A 100% Škrlet vinified with natural yeasts in steel tanks with the lees. Bottled unfiltered. 12,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Very slightly hazy and somewhat youthful lemon-yellow color with faint greenish highlights. Relatively funky nose with moderately bretty aromas of Lambic beer and leather, lemony citrus fruits, some leesy tones, light sweeter notes of ripe yellow fruits, a little bit of phenolic spice and sappy herbal character, a sweeter hint of apple jam and a touch of waxy funk. The wine is ripe, somewhat neutral and slightly oily on the palate with a medium body. Despite its somewhat neutral overall flavors, the taste still comes across as quite intense with good sense of focus. There are flavors of red apples, some leesy notes of yeast, light bretty notes of leather and phenolic spice, a little bit of sappy herbal spice and a hint of stony minerality. The moderately high acidity feels balanced with the body and the flavors. The finish is dry, long and slightly funky with flavors of bretty leather and slightly leathery funk, some stony mineral tones, a little bit of waxy character, light leesy notes of yeast, a hint of ripe yellow apple and a tart touch of lemony citrus fruit.

In contrast to the previous bottle of this wine, which was somewhat reductive, but otherwise clean as a whistle, this bottle showed a somewhat noticeable streak of brett, lending the wine a distinct lambic-like quality and somewhat leathery overtones. And this wasn't a change for the worse - at least for me, as I'm not averse to any funky qualities. Instead the bretty characteristics intermingled quite nicely with the bright fruit flavors and leesy notes, making this feel not unlike a Croatian Muscadet with a small dose of brett. A nice effort, although it seems obvious there is some bottle variation going on here. Good value at 11€.

100% Škrlet made from selected grapes that have attained high enough ripeness, fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, 20% of the wine macerated with the skins for a week. Aged in stainless steel for 12 months (9 months on the lees), bottled unfiltered. 14% alcohol.

Slightly hazy golden yellow color with a subtly peachy-orange core. Fresh, fragrant and subtly sweetish nose with somewhat waxy aromas of apricots, Earl Grey-like notes of bergamot, some perfumed floral tones, a little bit of leathery funk, light nuances of sweet exotic spices and a hint of quince jelly. The wine is lively, firm and crunchy on the palate with a medium body and dry flavors of waxy funk, spicy red apple, some resinous and slightly bitter phenolic notes, a little bit of black tea, light leathery notes, a hint of steely minerality and a touch of clayey earth. The structure relies almost completely on the fresh, high acidity as the tannins are very light and lend only a little bit of firmness to the texture without any noticeable grip. The finish is dry, fresh and subtly grippy with flavors of waxy funk, steely minerality, some notes of beeswax, light perfumed and subtly bitter notes of long-steeped Earl Grey tea, a hint of stony minerality and a sweeter touch of wizened peaches.

A sophisticated, harmonious and pleasantly restrained Škrlet that is either a very fresh and light, white-wine-ish orange wine or a relatively substantial, extracted and savory white wine. Although the skin-macerated component is relatively small, it's impact is quite big and the wine comes across as very amber wine-like, although still retaining the freshness and minerality from the white Škrlet portion. A balanced and well-made effort that combines the best parts of a skin-contact white and a white Škrlet. Still very youthful in style, I can see this wine benefiting from further aging, although it drinks really well already now. Priced according to its quality at 21€.

A 100% Škrlet vinified with natural yeasts in steel tanks with the lees. Bottled unfiltered. 12,5% alcohol.

Rather pale straw-yellow color. Characterful, spicy and slightly waxy nose that starts off with a little bit of flatulent reduction that fortunately blows off quite quickly. Aromas of slivered almonds, some dried herbs, a little bit of smoky reduction, light notes of ripe yellow fruits and a hint of leesy yeast. The wine is dry, balanced and quite neutral on the palate with a medium body and clean, fresh flavors of stony minerality, some waxy tones, a little bit of fresh red apple, light herbal notes, a hint of mineral water and a touch of leesy yeast. The overall impression is neutral but not dilute, coming across as something not unlike a Croatian Muscadet. Balanced, quite high acidity. The finish is fresh and somewhat neutral with moderately long flavors of red apple, some stony minerality, a little bit of fresh white peach, light crunchy notes of white currant and a hint of mineral water.

A somewhat neutral and slightly underwhelming but also enjoyably fresh, balanced and mineral little white. Nothing too challenging or particularly memorable, but nothing to complain about either. All in all, a nice, bright and palate-cleansing little everyday white. Priced according to its quality at 11€.

A blend of Škrlet (75%) and Chardonnay (25%), hence the name. A brief maceration of a few hours to a day with the skins prior to the spontaneous fermentation on indigenous yeasts. Aged for 9 months in stainless steel. Vinified with very little to no SO2. 12,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Medium-deep golden-yellow color with an evolved, coppery core. Beguiling nose of gasoline, honeycomb, some ripe red apple, a little bit of waxy funk, light floral notes of honeysuckle and a hint of clay. Lovely! The wine is dry, somewhat waxy and quite intense on the palate with complex flavors of beeswax, some floral notes of honeysuckle, a little bit of leathery funk, light crunchy notes of fresh red apples and quince, a more exotic hint of mango and an evolved touch of caramel. The overall feel is quite structured, thanks to the racy acidity - typical of Škrlet - and a slightest hint of tannic tug on the gums. The finish is long, savory and ever-so-slightly grippy with a complex aftertaste of fresh red apples and some evolved bruised pear tones, a little bit of beeswax, light exotic notes of mango and quince, a phenolic hint of resinous character and a developed touch of caramel.

A very distinctive, compelling and balanced Croatian white. My first or second guess was Croatia, but I couldn't say whether this was a white wine or a skin-contact white - and it's not a wonder, if you check how the wine was made! Definitely not your typical run-of-the-mill wine, but nothing super-weird or particularly funky either. There is just lots of things going on here. Starting to show some evolved signs now, at 5 years of age, but it still isn't mature or old in any way. I wouldn't age this extensively, but I can imagine it will continue to improve for a few years more and keep a bit longer. A unique and very rewarding wine, a great purchase at 15€.

Croatian white wine from Moslavina: Skrlet. 12,5% alcohol.

Pale golden color.

Aromas and flavors of apple, lemon, butter and vanilla.

Dry. Medium body. Medium acidity. Unbalanced. Some structure. Almost no complexity.

Medium finish with apple, bitterness and alcohol.

Probably the first Skrlet ever exported to a Scandinavian country. Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it drinkable? Well. Probably at it’s best when mixed with mineral water, as the custom in Moslavina prescribes. 75/100

Tasted at wine bar Bastion 19 in Zagreb. Nose has an almost overpowering banana note (natural yeasts I guess) to go along with red apple skins and clove spice. Palate is more red apples, strawberry jam and tons of acidity and minerality to keep you coming back for more. This is perhaps a wine that you need to be in the mood for to enjoy but I am in the mood today so bravo!

Tasted at wine bar Bastion 19 in Zagreb. Nose obscured by cigarette smoke but palate is fresh and crisp with red apples, underripe peaches and a hint of rosemary and lavender. Very delightful for drinking by the pool on its own or with some fresh shellfish.

Medium deep golden yellow color. Rich, autolytic nose, which reminds me of Champagne with its roasted almond and faint toast aromatics. Fruit-wise, there are notes of ripe apple and citrus peel. Dry, medium-bodied in the mouth with moderate acidity. Flavors of ripe citrus fruit, some hay and a little yeasty, Champagne-like autolytic nuances. A bit thin and short finish with flavors of ripe citrus fruits, quince, some apple and a touch of autolytic yeast.

Very interesting and refreshing white, that is on the other hand rather simple and bucolic, but on the other hand very unique and characterful with its pronounced autolytic aromas and flavors. Very interesting effort; I am not totally in love with it, but I am more positively than negatively surprised by it. 23 Kn (3,03€) for a 10 cl glass in veggie restaurant Nishta, Dubrovnik.

Golden color. Concentrated, elegant wine with quince on the nose and broad, bright flavors of yellow delicious apple and pineapple guava (aka feijoa). Presents like a high-end California chardonnay (Hanzell, say). Outstanding.
