A great contestant in the 2016 Swiss pinot noir battle of the bottles March 2024 at Alpenclub in Engelberg.

95 for Studach‘s 2016 Pinot noir - open for business, gorgeous nose, multiple layers of fruit on the palate and a mid-length finish. A really great wine getting into prime drinking window.
Donatsch‘s Unique 2016 a close second at 94. Great fruit as well, notably in the mouth. Just is still a bit more closed on the nose. Takes time to open up and show its sophistication. Possibly the three hours given were not enough.
Gantenbein 2016 somewhat disappointing in the flight, as still quite closed and one-dimensional in the nose and on the palate. 92 ? 93 ? This wine still needs much time.
Two runners up with Maison Carree’s Hauterive 2016 (93) and Bachtobel’s nr 4 (92-93). Both great to drink, Carree with a bit better structure and length.
Overall all great wines of a good vintage that are coming into life now and will be a pleasure to drink well into the next decade.

(100% Savagnin Blanc, 13% Alkohol) Mittleres Gelb.

Beautiful red berry, sour cherry and strawberry fruit. Floral top notes immediately draw you in. This is followed by impressive versatility, adding meaty notes of bacon fat and marginally earthy notes. The palate has welcoming acidity, fruit-forward aromas and soft a soft texture. A strong wine in this price segment.

Robe jaune dorée. Nez classique d'un joli chardonnay, assez puissant. Des fruits à chair blanche, du citron, de la fleur blanche, un léger côté grillé. En bouche c'est dense, le fruit est là, très bon et très long!

PnP. Starts a bit shy and requires 15 to 30 minutes to open. On the nose apples, quince and a touch of honey, on the palate quite lush now, medium acidity, good depth and long finish. Was very nice with food, got some bitterness with more air and when drinking it on its own.

A last glass on the next day was similar with an additional touch of white stone fruit and the bitterness was was gone.

Much better than two years ago and shows that it has still some good years ahead. Quite different to all Savagnin I have tasted up to now, reminds me a bit to the Rhone wines. Unfortunately my last bottle, would be interesting to see how it develops within the next couple of years.

Jolie robe rubis.

PnP, then drunk over dinner.
Well balanced and with good freshness. I love this style of Chasselas, which aims at lightness. After a bit of time in the glass without moving, it showed wonderful notes of ripe and delicate sweet fruit. Otherwise classic, with typical, light savoriness.

Raspberries, pepper, lots of leather. Nose just as delicate as the palate even if slightly overwhelming after a while. A remarkably pleasant drink. Wouldn't wait much longer to drink this though.

PnP, then followed over three evenings. Very intense and interesting nose, with Pinot fruit and a touch of a green note, which is uplifting. During the course of the first evening it developed and became more and more refined and beguiling. On the palate it is quite bold and with a good structure, with rather firm but fine-grained tannins. It has a sweet and spicy taste. A Pinot noir of personality and overall very good. And promising for the future.
Update: even on the fourth evening was showing well: it has lost some of its boldness and gained elegance. Flavors moved towards licorice. Or more precisely, a mix of spices, ferrous and earthy notes. The last sips were simply wonderful.
Great promise for the future!

Fruit of orange juice, red apple with a mineral base and fresh herbs. The palate felt like there was some residual sugar as well as CO2. Very acidity-driven despite a slightly buttery texture. Felt as if there were very early signs of premox. Not necessarily nutty notes yet, but did leave an impression of Sherry. Not good…

A very nice Chasselas from the Neuchatel region. Much lighter than the Chasselas wines I've usually had from the Lake Geneva region with only 11.2% alc. But still with enough presence on the palate to make it tasty. Hint of age in there but still a pleasant acidity to keep it lively.

Opened two hours before dinner and served at ~16°C. On the nose red and blue berries and sour cherries, on the palate pure and fresh, medium bodied with good depth and medium+ length.

Very different and a good step up compared with the bottle we had three years ago, the rustic touch with the notes from the stems and the tannic structure are gone, it appears even more youthful now and gives a very elegant impression, 91-92. Matched perfectly with the flat iron (beef) we had. Drink now or within the next 6 to 10 years.

My first Oeil de Perdrix. I wasn't expecting much, but it left a very good impression. The character of the pinot noir, in a fresh and fruity rosé, and at a decent price. I can't compare with other producers, but I think la Maison Carrée managed to produce a very nice wine, here.

2018 La Maison Carrée Savagnin Blanc

Auvernier more

3/14/2023 - prasm Likes this wine: 90 points

Recently I’ve been drawn into a couple conversations, both personal and on the internet, about the origins of the Gewurztraminer grape. The common theory is it originated in the Alto-Adige region of north-east Italy near Tramin. In reality, DNA research has proven that Gewurztraminer is a clone of Savagnin Blanc which originated in either north-east France (Alsace) or south-west Germany (Pfalz). Jancis Robinson’s Wine Grapes book, in addition to referencing the DNA research, refers to Gewurztraminer as a highly aromatic clone of Savagnin Blanc.

By coincidence I happened to have both a Gerwurztraminer (2017 Elena Walch from Alto Adige) and a this Savagnin Blanc (from Lake Neuchatel Switzerland – less than 100 miles south of both Alsace and Pfalz) which I decided to taste side by side for comparison.

The tasting was conducted in two parts over 3 days on day 1 and day 3. The wines were stored in a Somm du Vine over the tasting period.

Day 1 impressions: Initially the aromatic differences were very obvious with the Gewurtz showing pronounced intensity aromas of pear, quince, and grapefruit while the Savagnin showed just medium intensity aromas dominated by grapefruit with undertones of pear. In the mouth the Gewurtz came across as much rounder and slightly more intense versus the Savagnin with was more linear and focused. As the wines warmed in the glass over the 1.5 hour tasting period the Gerwurz started to come apart a bit while the Savagnin stayed the course. Due to the degradation of the Gerwurtz I would say I preferred the Savagnin, surprisingly. It’s easy to see the similarities in these two wines, particularly on the palate with similar fruit profiles with emphasis on different ends.

Day 3 impressions: Overall both wines have held up superbly with little noticeable difference versus day 1. My impressions are unchanged, I slightly prefer the Savagnin. It’s more linear and focused and seemed to improve as it warmed nearer to room temperature. At 13% abv versus 14% abv for the Gewurtz it’s slightly lighter bodied and more structured. The Gewurtz was bigger in the mouth with a nice creamy mouth-feel and performs great at 55 degrees, better than the Savagnin in fact.

In the end I can definitely believe these are just different expressions of the same grape variety. I would score each evenly, though the Gewurtz at serving temperature was a cut above the Savagnin the Savagnin was more consistent as it warmed. In summary, I was surprised at how well the much lesser known Savagnin Blanc performed here. I recommend trying one, if you can find it.

Much better than the last bottle. This one confirms the excellent quality that I remembered from the initial tasting. Full of fruit, even a bit opulent for a pn but good tannin structure with nice acidity to balance. Complexity stems from forest floor and truffle undertones.
