Delicious sweet and simultaneously “damp” nose of Gevrey complexity with tree moss, sous bois, leather, a fleck of bacon fat, truffle/mushroom with a deep sweetness in the form of caramel and red fruit remnants. This has a sultry/ripe character to it that really charms the nose and palate. Boxes above the Gevrey Villages quality with good pampering richness on the initial attack. From G. Vachet.

On decanting from 375ml bottle, this seemed oxidized to the point that I pulled a backup wine; 2 hours later this was singing; good underlying tertiary red cherry, sous bois and autumnal notes. Tasting partner called it “shockingly good”. Very much in line with Xavier94’s note from a few months back.

(Newman) smoked beet root with dusty autumn leaves, whispy orange fruit remnants with onion compote, leather and shoe polish notes and damp soil notes throughout the nose and palate. This is so tender, resolved and shows a great combination of savory vs. sweetness. Juicy and pliant in the mouth with fine tannin. An intriguinig note of peat and smoke character dominate today. I was looking back on my previous note and my note of "peat" holds true! A few hours into the tasting, after nursing this one, the fruit turns exotic with an almost orange liqueur/grand marnier tropical note- amazing stuff.

(Andre Coquard) tasted from 375ml- Notably orange/tawny in appearance at first and showing some very whispy aromas of hickory smoke, brown sugar, clove and autumn leaf with a certain singed/burnt orange flavor on the palate. With just a bit of air time, this really blossoms, adds dimension and shows an almost tropical orange/exotic character to the fruit along side a lilting sweetness. Classic Chambolle delicacy and fine tannins. 93+ Delicious.

1971 Alexis Lichine Beaune 1er Cru Avaux

Pinot Noir more

4/29/2023 - jmoore431 Likes this wine: 92 points

I’ve posted the only note on the Avaux previously; this bottle was labeled Beaune 1er with no further specifics. It was impossible to tell who actually made and bottled the wine as the very bottom of the main label had an additional Bass Charrington label covering any producer’s identity. Additionally, this was a Hospices de Beaune “Cuvée Guigone de Salins” wine. Odd coincidence was that the ‘06 Bouchard Corton Charlie we began the tasting with was also a Hospices Salins wine.
Very clear, cherry cola color; bright cherry fruit, beetroot and celery salt nuances; completely tertiary, very soft and gentle wine. 92+

I’ve enjoyed many half bottles of this and it’s remarkably consistent. Solid bricky color; beautiful aged fruit. Excellent and held up for several hours. Produced by G Vachet.

Opened an hour or so before drinking. Did not decant. Cork came out in 1 piece- soaked nearly through
Red fruit (raspberry, cherry), soy sauce, spice, earth, slight floral. Good acidity. Fruit a bit dissipated. Seems on the downward slope. But still really enjoyable.

Like so many Alexis Lichine bottling from this era, this is picture-perfect burgundy with strawberry and orange fruit remnants with a lilting autumn leaf/hickory smoke that takes you to the damp woods immediately! A touch of brown sugar and regrettably an oxidative note that comes out a bit too strong to give this a fair chance. The style and maturity are in the zone right now, though! So haunting and compelling for this level! 92 points for assuming a less-oxidative profile.

Not at all characteristic of several other bottles I’ve had of this (all 375 ml splits, like this one). Perhaps I overreacted to an initial highly oxidative nose I originally got, But that seemed to blow off considerably to reveal a pretty decent little wine beneath. Tasting partner liked it much better, will try another bottle soon to see if this was just the odd bottle (half bottle really).

This showed the dried fruit/sultry quality of the vintage with hints of fig with an orange liqueur top note that shows lush, soft flavors in the mouth with balanced tannin. This is a notably resolved Clos Vougeot that shows impressive ripeness without the austere tannins one might expect. Good acidity freshness still. In a great zone! 94.

My last bottle of this, it didn’t show quite as well as the one killed in December 2020. Dried red fruit, ripe old red burgundy, soil-inflected. A nice finish to a Clos Vougeot tasting. Producer: Jean Meo

Better than expected for half bottle format of a village wine from an unheralded vintage. We opened two bottles which showed similarly. Color is amber-tinged ruby and the nose shows mostly cherry and sous-bois notes. Light to medium-bodied, with some baking spice to go with the core of red fruits. A nice surprise. The label indicates that Louis Trapet is the proprietère.

Even though this was a low fill and had to be decanted through a coffee filter at the end, this was one of those rare magic bottles of Burgundy where note after note of complex flavors and aromas file on one another for 30 minutes to an hour. I've been running a wine group for my employees for the past year and a half, and this was the first truly magic bottle they had experienced. Leather, mushrooms, cherry, smoke, freshly raked leaves, damp earth, fireplace ash--I could go on. An amazing wine. I have one left. Fingers crossed.

1969 Alexis Lichine Beaune 1er Cru Epenottes

Pinot Noir more

8/23/2021 - Xavier94 Likes this wine: 97 points

(From a 375ml; Jacques Parent) It is encouraging, sometimes, to experience a miracle of a wine so good from an Appellation that often takes the back seat to so many other prestigious communes, mostly from the Cote de Nuits. I have made several comments in recent tasting notes characterizing the ‘69 Cote de Beaune reds as being impressively “big” but with a sense of soupy/chocolate heaviness with broad-stroke tannins that can come across as rustic.

This wine is quite the opposite. It has one of the most intense, articulated, kaleidoscopic noses I have experienced this year; whispy, haunting and constantly unfolding. Rhubarb/orange type citrus fruit with coffee, caramel that, in this case, add a sweetness to the beetroot/sous bois layering mixed with minerals, leather and smoke. Long, juicy with resolved tannic structure. Cognac-like in the best way possible. Truly a Grand Vin!

Thank you, Joe.

This was not an “Avaux” but was labeled “Beaune Epenottes” and made by Jacques Parent. Half bottle. Pale garnet with substantial clear rim; effusive nose of aged graceful old burgundy; beetroot, sous bois, “autumn in a glass”; orange peel in the upper register; classy, delicate and ethereal.

(Domaine Alexis Lichine & Robert Newman) a brown almost tawny color out of the bottle; a very smoke/peaty nose of fine leather, antique wood, fernet branca-type minty herbal spice complexity with brown sugar dustings and dark chocolate. An orange top note begins to take centerstage, with hickory smoke, bacon/cured meats and a whiff of onion jam, all of which are whispy and properly integrated.as the wine sits in the glass and, in fact, the wine itself shows some oxidation immediately out of the bottle and then comes into focus with air time, even on DAY 2!!! Incredible stuff. Lots of style

I was concerned how this would show at the end of a Chambolle tasting, following a dozen other wines. But it showed wonderfully, no worse than second fave among the four of us. Notes of peat, leather, onion compote, savory smoked meats and bacon fat; with that upper register of blood orange. CT tells me I have one more, but no rush.
