The ‘55 was everything I could have hoped for. This vintage stood out for its finesse, aromatic intensity, and sweetness, whereas the surrounding vintages of 1958 and 1964 were more about power.
On the nose, the wine is intensely perfumed with incredibly sweet red fruit and red floral tones, smoke, earth, and spices. On the palate, the wine is so elegant and sweet, while retaining an impressive level of density of fruit and a lively acidity level. Sweet, smoky red fruit, dried roses, and earth flow across the palate, but again, rather than about the specific flavor profiles, it’s all about the feeling of sweetness and sensuality of this wine. A true treat to taste. The sweetness and flavor profile here remind me of the 1970.

Bartolo & Giulio Mascarello: 1952-1971 Barolos of Cantina Mascarello (Bar Boulud, NYC): I expected more from this wine. Not bad, but should have been drunk earlier. Sour cherries. Some elegance, but thin.
