2019 Jim Barry Assyrtiko

Clare Valley more

3/9/2024 - tanduybui Likes this wine: 89 points

An enjoyable quaff.

A simple wine that lacks complexity from the wines from Greece but with a 4-year bottle age, it is showing at its best. Some green apple, spice and lime on the nose, it is easy on the palate with notes of peach, citrus and apple. Lovely freshness and a well rounded finish with hints of saltiness and minerals. Wonderful aperitif wine.

Drink now to 3+ years.

Full-bodied, concentrated fruit aroma when opened.
Beautiful texture and well-balanced oak.
Best decantered for a period before drinking.
Drinking beautifully in March 2024.
This wine could not improve with more bottle aging.
The wine looks crimson colored. The legs are slow. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry, toast and black pepper. It tastes like blackberry. The body is full. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity.

Delicious. Big ripe and rich. Behind the big mainly black fruit there a lot of iron earth notes. A robust structure, with good acidity here. Full bodied. Long with some complexity. Beginning to drink now, ideally give it another 5 years.

15 years young, wow Australian Rieslings age so gracefully. Beeswax, lemon zest, nectarine peel, apricot, lime juice, crushed stones and a touch of petrol. The palate is bright juicy and citrus peel driven, with incredibly refreshing acidity, orchard notes, crushed stones characteristics, a layered mid palate leading to a lip smacking yet focused finish. 92++ this is only going to get better in the coming years, shame the wife does not like Rieslings 😢

sealed under glass stopper
These quality stoppers, known as Vino-Lok, eliminate cork taint but look classier than a screwcap. Alcoa, a German company, came up with the idea in the early 2000s.
this appears to be a one off release under the St Clare banner 50th Anniversary Shiraz 2009

Colour inky black impenetrable slight bricking on the rim 15/15
Nose intense secondaries tending to dominant , some plum aromas but generally fruit fading , cigar box cedar , chocolate ,vanilla oak spice and anise, as well as savoury, earthy aromas, including leather, tobacco . definitely better on day 2 26/30
Palate full bodied intense flavours , I was confused on day 1 but this is much better on day 2 , more balanced , more complete the air is letting some fruit flavours come forward 40/44
overall , The wine is opening out and i believe it needs more time , it's 15yo now probably got another 5 years ahead of it 9/11
so 90 points now , will see how it goes over the next day or so , it would be interesting to put this up against the 2009 Armagh

Impressive first up effort - the Barry family should be very proud.

Medium body that radiates purity of fruits and great wine making. Excellent aromas of red and black currant, with notes of spice and earthiness or cedar. The wine seems to have lost its body fat so it is clean and full of life, very vibrant. Tannin is beginning to settle down making it very approachable now but can go a fair way, especially under screw cap.

Drink now to 8+ years. Decanting for 2 hours would be helpful.

Absolutely fabulous!
Still lots of fruit flavours on the palate and no amber edging in the gkass.
Tile red colour, very bright.
Still a few years left with this one.
Magic pairing with grilled Moroccan spiced spatchcock.

Blackberry, plum, leather and hints of tobacco. Nice tannins, a bit closed. Give it enough air and a few more years in the cellar.

A great wine to go with sushi - sheer laser like intensity helps to cut through the oiliness of the fish.

Green-yellow, a somewhat of a restrained bouquet that has a blend of minerals, white flowers and lime. A wonderful linear body that is so beautifully sculpted, precise and it speaks with a clarity that only a great riesling can do. Very long finish and persistent.

Drink now to 10+ years. A grand cru of riesling!

A more full bodied riesling that has weight and depth. Fantastic!

Light by an internal light source, there is an intensity yellow with a tinge of green enveloping the wine, always a good sign! The nose has lovely complexity of some white peach, lemon rind and buttery bread. Body is rich with citrus, yellow melon (unusual for Clare Valley) but has lovely freshness that drives it along. A nice fruited finish. Need to choose fruit wisely.

Drink now to 6+ years.

2018 Jim Barry Assyrtiko

Clare Valley more

5/21/2023 - forceberry wrote: 89 points

The Assyrtiko vines that produce the fruit from this wine are cuttings brought from Argyros, a Santorini producer making some of the greatest Assyrtikos in the world. The vines were planted in 2012 at the Lodge Hill vineyard, Clare Valley. 12.5% alcohol, 3 g/l residual sugar, 6,9 g/l acidity, pH 2,8. Tasted blind.

Still very youthful, palish lime-green color. The nose feels somewhat closed and slightly gaseous with a bit reductive aromas of white currants, some steely mineral tones, a little bit of zesty lemon character, light leesy nuances, a hint of candied primary fruit and a touch of flint smoke. The nose opens up and loses some of that reduction with air, but doesn't clear fully. The wine feels ripe yet very brisk and dry on the palate with a light body and crisp flavors of lemony citrus fruits and tart Granny Smith apple, some gaseous notes of reduction, a little bit of leesy character, light grassy herbal nuances, a hint of fresh white currant and a touch of tangy salinity. The bracing acidity lends remarkable freshness and electric energy to the wine without making it come across as too high-strung. The palate-cleansing finish is crisp, long and acid-driven with a dry aftertaste of Granny Smith apple, some pithy notes of pomelo and lemony citrus fruit, light steely mineral tones, a little bit of leesy character, a hint of tangy salinity and a grassy touch of herby character.

A nice, crisp and very racy wine that is still super-youthful; the wine feels virtually unchanged to the bottle we tasted more than three years ago. However, the wine feels more like a Clare Valley white than an Assyrtiko - just as last time, my guess was a Clare Valley Riesling, and when I was told that it wasn't it, my second guess was Eden Valley Riesling. The style here is much more Australian than Assyrtiko - while a nice wine in its own right, this is still lacking the punch, depth and concentration showed by the best Assyrtikos of Santorini. A nice wine, but really I don't know how long it should be aged before it starts to lose its primary fruit flavors and smoky reductive characteristics. Maybe a bit pricey for the quality at 23,98€.
