2014 Castell'in Villa Chianti Classico

Chianti Classico DOCG Sangiovese more

Do not open this wine before 2022-2024. If you do, I suggest a double-decant and then leaving it at cellar temperature for 24 hours; alternatively, a slow-ox of seven days. I popped and poured it through a gravity aerator and tasted it at hours 1, 2, 3 and 24. Very closed at opening, at hour one it was a pleasant but serious CC; by hours 2 and 3 the tannins and astringency had emerged, as had some of the wine's flavor and structure, but it was "tough"; a solid 90 based on night one. One day later the wine's brilliant character, structure and substance had emerged. It has a deep, clear garnet color; a very good aromatic profile, with lovely cherry aromas and hints of sweetness; and an outstanding flavor profile, with heft, structure, and an intense savoriness, deeply satisfying acidity, and prominent tannins. Drink 2024-2034+.

Dekantert. Lys og frisk Chianti. Røde bær, blomster, lær og lett jordlighet. Lett stil. Snille tanniner. Bra syre. Ypperlig til tomatbasert mat.

Popped and poured. Medium ruby colour. Always dependable when you need a proper “food wine” for a more modest occasion – notes of bright red cherries, cherry pits, roasted almonds and spicy oak on the nose and palate. Medium bodied, smooth and well balanced. As with many CC’s, this too needs a little air to really get going. Drink or hold for another couple of years.

Very smooth, easy drinking. On the nose dark slightly astringent fruit. On the palate, it's light: tannins, acidity and fruit in good balance. A shortish finish.

Fine everyday wine when you want something light and red.

A bit pricey at US$22 though.

Clearly staying on 90 - this is great wine and really good value for money - we had it as our last wine - it was perfect and so well balanced - light - just what we needed after drinking at bit to much earlier - I like this wine.

My first 2014 - but the style is the same - this is light and easy drinking chianti - where you really get good value for money. The fruit is cherry and everything is well balanced - medium acidity and tannins - a simple but still great wine.

Pours clear, mid ruby colour. Straightforward nose of cherries and beef stock. Medium bodied, flavours of cherry, almond, coffee and quince paste. Great QPR.

Medium ruby red colour turning garnet. Medium (+) nose with red cherry, black cherry, blackberry, hazelnuts, leather, forest floor and wet leaves. Medium (+) taste of red cherry, blackberry, wet leaves, leather, mushrooms and hazelnuts. Long and dry finish. Medium (+) acidity. Medium tannins. Medium body. A very good Chianti Classico with a superb balance, distinctively better than the 2014 vintage from the same wine maker when tasted vertically. Drinks well now. Goes well with beef, lamb or mushrooms.

Closed and young, only slightly improving with air. Primary pie cherry with coarse tannins and some astringency at the finish. On par for QPR. I would hold these for a few years in the hope of resolving the tannins.

Blind tasted and lost as to provenance. Oaky, resin nose with blackberries. Orange peel flavors with chalky tannins, alcohol showing and a bitter, dry finish. As the other taster mentioned this needs time...

Blind tasting. Young bloody hue. Nose closed. Mouth supple, non oaked, pure, very fine, with orange juice and chalky tannins. It gives the impression of a wide space for expressive flavours, structured with a balanced acidity-alcohol, carried to a long aerial aftertaste, The WOTN. Superb. But to young: keep.

Dark translucent ruby in the glass; red-fruited, with a slight menthol nuance on the nose.

Sweet & sour cherry, nice persistence on the finish, with a slight bitter note as well. I saw another taster cite blackberries and oak - to be honest, off this bottle it would be hard to imagine we were drinking the same wine? At any rate, this is still young & primary, but I think this has a lot of time in front of it, as well as potential for additional improvement. The only criticism I would have right now is that the wine is not complex, but that may come with age.

Translucent ruby at the core, lightening out to brick on the rim; red fruits on a primary nose.

Much more together than the 2008 I posted about last night, and also clearly made in a riper style, reflective of the vintage. Rich enough to almost come across as a red-fruited liquer; I like this popped & poured wine a lot right now, but would say it's coming across more like a ripe red as opposed to a typical Chianti.

Flaske åpen to dager. Sterke toner av svart trøffel, jordbunn og kirsebær. Myk inngang, god syrestruktur, ganske lang med hint av tannin i avslutning.

This is very light colored, more like a Nerello Mascalese than a Chianti. Nose is red-fruited and pleasant, but not as complex or pronounced as the 2008.

Balanced on the palate, red fruits, nice framing acidity - while the nose isn't as complex on this wine, the palate is reasonably accessible right now.

Very fresh and perfumed red cherry, dusty earth and a distinct note of pine. Nice tension and energy in the mid palate and finish. Delicious now, but there is a sappy core that will come out in time.

Lighter in color than the Montenidoli; candied cherry fruit on the nose.

Nicely balanced on the palate - finish is a little short, but acidity here is also adequate. You don't get the same sour cherry notes that I mentioned in the Montenidoli. My recollection was that 2009 was a pretty hot/ripe year in Chianti - while this is still well-made and drinkable, it doesn't seem to possess the "stuffing" that Castell usually has in a good year.

Hitting what must be it’s peak now. Starting to turn a little brick at the edges.Delicious tart cherry and Tuscan Earth/dust with still significant tannins. This is why I drink Chianti. 93pts

Drinking nicely - all tart red fruit and lively acidity, light- to medium-bodied. Given the vintage, this is a very good Chianti.

Consistently one of my favorite Chiantis from this so-so vintage. You would never guess this was a super hot vintage based on the focus this wine displays on both nose and palate.

A little abbreviated on the finish, but other than that, really a pleasure to drink right now.

The nose here is very similar to the Il Poggiale, but it also possesses an earthy note that is pretty intriguing. Best nose of the trio so far.

This wine is also pretty focused on the palate, with good acidity and nice persistence. To be honest, this wine doesn't even feel like it comes from a hotter vintage. For the vintage, very good.
