Guys trip Telluride 2022.

I feel pretty fortunate to keep tasting this bottle every few months since bottling. It's fattened up and shed some of the acid in the short course of a few months. Tasted side by side once with the OVR, Vine Hill adds a nice dark fruit cassis and a spine of minerality that is beloved by this sites followers. A wine that will benefit from a few more years of bottle aging and even then will most likely be too young for my palate. A very cellar worth bottle that I'm looking forward to following over the next few decades. God willing.

Update. This wine is sourced from blocks 1C & 6A2 Eisele Clone

Keplinger will source blocks 3A & 6A2 for 2019 & 2021

Keplinger in Houston for WW3. Cab line up consisted of 2018 OVR, RBK & VHR Block 6.

Pulled the cork at 10 am to add ox to these young bottles for the 7 pm paired tasting.

My anticipation of this bottling has been two plus years in the works. When walking block 6 with Bruce in July of 19 he mentioned the Keplinger bottling in the works and now I finally had the chance to sample this wine early before release. The only other mention of this wine was from Liteitonfire who had sampled from the barrel on one of his Napa benders. ;-)

Very structured and lifted fruit. This bottle started to come around just about the time we finished it late into the night. I had the fortunate opportunity to taste this wine earlier in the day but in reality it was best right about the time it was gone. Some weight had been gained and tannins had softened ever so slightly. I can easily say my score is influenced by anticipation and love of this vineyard. If you fall into the group of classical Napa cab lover then buy this bottle without hesitation.

Fantastic representation of Oakville by Keplinger! Wow, it's hard to believe this is 2015. PNP with a beautiful balance of fruit and earth. Consumed over two days and it only got better. One of my favorites of the trip.

Tasted along side the following wines in Mountain Village Telluride at 10,000'.

16 Outpost True Vineyard
13 Dakota Shy
12 Odette Reserve
12 Blankiet Rive Droite

PNP- Consumed over a few hours.

This wine is in a great spot to consume. I'm still thinking about the recent Basilisk but this is not far behind as the G in the GSM is front and center. Drink or hold.

Keplinger in Houston for WW3. Cab line up consisted of 2018 OVR, RBK & VHR Block 6.

Pulled the cork at 10 am to add ox to these young bottles for the 7 pm paired tasting. DJ and I also poured a glass left alone at cellar temp and sampled throughout the day.

This bottling will benefit from extended aging then ox at this stage. The glass left in the cellar was more integrated and approachable but still had a wall of tannin and acidity. Concentration of fruit that could benefit from 8+ years of cellaring IMO. This is not a PNP gem. This is going to need more time come together. Next sample in three years. Around 92% CB, 7% CF, 1% PV

At $185 DTC this is a cellar worth wine. 97+

Rob was a very generous host and brought some incredible wines to the table from the 2019 vintage. All wines sourced from Vine Hill Ranch.

Memento Mori

Helen Keplinger's wine is beautiful. Of the wines at the table this was my favorite to drink right now. A friend described this as having elegant power. Fresh, without being overdone, tons of depth with enough acidity to keep things in balance. I totally agree with these notes that never made it onto CT. So I'll write them here!

Splash decant. Nearly opaque intense purplish magenta color. Barbecue brisket and blackberry pie sum this up quite nicely. Smooth, dry, dusty palate. Firm, medium intensity tannins on the medium long+ finish.

This is youthful, but one of the better Syrahs I’ve had recently. 100% Syrah from the Silver Eagle Vineyard.

This one stole the show. Decanted for 3+ hours as we left it until the last bottle. 4 couples all brought non-Cabernets. This was the hands down winner across the board. Admittedly this was after a number of bottles and after reading the previous reviews, it makes me want to open another to verify. Big dark dark fruits hit you all at once with what felt like an underlying white pepper to break the lush fruit from being too fruit forward. Luckily the decanter was nearly empty or I would have chugged my glass to get whatever was left (is that bad or appropriate- who’s to judge).

Will have to open another one soon and verify or edit my assessment.

How in the name of all that’s holy is anyone getting any flavor or semblance of the varietal out of this wine is beyond me. Constricted, astringent, and bitter as the day is long. This needs more time behind bars than Harvey Weinstein.

Give it at least 2-3 years before considering to revisit. This is in the low/mid-80s at best right now if rating. Stop the insanity with all of these adjectives from others that describe anything related to fruit flavor, balance, complexity, or accessibility with this wine. Someone musta slipped me a different bottle or something... Dear lord...

Nose: [58°] Red with a touch of blue fruits along with clean cedar, subtle damp earth and grass, some fresh plum and some sort of forest funk that I'm having a really hard time putting my finger on - something like damp straw or dried shrubs that got wet (not a bad thing.. rather quite intriguing). A soft dusting of graphite and smooth, dulled pebble.

Palate: [58°] The red fruits are darker on the palate, damp bitter earth like black mulch with the broken twigs and a bit of wood chips, pleasant bark skin, softly bitter and savory wet rocks from a dried river as though its water source was just cut off and a light dusting of graphite with a bit of spice on the finish.

Attributes: Dark ruby. Dry with medium-plus amounts of fine but strong and grainy tannin. Medium body with well integrated medium acidity. Good finish of at least 16-18 seconds.

Thoughts: Very interesting, ridiculously smooth and really quaffable straight from the bottle but do give this some time to breathe as it gains depth (or could also be from the small change in temp, ~61° right now). It was literally too smooth and too easy to drink from the pour. With some time though, flavors develop into something deeper and, I hate using this word, complex. Great earthiness with flavors of pleasant and bitter dulled minerals. Another thing to note, this does not have any of the baggage from the '17 vintage.

Other notes: Bordeaux glass. Slow-ox'ed in bottle at cellar temp ~55° for the duration of consumption over 6 hours, recommend decanting at least one hour at cellar temp.

Totally blown away by this bottle. Random cellar pull on a Sunday evening and I'm still thinking about this wine. I'm wishing I had more than one more left in the cellar. ugh!

Beautifully expressive nose with cool lifted blues on the palate. Long silky finish with some great structure to keep going. Time in the bottle has added the perfect amount of weight to this wine.

Damn this was good.

Splash decant. Deep dark intense magenta color. Powdered boysenberry, black plum, river rock, violet, and brown spice. Very dry, gritty palate, with nice, pixelated acidity. Satiny tannins on the longish finish.

This was on of the surprise highlights from my recent trip to Napa. Score might be even higher with a legit decant.

Drank alongside 2017 Vice Versa, 2017 Bevan Vixen and a 2016 Paragon. While all of the wines were quite good, the VHR stood out due to the purity of the fruit. Such a fresh profile, not dominated by heavy fruit but rather a lighter and more refined style. Actually reminded me of a recent 2016 Palmer, with smooth tannins and unbelievable purity. Definitely the WOTN as we paired it with grilled tenderloin. So glad that I was able to obtain several bottles as this will be such a fun wine to track over the coming years as I would expect the wine to improve by a point or two.

Thirty minutes in the glass before tasting. Very deep hazy ruby magenta color. Raspberry, roast beef, mushroom, and brown sugar. Very dry, smooth palate. Firm, lower intensity tannins on the medium finish. 40% Mourvèdre, 34% Grenache, 26% Syrah

This seemed off/reduced. The finish was surprisingly weak and the nose was diminutive. Assuming this is an off bottle and/or low point in this wine’s development.

Full-bodied with blood/iron, black fruits, and a bit of slate. No pepper, which I often get with PS and Syrah.

Smoother than many PS, well integrated, and past the rough stage. Excellent depth and paired perfectly with lamb on the grill. I see no signs of this fading.

Three hour decant. Very deep dark magenta color. Blackberry, boysenberry, bitter chocolate, slate, and Rice Krispies. Dry, satiny, full bodied palate. Firm, full tannins on the long finish.

Youth is the only flaw here. This has terrific structure and mouthfeel. The fruit is intense and voluptuous. My notes don’t do this justice.

Eight hour slow ox, followed by a splash decant. Deep dark magenta color. Strawberry jam, ripe black cherry, and rosemary cracker on the nose. Super smooth, modestly tongue drying palate. Firm, lower intensity tannins on the longish finish.

Not yet released. Only 60 cases made. The only flaw is youth at this stage.

Wow! This is one of my favorite Keplinger Rhones to date. Right in line with 10 Sumo. Silky smooth olive driven dark fruit and lovely, yet interesting aromatics. Spent brass and gun smoke flint minerality. Medium plus in body with a long finish. I'm blown away and left wanting to locate more.

Great window but I think this wine will continue to age well.

Like the Sumo, this wine is already approachable yet will benefit greatly from time in the cellar. This is a wine that will be wonderful to open each year to follow the progress in itself development. Another really well done wine by Helen. 93+

1 hour decant, consumed 70-30 over two days. really tough for me to place my finger on what I was smelling and tasting. maybe some florals, oak spice, red and black fruits. the nose never measured up. it was "loose," just not focused and a little boozy. but that fortunately did not carry to the palate. tasty in the mouth and very enjoyable through the finish. it was good to very good, but overpriced. it should be cleaner and more focused at this price point. if scoring, 88-90. it was better on day 2, so maybe a few years of rest will help. I just feel like there's similar quality elsewhere for half the price.
