Oh wow. I haven’t been wowed by a while in a while now. The nose is incredible, love fruit and powerful. The palatte I think is even better. Amazing balance of fruit, fine fine tannins, great acidity and length!

Revisited 2.5 years on.
It hasn’t improved, flattened out a little.
Not much primary fruit left. Dried fruit, leather, earth.
I’m a little less clear on longevity (9 bottles left), will revisit later this year and review.

Hint of struck match. Melon and lime cream on the nose. More citrus and some nectarine on the palate. Possibly lacking a bit in the varietal stakes. More white wine than Chardonnay.

Deep dark red in colour.
A nicely balanced nose of dark fruits, cedar, black raspberry.
The palate is rich, round and full bodied with lovely fine grained tannins.
Drinking well.

1. Appearance
Clarity: Clear
Intensity: Deep
Color: Dark ruby, almost approaching garnet
Core vs. Rim Development: The core is dense and dark, with a slightly lighter rim suggesting some maturity, even in a recent vintage.

2. Nose
Condition: Clean
Intensity: High
Aroma/Bouquet:
Fruit: Blackcurrant, black cherry, and hints of plum
Flower: Subtle floral hints, perhaps violet
Earth: Touches of tobacco and leather
Mineral: Not prominently mineral
Wood: Cedar, with hints of spice box and a touch of vanilla from oak aging

3. Palate
Sweetness: Dry
Acidity: Medium to high – providing a backbone that balances the rich fruit flavors
Tannin: High – robust and well-structured, characteristic of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
Flavor Character:
Fruit: Rich and ripe dark fruits echo the nose, with blackcurrant and cherry being prominent, accompanied by plum
Flower: Floral notes are very subtle, largely overshadowed by the powerful fruit and wood
Earth: Earthy and leathery nuances add complexity and depth
Mineral: A hint of graphite-like minerality adds texture
Wood: Well-integrated oak adds layers of complexity, contributing nuances of dark chocolate and sweet spice

Body/Alcohol: Full-bodied, with alcohol content that supports the rich flavor profile without overpowering

Length: Long, with a persistent finish that leaves lingering notes of fruit, spice, and a hint of earthy minerality
Conclusion

Quality with Respect to Price: Te Mata Cabernet/Merlot Awatea is considered a high-quality wine that offers complexity and depth, typical of the premium wines from the Hawke’s Bay region. It offers good value for its price, especially compared to more famous Cabernet/Merlot blends from around the world.

Maturity with Respect to Ageing: This wine is approachable now but has the structure and complexity to benefit from further aging. It can be cellared for another 5-10 years to allow the tannins to soften and the flavors to integrate more fully.

Food and Wine Pairing: Ideal with robust dishes such as grilled steak, lamb chops, or hearty stews. It can also pair well with rich cheese platters.

Dark reddish purple in color with a moderate watery rim. The nose is quite opulent and lively with rich brambly fruits with lots of cedar and forest undergrowth notes. The palate is quite rich, round, dry, moreish, with a slight watery feel, on the upper end of medium-bodied with some unresolved grippy tannins, and alcoholic heat peaking through at 14%. The flavors of fresh red and purple fruits dominate but nicely integrated with loads of cedar, vanilla cream, tobacco, wet leaves and bramble overtones which makes this quite an interesting Kiwi red blend that may pass for a high-quality young red from the Medoc or perhaps Moulis en Medoc regions. But then again, I need to remind myself that this no less than a second wine from one of New Zealand’s finest red blends, the Coleraine! A lovely treat upon opening with minimal aeration, yes, literally PNP. Very long finish. Will have to revisit tomorrow to see how this evolves. At the moment, it is very well at age 9. From the tasting tonight, I believe that this still has the stuffing to last for at least the midterm, say another 5 - 8 years with proper cellaring of course. Day 2: very aromatic, much softer and very harmonious but less rich and more watery. It’s absolutely delicious tonight with rich cedar and vanilla notes. The aromatics, savory acids and tannins are well integrated. Day 3: On its way down, still drinkable but no where near the level of what it was last night especially in terms of freshness and aromatics. 90 - 93

Took 3 hours to shift a tiny bit, after which it showed lovely balance and fruit. However way too young, so tight. Give at minimum 2028 (15years)

A study in refinement.

A disclosure upfront. If there's any wine I 'grew up with’, it’s Coleraine. Dad did the engineering work on the 1890s stables that were converted into the original winery (now a barrel hall within a more modern structure). He also did the owner's house that adorns the Coleraine label. Dad said engineering the ‘phallic’ chimneys was the hardest challenge he faced. The home so-named Coleraine vineyard was the base for the wine, until it became a cuvee of the best fruit in the Bay. All that aside, I am confident this note is as objective as one can strive for.

Stunning colour for a near 20 year old. Dark purples/crimsons, a crimson rim with only a tinge of brick.

If a bouquet can seem smooth, then the aroma achieves that quality. Immensely perfumed. Black currant, blueberry even, a mellow woodsy/autumnal and cedary streak. Darker olive and graphite things lurk here too. Deep aromas.

Likewise, a deep-seated medium palate. Beautifully balanced, depth (did I mention it's deep?) and suppleness, both fine and firm, medium bodied and suave, with just the right touch of grip. Still fresh. Elegant line and length.

At its mid-point, at most for mine. We need to wait for it's tertiary years, whenever they might fall, for more complexity to come. For now, a very satisfying 'Claret'.

An easy 10-20 years beckon. Coleraine on a cruise. Provided the cork doesn't falter or fail. Why? Why do they persist with the anachronistic voodoo of the cork?

Drinking perfectly right now I would say. Not sure I would keep it *that* much longer… Fruit and tannins nicely balanced. Very versatile with food - we had it with baked aubergine and harissa but imagine it would work well with meat too.

Good vibrant young looking red.
Big ripe wild berry, blue berry & raspberry nose with a hint of spearmint, inviting.
Great full round palate, not heavy at all, has a nice feel, elegante. Probably at peak.
