Pale brick red. First very closed after one hour opening up. Complex truffle mushroom and dried fruits. But probably not the best bottle I had. Medium to full bodied with pronounced acidity and very good length

From a perfect looking magnum, this wine had a deep red center and orange/clear rims. The nose didn’t show much for a couple hours but the it displayed medium intensity notes of sour cherries, red dust soil, raspberries, and a hint of tobacco.

In the mouth, this wine was rather light at first but developed beautifully in the glass. After 5 hours of air, It had light “powdery” tannins, crisp acidity, luscious fruit, and great, sneaky length.

This wine was in the zone! Arguably 97 points.

Whow!
Völlig intakter Kork.
Sehr transparente Farbe, Rostbraun mit orangefarbenen Reflexen aber sehr transparent/wässriger Eindruck. Ein Hauch an Farbe.
Die Nase ist eindeutig Nebbiolo, getrocknete Rosenblätter, Weichsel, Unterholz, Trüffel - aber auch ein Hauch an Marsala, Rosinen.
Am Gaumen natürlich keine Macht aber nach wie vor gute Frucht, völlig eingebundene Tannine, tolle Balance, absolut grossartige, seidige Textur.
Ein Traum, Altwein vom Feinsten und ein tolles Erlebnis.

Bottle was in immaculate shape....1 previous owner who had bought this in Rochester at Century.
Perfumed nose, still so alive. Blends the pretty red fruits with savoury elements, flowers and spice. Finish for days....got better with time in the decanter (small decanter...just for sediment but unlike some...I think that old Nebbiolo needs air).

Beautiful dark red color with no visual sign of age. Tight nose with ripe plum and light wood, like popsicle stick. When you taste this, it's hard to believe that it's almost 56 years old. The fruit is mature, but not madeirized, mostly plum with a little cooked strawberry. But what's striking, other than the ample volume on the fruit, is the freshness and stiffness of the tannins. By no means harsh, but nothing close to resolved, This had the structure and mouthfeel of a 15 to 20 year old wine. This thing will quite literally reach 100 with plenty left in the tank. It's immortal. As it got air, we teased rose petal, orange oil, and fennel out of this, and plenty of leather too. Superb. Pretty. Youthful. Excellent. (From Magnum).

La Festa del Barolo: Rare Wine Dinner - Bartolo Mascarello (Legacy Records): From a magnum. Also a truly great wine and honestly if not for the stunning style of the ‘58 this could easily be a WOTN in most company. The biggest difference is the impression of depth they each give. The 58 feels like it’s layers upon layers where here I feel like I can see to the bottom. Still bright and lovely and still with the fruits and spices but just a bit less evolution as drinking. Great wine though.

La Festa del Barolo: Rare Wine Dinner - Bartolo Mascarello (Legacy Records): From a magnum. This was just unbelievable stunning. It’s spice and fruit and vibrant and bright and really surprising to think that this has 60+ years of life because it is going very strongly. Really drinking great. Don’t get confused by the label. They always said Cannubi but it is the same blend that Bartolo Mascarello has always done. Just used Cannubi since that was the most famous of the vineyards but this is still a blend. Ironically some of that Cannubi parcel was a trade from some mediocre vineyards in Barolo proper where a farmer wanted to consolidate his holdings and so gave a 1 for 1 trade of acreage.

It was getting towards the end of the night and this was right next to the 58 which absolutely bowled me over and so this got a bit less focus. It’s a good wine per my notes but not at the level of the ‘55 or ‘58

The '58 is an incredibly beautiful wine, and somehow, it remains a powerhouse at over 60 years of age. Of a trio of older vintages ('55, '58, '64), this came across to me as the cleanest wine and clearly the most powerful.

The nose is intensely perfumed with sweet fresh red roses, fresh mint, dried red cherry fruits, roasted meats, and spices. On the palate, it is medium bodied with a feeling of intensity and power that is shocking in a wine of its age. The power of the wine is balanced by the sweetness of the fruit and floral tones, and the lively acidity, which here is in ideal proportion to the weight of the remaining fruit, whereas in the other older vintages, I found the acidity to stand out a bit more than ideal. Mint, fresh roses, dried red cherry, and earth flow across the palate, ending in a resounding and long finish.

The '64 is a beautiful Barolo, and features the sweetness of red fruit and red floral tones I associate with old Mascarello, but shows a bit more meatiness and earthiness than the 1958 and 1955 beside it. On the nose, I found smoke, dark red fruit, raw meat, sweet spices, and dried roses. On the palate, the wine retains a good intensity, coming across in texture somewhere in between the powerhouse 1958 and the very finessed 1955, with sweet, pure red dried fruits, roses, smoked meats, earth, and spices, with smoke and spice notes lingering on the finish.

This showed similarly to my note from 2020. I like the '64, but it has a bit of excess of earth / meat notes that I think are distracting from the underlying fruit and floral tones that I want to taste.

The ‘55 was everything I could have hoped for. This vintage stood out for its finesse, aromatic intensity, and sweetness, whereas the surrounding vintages of 1958 and 1964 were more about power.

On the nose, the wine is intensely perfumed with incredibly sweet red fruit and red floral tones, smoke, earth, and spices. On the palate, the wine is so elegant and sweet, while retaining an impressive level of density of fruit and a lively acidity level. Sweet, smoky red fruit, dried roses, and earth flow across the palate, but again, rather than about the specific flavor profiles, it’s all about the feeling of sweetness and sensuality of this wine. A true treat to taste. The sweetness and flavor profile here remind me of the 1970.

Flickinger Tasting at The Casino (Chicago, IL): From magnum. I wish I was able to spend some time with a glass of this. Glorious aged nebbiolo in the best of ways. Fully mature, with plenty of pure red fruit still on the nose and palate. Resolved, silky tannins, this is really the reason we age Barolo. So lucky to have crossed paths with a sound magnum of this!

Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VII (Chicago, IL): Lots of bottle variation in this wine, I'm told. This one was absolutely stunning. On the decant, there was almost no sediment suspended because it had all precipitated out into very large chunks. The nose from the get-go was extraordinary, fresher than many 70s and 80s nebbiolos, and showing a distinct perfume note. The fruit here is crystalline and clear, with distinct tart red fruit aromas and flavours. It's such a thrill to open an old wine and experience something like this.
