5/1/2023 - misterstarre Likes this wine: 96 pointsBeautiful dark red color with no visual sign of age. Tight nose with ripe plum and light wood, like popsicle stick. When you taste this, it's hard to believe that it's almost 56 years old. The fruit is mature, but not madeirized, mostly plum with a little cooked strawberry. But what's striking, other than the ample volume on the fruit, is the freshness and stiffness of the tannins. By no means harsh, but nothing close to resolved, This had the structure and mouthfeel of a 15 to 20 year old wine. This thing will quite literally reach 100 with plenty left in the tank. It's immortal. As it got air, we teased rose petal, orange oil, and fennel out of this, and plenty of leather too. Superb. Pretty. Youthful. Excellent. (From Magnum). |

Also a truly great wine and honestly if not for the stunning style of the ‘58 this could easily be a WOTN in most company. The biggest difference is the impression of depth they each give. The 58 feels like it’s layers upon layers where here I feel like I can see to the bottom. Still bright and lovely and still with the fruits and spices but just a bit less evolution as drinking. Great wine though. |

It’s spice and fruit and vibrant and bright and really surprising to think that this has 60+ years of life because it is going very strongly. Really drinking great. Don’t get confused by the label. They always said Cannubi but it is the same blend that Bartolo Mascarello has always done. Just used Cannubi since that was the most famous of the vineyards but this is still a blend. Ironically some of that Cannubi parcel was a trade from some mediocre vineyards in Barolo proper where a farmer wanted to consolidate his holdings and so gave a 1 for 1 trade of acreage. |

It was getting towards the end of the night and this was right next to the 58 which absolutely bowled me over and so this got a bit less focus. It’s a good wine per my notes but not at the level of the ‘55 or ‘58 |

2/3/2023 - Robmcl920 Likes this wine: 94 pointsThe '64 is a beautiful Barolo, and features the sweetness of red fruit and red floral tones I associate with old Mascarello, but shows a bit more meatiness and earthiness than the 1958 and 1955 beside it. On the nose, I found smoke, dark red fruit, raw meat, sweet spices, and dried roses. On the palate, the wine retains a good intensity, coming across in texture somewhere in between the powerhouse 1958 and the very finessed 1955, with sweet, pure red dried fruits, roses, smoked meats, earth, and spices, with smoke and spice notes lingering on the finish. |

On the decant, there was almost no sediment suspended because it had all precipitated out into very large chunks. The fruit here is crystalline and clear, with distinct tart red fruit aromas and flavours. It's such a thrill to open an old wine and experience something like this. |
