Bottle 1398g. Honah Lee Vineyard. Moderately intense aromas, redder fruit than I expected, tart skin, sweet spice, lactic. Dry, with moderate fresh acidity, elevated finely gritty but somehow sticky tannins, medium-bodied, 13% abv. Darker fruit on the palate, with a little bitterness and some of the espresso character I've found in Shaps' Petit Verdot in the past.

Bottle a hefty 1396g. Moderately intense aromas of ripe plummy fruit, some sweet spice and earth. Smells smooth. Dry, with moderate fresh acidity and moderate grainy tannins, medium-bodied but concentrated, 12.9% abv. Darker fruit on the palate, persisting through a long finish that wraps up with just a little bitterness. Well-made and appealing.

Had higher expectations for this wine as I was led to believe that this is one of the better wineries in the region. But we found this to be unremarkable. It looked great in the glass but that was where it ended. Maybe the vines were young but besides being relatively balanced, it was boring and without character. We thought it had a tartness to the finish which was not pleasant. It aged another year after purchase in our cellar but I don’t believe any further aging will help this one. While not too expensive, I do not believe it to be a value for $30 we paid.

2019 Michael Shaps Tannat Honah Lee Vineyard

Another very good wine from Michael Shaps. The Tannat is a little bit of a brute at this stage, but that's not very suprising if you have had a few Madirans under age 20 or so. Still very nice aromatics of tobacco leaf, cedar wood, some sweet spices, also some cigar box, dark
cherries and some smoke and black plums. It‘s full-bodied, dense and structured, it has high acidity and high tannin that is very good quality though. Long finish. A fascinating Tannat that.is combining Madiran structure and almost black color with Virginia extra layers of fruit.

Deep purple color. Notes of dark cherries, some dark plum, some brighter fruit too, tobacco leaf, sweet spices, some vanilla, also some herbal/flowery notes and smoke, maybe also some black tea. It's pretty full-bodied, with medium-high tannin that is very good quality, also some pretty high acidity providing freshness. Long finish. An excellent wine that will probably age nicely for the next 10 years or so and a testament to what this grape is able of in VA. Always one of the highlight in the range of this producer.

This is really singing. Explosive notes of red cherries, some strawberries, but also some darker berries, sweet spices and just a touch of herbal notes. It's medium-full bodied, with medium-high acidity and just some lower-medium tannin. Good length. A super fresh CF from this excellent producer. Everything is about freshness and tension here. Really lovely.

A nice style. Mushroom and dark fruit, even tempered mid palate with the fruit winning out on the smooth finish. An excellent example of CF at a very pleasing price.

Deep purple - pronounced nose of oak, baking spices, vanilla, dark fruit, sage, rosemary, cedar, wild mushroom. Bold tannins and above average acid. Full body with a velvety mouthfeel. Solids have begun dropping out of suspension. Wish I had another to try in 5 to 10 years. I'm not sure it can get any better than it is now, but it has a long way to go before it declines. The grapes benefitted from a nearly ideal growing season and excellent terroir of the Honnah Lee vineyards at about 1,000' elevation in Virginia's Piedmont. One of 12 wines selected for the Governor's case in the 2019 Virginla Governor's Cup competition.

PNP. Very expressive aroma... full on fruit led by canned black cherry and fig with roasted mushroom. Pretty vibrant. M+ body and mouthfeel. Extra herbal notes of sage. Finish M++ with the fig and mushroom at the fore. In a happy place and worthy QPR.

Bottle an excessive 1411g. Aromas of moderate to elevated intensity, the vanilla and sweet spice of oak more prominent than I remember from earlier vintages. Dry, with elevated fresh acidity—unusual for Virginia Chardonnay—medium-bodied, 13% abv. Not as "Burgundian" as in the past thanks to the oak, but still fresher and more in balance than many American Chardonnays.

This may be the way forward with varietal Cabernet Franc, at least here in Virginia. A food friendly and eminently quaffable red that is also refined.

Brilliant, translucent ruby in an energetic, highly aromatic, and fruit forward approach. Kinship leans to Loire, not Bordeaux. The high-toned fruit speaks in cranberry and raspberry with a vernal floral note -- and without the green vegetal element that used to be the norm here in Virginia and elsewhere for Cab Franc. Enough tannin for a pleasant mouthfeel but without an emphasis on cellaring.

I bought a bottle as a curiosity and wound up with a really delicious bottle of wine. A whiff of reduction on the nose opens up to some creamy citrus fruits, not too dissimilar from a good chardonnay. There's a little richness/sweetness on the palate which would probably make it very good with richer seafood dishes.
