Definitely an overrating but I freaking love this wine.

It's simultaneously subtle and punchy, it has hints of... orange? and it has just a bit of smokiness to make you slow down and appreciate it.

I will drink this wine again

This was an amazing wine. Who would of thought that a 32 year old Riesling that looked like soy sauce would have the balance and layers of flavors. Perfect pairing with some French blue.

Good right on opening, bit on the sweet side but not overwhelmingly so. Has a nice bright Burgundian finish to it that I quite like.

Have had this cellared for some time and decided it was time to open since the community said I should have finished this a year ago. It is beautiful wine still and had aged just fine. I see no reason why this can’t go another 2-4 years. It’s a bit rugged but that is from an abundance of Petit Verdot. I’m don’t believe further aging will help but it won’t hurt either. Suggest having with a heavy meal. It will stand up to almost anything.

Completely primary on the nose, and most of the fruits are bruised/over ripe. It begs the question "was this meant to age 3 years?". Grapefruit, over ripe/bruised white nectarine, over ripe/bruised melon, over ripe/bruised apple...you get the picture. Intensity of aromas is medium +. The palate is pretty consistent with the nose; adding wet stone and a nuttiness that I think comes from bottle age. Intensity of flavors is medium.

Medium + body with medium + acid. Detectable alcohol. This probably should have been drank a year ago; but it's still drinkable now. I can't say the bottle age really did it any favors, however.

The oak/vanillin in this wine is the first thing noticeable. It is cloyingly sweet. There is minimal tannins. I ordered this at a restaurant to accompany my ribeye which was tasty but not with this. No one would mistake this for right bank Bordeaux or Duckhorn 3 Palms and this is what maligned the California Merlot wine industry in Sideways. Sorry had a margarita to save my meal

Updated review. 5 more years down and this has really mellowed with age. Great depth of flavor. That tobacco taste I get from a lot of Firestone wines has greatly diminished.

The nose had a bit more lemon citrus, maybe a bit less floral. The body was acidic, bouncy. However, there wasn’t enough flavor in the palate for me and there was also something that tasted odd to me at the end. I’m too much of a noob to know what it might have been. I don’t think it was flawed, just something I didn’t like. Importer (?) is Foley Food and Wine Society. Haven’t heard of them before. That always worries me a little.

Friday at the strand (Strand Cellars, Croydon): "Served blind.
Meaty, savoury, red and black fruits are a little dried out, sweet spice, a touch of herbaceousness, mushroom, earth. Medium plus intensity acidity, a tiny sour touch to the fruit which proves meaty and red hued, a little tannic whisper, smidge of tomato leaf. Long.
I guessed mid 70's Burgundy, possibly Nuits St George"

Solid blend. Signature Firestone tobacco/earth notes on the pallette. At this poi t, it has aged nicely and give rounded dark fruits with a bit of sweet. There is tang on the back end, which leaves you with a subpar finish.

Drinkable, but not one that I went wow.

30x California 1978: So many wines from this great Californian vintage at the age of 45 certainly qualifies as a “once in a lifetime” event. A few observations: 1) The quality was very high (almost all my ratings above 90pts). And only four faulty wines (2x corked, 2x over the hill/flawed, sadly those two were the Ridge Monte Bello and the Phelps Insignia). 2) The wines are ready to drink, the tannins have melted but the tension and freshness remain high - across the board. 3) There is still lots of fruit left and I was surprised how most wines didn’t show lots of tertiary aromas (find me the Bdx 1982 without tertiary aromas!). IMO, more than a handful of the wines could continue to improve for a few years. 4) Style wise, these are obviously quite different from today’s Napa wines with much less ripeness and more mineral accents. But hardly any wine we had would be mistaken for a Bordeaux in a blind tasting (unlike 80s/90s Dominus). 5) Best reds: Inglenook Limited Cask, Beaulieu GDL Reserve, Stags Leap Cask 23 4.5l (all 96pts), Heitz Bella Oaks, Simi Reserve, Stag’s Leap Cask 23 0.75l (all 95pts). The best wine overall, however, was the magical Late Harvest Riesling from Phelps (98pts).

TN: Expressive nose, dark cherry liquor, a slight touch of heat, herbs, some minerality. Pleasant but probably a bit too hot. On the palate much better behaved, round and harmonious, expressive dark berries, earthy, herbal and mineral components mix well and create a good balance. The tannins melted, but good tension remains, medium+ acidity to keep it fresh. This is a very good showing and compared to Paso wines these days, this is much less ripe and shows much more restraint, even though it was probably the only wine showing a touch of heat on the nose.

California 1978 (Zunfthaus zur Waag, Zurich): Grand tasting of 1978 California wines, mostly from Napa. Main takeaways: i/ surprisingly high quality on average for wines that were not intended for such long-term aging with plenty of primary fruit left, ii/ but within the detail nonetheless a broad range with the worst few suffering from clear signs of fatigue while the best showed hardly age, iii/ top wines were Phelps Cab Sauv (97), Firestone Cab Sauv (95), and Beaulieu George de Latour Private Reserve (95). Full list sorted by score included in the tasting story.

Tasting note:
Mineral notes of flint and ash, earth and nice big bag of X-mas spice. Fruit of cassis, black currant and brambleberry confit. A peppery kick rounds off the bouquet. The palate adds leathery and tobacco notes. Tannins have molten away completely leaving nice and fresh acidity and great tension. Just a tiny bit of heat as the only point of critic really. This is a pretty complete wine that preserved nice muscle while offering the charm of age.

A bit more time in bottle has improved this as I hoped. Still not showing any dramatic notes of significant age, but does seem to hang together better and with a more attractive fruit profile. A really nice wine for the price, lacking the concentration and power of top tier, but otherwise a tasty California Cab that seems honest, balanced, and delicious.
