually like the wine.  Oh well, who knows.  Fortunately there a hmmmmm, how many other great wines?    I'm betting on the Iron even for the headache.

TWG,

You could tell your girlfriend you read on CT Forum (since you just have) that rubbing her with down with a bit of Sauternes or Icewine really works wonders for a red wine rash.

Of course, it might work more wonders that aren't specifically related to the rash too, if you get my drift...

It has been taken under advisement.   Will Royal Tokaji work?
