Flowers, dark cherries, plums, chocolate, and licorice create the perfume. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, vibrant, silky, and packed with ripe, polished, red fruits, chalky tannins, a red plum, and an espresso finish. This is the last vintage for Justin Onclin as the owner. The estate was sold the following year. Drink from 2023-2042.

The 55 Villemaurine has remained characterful and fresh all these years. If not terribly complex, it shows an appealing, predominantly black fruit and carob nose, accented by an old leather note. A great example of the staying power of well-kept bottles from modest estates in great vintages.

Excellent. Bright cherry notes and some forest floor. Good fruit. Went great with pepperoni pizza, caprese salad, and pasta with tomato sauce.

Lots of plum and earth on first opening. Quickly it opens up with higher toned blackberry and leafy notes, with some nice spice. Pleased with this and ready for drinking with a nice ribeye.

Medium-bodied, forward, fresh, early drinking, soft-textured, charmer focused on its straight-forward core of red fruits. You can enjoy this on release. 86-88

Brooding red fruit, meaty and underbrush hints on the nose, not much wood here, very savoury, good acidity, soft tannins, classic dry finish. Very smooth and easy-drinking wine with good cellaring potential. I definitely need to buy a few more.

Recent risky purchase of a re-coked wine, but wanted to be able to experience an older St Emilion wine at an affordable price. I knew not to expect much, but pleasantly surprised. Light orange burnt tint rimmed the outer glass. Little aroma, but after 1hr of being open, surprisingly the wine tasted lively with very mild red fruit with a lot of leather. Thin, but fairly long one dimensional finish.Thought there might be more earth flavors, but if actually complemented some aged gouda and other hard cheeses.

A glorious light orange brick colour. Med+ pronounced nose ofvanilla, stewed plums with lashings of trertiary flavours: earthy, leather, tobacco, meaty. Really full body, low but very fine tannin, high pH, beautifully balanced with a length still driven by flavour rather than acid. A bit of a treat.

A friend gave me this which he bought from a wine merchant in London. Not sure I would ever buy something this old from a producer I have never heard of. Immaculate bottle, label and no evaporation suggest it was stored in the barrel for years and then bottled. I have to say it didn't taste as old as I thought it would be but it's still past whatever best it had. Drank alongside two younger St Emillion wines which had all the depth and body you would expect so this didn't help the wine but it did taste thin and lacking in fruit in comparison. I drank it over two night which was mistake - at this age you want to drink in one siitting. If you got it - drink it - and soon..

Attractive Bordeaux for a reasonable price. Dark in the glass. Limited nose. The palate gives very nice fruit, with a touch of earth. Smooth, fresh with a nice gently tannic finish. Best after a 30-60 minute decant. Relatively young in its drinking window but no need to wait.

Great Bordeaux nose! On palate overcompensates to surprisingly vibrant strawberry and cherry. Good acid and also tannins. Doesn't drink like a 52 yr old!
Story is winey has changed ownership several times since 1967. A barrel of this was found with old bottles. Bottles were cleaned up and filled. Then new corks were installed. There was no encroachment of wine up the cork supporting this.

This bottle was a very cool experience. I’ve never had anything like it. There was a hint of vinegar on the nose but the wine wasn’t off. It had some very unique flavors and a little acidity. Glad I got two.

OWC, and doesn't appear to have been recorked, allegedly directly from the estate. This experience was different than the previous bottle. A well preserved St.-Emilion that defies its 50+ years in the bottle. Fleshy plum and red fruits, vanilla, toast, underbrush and smoke. Just a faint hint of the butterscotch that dominated the last bottle. Decently viscous with resolved tannins. Unfortunately, this batch may have been different from the previous one.

Ah, yes.

Nose is pure butterscotch and/or caramel, possibly vanilla bean. Perfumed with a bit of underbrush. On the palate, plums, red currants, raspberries and vanilla. Very bright and long. Still some grip. Nice warmth.

This is an incredible experience, a close family member just eased the (broken) cork out of this bottle. Expecting crap, is a revelation.

High acid, full fruit, very soft tannins. Ruby red, slight brick around the edge, tasting real good and does not seem to be deteriorating.

All this at 11.5% !!

Hour and a half later, still giving pleasure. Still highly aeromatic, pumping out of the glass. Flavors linger, like five minutes between sips. Quite an experience, blessed.

Initially very restrained with a very youthful quality (really tight and very meaty). The fruit is muted, with bacon fat, roasted plum, boisenberry and dark chocolate on the nose. The tannins are very aggressive and it starts to take on a sour cherry component with more time in the glass. I'm not convinced this will get better with time.

Very nice example of it's type.
Has some deposit so would advise decanting.
The Cherry-red colour is clean and dark.
Aromas of small red and black fruits of the forest.
After 5 years it is an easy-drinking wine with soft, silky, well-balanced tannins.
It's a Grand Cru so the Chateau Villemaurine is listed in the 1996 Classification of Saint-Emilion, it has a Silver in France 2013 Medaille d'Argent in the Challenge International du Vin.

Did not go well with Smoked Chicken it just killed it, The wine came back to life when we started eating bread and cheese, hard boiled egg etc., fortunately I did try the wine before eating the Smoked Chicken so kept with it. The cheese was Brie and Comte.

70% merlot, 30% cab franc. The cab franc comes through heavy on the nose with wild sage, garrigue, and rosemarry predominance and whiffs of blueberries coming through. Medium body with very brief sweet blueberry notes up front before the herbaceous notes take over, carrying through to the mid-palate. Drying but soft tannins on the finish. Very earthy, herbaceous bordeaux dominated more by the cab franc with the merlot offering body and faint fruit. Drinking fairly well now without need for a long decant, but has enough acidity and tannins to last a few more years.
