Deep bright garnet. Significant nose of black cherry, tart brambleberry, cocoa, a tiny bit of alcohol. The palate is full-bodied, red and black berry and stone fruit, significant tannins. The long finish is tannic enough to pucker. This is a concentrated wine, with enough fruit to compete with those tannins. Overall I think this leans more towards concentrated Chianti than modern blends.

Opened at Veritas, Riesling with an excellent balance of ripeness and delicacy, lots of delicious barely off-dry fruit flavor with no hint of heaviness, everyone thought this was just right.

From memory, decanted 2 hours, lightly tawny full garnet, somewhat shy, flowery reddish nose with a background of leather and old oak, medium-intense palate, darker than the nose, nice full finish. Well-preserved and tasty Barbaresco, not great but quite representative.

This was delicious. I am consistently surprised at how much air these old wines need. Opened at noon, decanted at 6, served at 7:30. Very little sediment and youthfully red, this was a bit tart at first but as the meal progressed it filled with ripe fruit flavors, elegant tannins, and great balance. Tasted just like its constituents, about half-and-half merlot and CS. Great with grilled sirloin steaks.

Bright purple garnet. Archetypical food wine, light, grapey and somewhat tart on its own, lovely and refreshing with (in this case) capicola/fresh mozzarella pizza. A little green and peppery, somewhat like mondeuse.

From memory. Gray pinky salmon. The nose is muted strawberry and yeasty. The palate is lively and leans towards red fruit flavors. The finish is medium and clean. The overall profile is more like a round, fruity Cava, distinctly south of Champagne but modest.

Bright green gold. Relatively fleshy expression of Burgundy, a little extra oak at first, but subdued after about an hour. Tasty and fresh, more savory than mineral or tart. Interesting and enjoyable, while knowing the origin factors into the experience.

At Veritas, probably overstayed its welcome (vintage 2006 indicated), but if you don't mind your Champagne slightly oxidized and barely bubbly (and I don't) then you will enjoy this as we all did. Totally dry but rich, red-fruited and savory, refreshing and vinous, the bubbles mostly showing up in the finish.

From memory. This wine displayed a deep and ripe version of gamay, perhaps still a bit green, but distinctly vinous rather than grapey, with impressive tannins. Definitely a sophistiated wine, enjoyed variously with rack of lamb, hamburgers, and St. Louis ribs.

Often people will describe these wines as a miniature vin jaune, since they are the same grape, and vinification is largely identical, and also many such bottlings are declassified VJ...in any case this wine almost is not miniature, full-blown intense, oxidative, radical acidity offset by deep savory notes. I don’t score wines based on price, but this would be way up there. Perfect with popovered chicken.

Light 14k gold to clear edge, lots of tiny bubbles. Mild nose of freshly peeled apples, the palate is more intense, vinous with ripe white and yellow fruit, and the finish is long and refreshingly tart, and somewhat redder. This is a satisfying and sturdy Champagne, enjoyed with oven-fried chicken.

Decanted 10 hours. Ruby with peachy edge. Pretty nose of fresh flowers, old leather, and bramble. The palate is very light but full-flavored, blackberry, creosote, a little raw beef. The finish is medium-long, and features a smokey tartness. This wine is very much alive, overall much on the light side for Barolo, but one might very well say 'elegant' at this stage.

Second night, Pale gray 14k gold. Nose of light lemon oil, cold wet laundry, melted wax. The palate is ripe but tangy citrus, lemon curd, almost no oxidative taste. The finish is long and tart, increasingly rich; overall vinous rather than fruity. This is I think a very well-made wine, somewhat hard to place, reminding perhaps of an aged, full, rich Chablis. Enjoyed with brussels sprouits bacon pasta.
