Roasted BBQ meats, black fruit and boot polish on the nose. More fragrant and elegant on the palate with quite pronounced acidity. Very complex. Delicious wine, more brooding and masculine than the silky 71 alongside.

A bit high in acidity although quite elegant and complex on the finish. Jamie Ritchie who brought this said it wasn't a great bottle of it. At Penavic wine dinner atop 15 Hudson Yards.

The 1978 Cantina Mascarello Barolo is showing beautifully, blossoming with extended aeration to reveal a deep-pitched bouquet of black cherries, strawberries, grilled meats, dried herbs, licorice and anise. Full-bodied, muscular and layered, it's multidimensional and complete, with a super-concentrated core, rich and powdery tannins and racy acids. Long and penetrating, this is a fabulous wine that's still virile and tightly wound, and well-stored bottles have a long life ahead of them.

Wines for the Acker Merrall Bicentennial Auction (The Pool - New York NY): Walk around tasting. Bright red cherry, surprisingly fresh for its age with licorice and floral notes in the near background, plus earth just slightly further back. Enough of everything in wonderful proportion with wonderful balance and good enough weight.

La Festa del Barolo: Rare Wine Dinner - Bartolo Mascarello (Legacy Records): Madeirized in style. It’s got that oxidation and a bit of a sherry-like bit to it. Some old leather. It’s interesting but not as compelling as some others.
