2019 La Pelle Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

Champers and Napa Cabs Blind - Fun Times! (Chateau Simms): I believe this wine received about a 2 hour Slo-O.

This was in a blind line up of some very prestigious 2019 Napa reds (and one 2016 thrown in), specifically:

2019 MacDonald
2019 Kinsman Eades La Voleuse Du Chagrin
2019 Kinsman Eades Anjea Sleeping Lady Vineyard
2019 Colgin Tychson Hill
2019 Realm Absurd
2019 Scarecrow
2019 Harlan
2019 Myriad Elysian
2019 La Pelle Res
2019 Magnificent 7
2019 Cliff Lede Songbook
2016 Colgin Tychson Hill

2019 La Pelle Reserve - Another example of varying palates. Others thought this a little sweet. I found it quite tight still and not showing much. Tannins were still grippy and while there was a nice dark fruit core and dark cocoa, this wine seemed like it needs a lot more time. Solid 95. I recommend holding for 5-7 years or giving a long decant (6 hours minimum).

Not sure what happened here, but blind, this came off with a bit of a candied fruit nose. Not quite Caymus or Myriad, but it was not what I typically see from La Pelle. Bottle variation?

Eyes Wide Shut - Day 2 (A quiet place): Nose: Sweet, ripe red fruits, and deep earth.

Palate: Also ripe on the palate, deep earth with a nice bitterness. There is a soul of dark minerals, giving the flavors a bit more depth.

It drank fine, but for some reason, this gave off the impression that it was a little lazy? As if, it could've given off a bit more. Could've benefited from more air for sure. With the initial ripeness that I detected, I am just truly thankful it did not have that manipulated feel/taste.

The nose of this wine is enticing - I could tell that I was in for a treat. Dark ruby fruit - currants, dark cherry, and blackberry. Smooth mid-palate with a beautiful purity and decent depth/concentration - medium/medium plus body. Nice rich/vibrant flavors of cassis, some spice/herbs, a little black tea, and a mineral/graphite component. Decent finish but not overly long nor deep - I believe the finish will benefit from some more time. Slow ox during the day for around ten hours and drank out of a decanter for a couple more. Improved a little with time. In my opinion, quite a step-up from their entry level cab - although I’ve only had the 2016 and 2021 vintages. No surprise of the 95 rating from WA and also no surprise that the vineyard sits next to Dr. Crane on the western side of Saint Helena. 100% cab.

Curious in light of the 94 rating from Lisa Perrotti-Brown and 93+ rating from Dunnuck. According to the Winery, a blend of their six Bordeaux style vineyards with an emphasis from four Napa Valley AVA designations in Coombsville, Oak Knoll, Oakville, and Saint Helena. Purple fruit - currants, dark cherry, blackberry, and a little blueberry. Smooth mid-palate with solid depth/concentration. Nice vibrant flavors of cassis, some spice/licorice, cocoa, and a little mineral/graphite component. However, the finish was lacking - short/not much depth. Decanted for four hours and drank over a couple more. Improved a little with time. In my opinion, closer to the 91+ rating from WA at this youthful stage. 96% cab sauvignon and 4% petit verdot.

Decanted a portion with stir and it opened after an hour. Vacuvin’d the rest. Same results on day 4. Tried PnP on day 3 but it didn’t really open well after 1-2 hrs (give this air). Rose petal, lilac, raspberry on the nose. Black cherry, raspberry, hint of dark chocolate and vanilla, with 30-35 sec finish. Nice pairing with sausage pasta and likely great with steak as well. Plush style of cabernet.

Other than perhaps MacDonald, these are the best QPR in Napa by a mile. It's incredible the quality Maayan puts in the bottle for the price. Combine that with a fabulous vintage like 2021 and you have a no brainer, back the truck up purchase.

All I can say is WOW. This wine is built like a skyscraper. Mostly a combination of St Helena and Coombsville sites, which are incredible in their own right, this is one of the most serious wines you'll taste coming out of Napa. Big, structured, super pure, bone dry and with what appears to be hallmark 2021 purity, this needs to head to the back of the cellar for a while. So much is going on in this wine, from brilliant fruit intensity to super savory, grainy, earth driven flavors, it is already very complex. Finish goes on for days and is just amazing. Collectors vintage for the Reserve and honestly for the price is one of the best possible values in the entire valley.

The Red Hen is the reddest, brightest and probably lightest bodied of the three SVD's. That's not to say it lacks concentration by any stretch, as all these wines are packed with concentrated flavors. Super elegant, with great acidity and refined tannins, this wine stands out as the most mineral driven, fresh and ready to drink at this stage. It shows off great purity, floral notes and just has that "yum" factor. Best vintage for it I've tasted.

The St Helena/Alluvium is typically my favorite of the SVD's, probably because I am a sucker for a bit more fruit and rich intensity. This vintage is the most serious edition I've tasted, in that it's age worthiness is unreal. Purple fruit with fabulous blackberry notes and deep concentration, the tannins are super grippy and drying, with serious structure hemming in a deep core of savory flavors. The finish is insanely long and it'll suck all the mositure right out of your mouth. What a monumental year for this wine. Much like the Coombsville, it needs to sleep for a few years and it's built for a 30+ year life.

The Coobsville/Ceniza is lights out this year. A total "wow" wine. Dark and serious, this is big, grainy and powerful with a massive core of scorched earth intensity. The tannins are chalky and pronounced, with huge structure and great complexity. Very savory with all the herbal flavors you'd expect from this site. Finish is crazy long and mineral laced. Truly a great wine!

Dark floral aromas of purple and black flowers, dark and black fruits with a scent of ripeness but with a mix of bitter minerals as well, showing a nice contrast. Wet stones and dried earth also appear on the nose.

Dark, almost unripe, black cherries on the palate with dark chunks (not literally) of graphite, similar wet stone from the nose, and damp earth. The tannin from damp, frayed oak and steeped tea on the back end really allow the dark fruits to grab onto grab onto something, allowing it to linger on the finish.

This shows fresher, bright and more swift on the palate when tasted at a cooler temp. I preferred this at a warmer room temp as it allowed the wine to show its dark and broodish side. Also give this a chance with some air if it does not show well immediately. The wine opens up much better as it warms up a bit. Really solid. Spend your time on this, follow this into the night. A notch better than when I last had this. 94-95

Initially the nose was consumed with pine needles and juniper, over the day this began to blow off, cherry, strawberry, roasted meat, good acidity and balance. I’ll leave my remaining bottles for a couple years.

Let’s start with I normally like CSIMMS notes…
He has a few good points on this wine..but inaccurate
in my humble opinion.. first off this is 13.5 % abv.
Many good fruit earthy notes that match his notes but it has a syrupy quality that is the main reason I don’t buy a lot of cali syrahs..it’s a bit tiresome after a few sips … trying too hard to extract the fruit with no attention to balance…
It ends cloying and jammy and syrupy..
I give it a 89 but reserve the right to change my mind on future bottles as this was a PnP

Drinking well for being so young. Very approachable. Deep red fruit with loam and stone. Nicely balanced with structure and integration, character and strength despite being a blend.

Newer to this offering but a big fan thus far, seems like great QPR. Great to have to keep hands off things less giving in youth. 94

Decanted 20 minutes or so before first taste, maybe still just a bit tight, but pretty ready to go. Poured a deep ruby purple. Nose of muddled black fruit and sagey underbrush, lots of black fruited goodness on the palate, maybe a little cigar leaf in there too, leading into a grippy but smooth finish with a hit of mouthwatering salinity. Perfect with steak at Peter Luger Las Vegas ($50 corkage).

How much is this wine again?? I paid $64 each. Crazy QPR. Hard, maybe impossible, to top this in the <$100 Napa cab category.

Hard Seltzers vs. Hard Liquor vs. Wine: N: Aromas of deep earth and also as if it were somehow roasted (not heavy like scorched earth), dull black fruits with a hint of freshness, and light graphite with damp light oak.

P: Dark and bitter red fruits with a highlight of lightly bright blue fruits that provides an overall freshness to the fruits. Swiftly scribbled graphite, light on the oak, with earth and drying, steeped tea on the finish.

A fresh drinking cab that doesn’t hit heavy on the palate. 93-94

Hard Seltzers vs. Hard Liquor vs. Wine: N: Aromas lean towards tropical aromas of deep and earthy pineapple, and scents of whole guavas. Bales of hay, a sprinkling of lime zest, and notes of washed stones.

P: Imagine if there was a hybrid fruit that was a crossbreed between a pineapple and a cantaloupe, having the fresh crispness of a pineapple while also having the comforting, ripe cantaloupe flavors. Freshly cut green grass brings the swiftness on the palate down a bit, without completely slowing everything down. Light notes of damp neutral oak, prickly tree bark and bitter minerals on the finish.

Great balance here while still delivering a deep pitch of flavors. The deep flavors of this chard somehow manages its flavor profile that isn't heavy or weighty in terms of flavor and body. Restrained freshness, enough to stay exciting.

Hard Seltzers vs. Hard Liquor vs. Wine: N: Fresh lime zest, tall stalks of dried straw, pineapple rinds, a squeeze of lime juice, white berries and crushed dried limestone gravel.

P: Light pastry treats like a lemon tart wrapped with fresh acidity, clean and dried tree bark, with bitter lime zest and gently spiced, but clean, minerals trailing into the finish. On day 3, there are notes as if this has gone through some malo, showing a touch of butteriness and airy creaminess.

This has such an exciting and fresh nose, with an awesome swiftness and crispiness to match on the palate. Serve at a cooler temp for a more pronounced freshness. This may very well be a go-to sauvignon blanc for me. Would’ve loved some raw Cherrystone clams or oysters with this.
