2016 Caiarossa Caiarossa Toscana IGT

SuperTuscan Blend more

Big wine from the start. Green Cabernet Franc notes on the edges give way to ultra ripe blackberry/black cherry, cassis and anise. Other than the green pepper there is not a ton of interest here and actually feels too far into maturity. Nonetheless a very tasty modern wine. Blind would have guessed high end Chile.

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend more

Yes, it needs airing out and the right food combo; but it’s reallly a dark, concentrated Bordeaux Red! 2008 was a sleeper vintage for Pessac-Leognan; and it show in this wine. Black currant/Cabernet aromas with leafy and mild veg. Oak really laced in well. Medium bodied and with an uncommon richness for the vintage. Tannnins are a bit abrupt; but this may resolve itself with time. For now; have foods that counteract tannins. JUST starting it’s drinkability window.

2008 Dom Pérignon Champagne

Ok, last time i was being nice. This time, I will dare say, To me, this Champagne is more hype than anything mind blowing. Yesterday afternoon, this was totally outclassed by a Comtes de Champagne 2006 drank side by side. At the end, the Comtes was dust and there was a 3/4 of a bottle of Dom left between 3 experienced drinkers (me, not being one of them), and we unanimously agreed that while this and the CdC are only 2 years apart and age was not a factor, the cdc kept pulling away. In comparison, this was far more energetic with much acidity and finer bubbles, but shot its load within 75 minutes and totally lost steam. I am not a fan of 2008 Dom, and won't buy any more, but always happy to drink yours! I still own a few, but will hold this and see what happens. HOLD

One hour decant; which it needed. Lots of sediment. The 2008 left banks are indeed approaching their drinkability window. Very classic, Pomerol style. Lots and lots of Ferrous/Iron terroir on this wine. Mild red cherish aromas too and touches of sandalwood. Medium bodied with adequate depth of Red Fruits on the palate. Tannins are very much in check. Earthy/Terroir finish. I’m pretty much in agreement with Jane Anson (Decanter) on this wine. Drink now; but won’t be going downhill either. Would rate a bit higher if a bit more concentrated and perhaps some more darker fruits were there too.

2007 Château Mouton Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

Anniversary dinner at home during Covid lockdown. Decanted for about 20 min and then drank over the next 1.5h. Don’t agree with the recent poor ratings, this is a really wonderful Pauillac in almost perfect harmony. A bit shy on the nose with wood spices and dark fruit, but then a truly beautiful medium bodied palate with loads of pencil lead, fine dark fruit and fine to medium tannins. Very good length too.
Perhaps my only concern here is how accessible and open this is already today. I recall drinking the 2002 Mouton around the same age, another “mediocre” (but obviously more tannic) vintage, and the 2002 then seemed to be hiding further upside, while the 2007 seems genuinely a point today. No problem keeping for another 5-10 years but just can’t see this getting better.

PS: Have not tried the other 07 First Growth but find this just a touch better than the also excellent, and in the context of 07, well rated La Mission

This Mouton is now at it’s apogee. Showing some garnet hues; undoubtedly due to the 2007 Vintage and onslaught of rain affecting the berries. Still, remarkably dark color for a 2007. I do not share the prior “full bodied” comments; rather it’s more of an elegant, “medium bodied” claret. It does not have the punch of riper; more Mouton exotic vintages. Yet; the finesse and aromatics are fun. This splendid; classic style with it’s lower alcohol; will be marvelously paired with a Filet Mignon or a roasted chicken with parsnips. These 2007 Bordeaux’s are showing a short life; and yes more leafy/herbaceous tones from a cooler; rain/botrytised challenged vintage. After tasting many 2007’s, it’s a vintage to drink now than to hold.

11/22/2020 7:45:00 AM - It was a James Suckling and Wine Spectator review. Most comments were correct with medium bodied. Being concentrated is also a dubious comment for 2007 Bordeaux’s. Elegance and drinkability yes.

2004 Château Latour Grand Vin

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

My second encounter with this amazing ready to drink, the best of the first growth chateaux.

This bottle was flown half way round the world and left to acclimatize for 2 days before the dinner. We fully decanted it for about an hour and a half.

The aromatics is distinctly Latour. Powerful cassis, smoke, gunpowder, fresh mineral, forest floor, mushroom, and a little tea leaf as well.

Full of structure but already round enough with no harshness. A little lightweight than the bottle I previously had at the chateau. Distinct creme de cassis, blackberry, fresh black fruit type profile. Lots of smoky flavor, new leather, truffle, slightly minty. Gravelly. Last very long. Extremely enjoyable.

This is not a complete Latour experience like I used to but it may be down to the bottle variation. But what it does is to confirm that the 2004 Latour is ready for business, unlike the 2008 I tasted not too long ago that will need 5-10 more years to come out of its shell. This will hold and get better still, although if you want to pop one tonight for a special occasion like we did, you will be rewarded handsomely. 93+

Heavy aromas of cassis and cherry liqeur, complex but primary. A big, bold, concentrated young wine that should not be touched for decades (?). Great in 20 years? 93-94p
