1997 Ojai Syrah Roll Ranch Vineyard

Blind at a Rhone Ringers tasting. Sweet dark cherry fruit and pepper are unmistakably syrah and California seems likeliest origins, I even guessed the winery. Beautifully mature and elegant. My WOTN.

Aromatic with scents of raspberries, cherry candy and soy, silky smooth, broad yet disciplined, fires off flavors of plum, cherry, mushroom and bay leaf, great savoury floor, pretty open, expands in the glass with air, tasty

What a great bottle of aged syrah! Still has a ton of garnet without much brown or bricking yet. Great acidity and red fruit remaining suggesting it still has a few years remaining. Yes, it's has lost some of that olive tapanaud or roasted meat on the nose. But the elegance it has picked up makes it worth seeking out.

Fun, fresh, a bit fuller-bodied than your typical rose but there's plenty of acidity to keep it in check. Maybe a touch overpriced.

Still pretty ruby. Baked cinnamon apple, cherry coke and warm dirt nose. Then wild fresh blueberry. Chewy and energetic on entry. Silky Pinot with low acid and low tannins. This is in a nice spot but could see it getting tired soon.

Best. Barbera. A perfect “food wine.” We picked up 2020 release over spring break, look forward to enjoying more of this Barbera.

Clear light red, clear edges and slight browning. Medium nose, funk, pepper, plums and dried mushroom. Aged Northern Rhone flavours and weight and a nice dry resolved finish.

Elegant Northern Rhone style wine.

Tight at first on a pop and pour. After an hour it’s singing. Still ruby. Blue and red fruits, tart on the nose and ripe on the palate. Big jucy strawberries, damp earth, dried leaves, and an interesting tomato consommé texture. Excellent balance and structure. Medium - acid and low/ medium tannin.

This is now in the drinking window, but still needs lots of air, so no pop’n’pour. Medium-bodied with enticing dried cherry notes. Tannins are quite restrained as is nose, but mouth feel more than makes up for it. Don’t see long-term aging, but could see further development and drink ability through at least end of year 2026. This would be wonderful with a full Thanksgiving turkey or ham meal end of 2024.

This is a great example of a New World Barbera. Has typical kirsch/cherry flavors but a little more richness and lower acid than an average Italian Barbera. Tannin is subtle and smooth. Long finish. Very food friendly.

At ten years old, this wine is in my Sweet Spot! Still has black pepper, black fruit and a hint of mint with green olive. You can tell the green in it is starting to fade as these wines do with age, but this is still a phenomenal powerhouse wine. Drink now if you like that type of flavor profile or give it another 3-5 years and it will become more fruit forward.

PnP and it's singing.

Popped the cork on this one too early. Youthful and tannic, this offers rose petals and lavender in the nose and black fruits on the palate. A scratchy finish right now. Give her a long decant. But, better yet, stash her away in the back of the cellar for the next decade. She’ll come together. Drink 2028 to 2035. Worth Seeking Out.

Nicely understated Chardonnay. Crisp, with layers of tropical fruit. Little to no discernible oak. Refreshing and enjoyable.

Eye: Medium yellow verging on light copper in some lights.

Nose: Lightly toasty. Smells of botrytis. Nice light petrol character. Light green apple.

Palate: Beautiful vivacious acidity. Crisp green apple. Orange blossoms. Rich stone fruit. Reasonably sweet; lightly confectionery. Like sweet autumn cider.

Finish: Short. Sweet apple and botrytis.

Enjoyed With: Sweet cheese blintzes
