2018 Tabalí Pinot Noir Talinay Pai

Limarí Valley more

4/21/2024 - snamnoum@gmail.com wrote: 92 points

Very pale and translucent, almost looks like a Tavel rosé.

The nose is predominantly of earth first then high toned red fruit. Aromas of mushroom, dry cedar, leather, forest floor, kirsch, raspberry, cranberry, and flint. Chambolle musigny nose for sure.

On the palate the wine is quite light and delicate. Tannins are very gentle and acidity is medium. Finish lacks a bit in complexity but this is really a stellar, balanced, delicious wine. Excited to see what these vineyards can produce in 10+ years.

More Burgundian than the Tolpuddle, 91/93

When Tolpuddle feels a bit like a great Sonoma or SBC kind of sweet yet savory Pinot Noir, The Talinai looks a bit more spicy and earthy, in a Cote de Beaune style.

Nose of crimson cherry, sour cherry, leafy notes, mint, ...

Palate as well is a little more austere and restrained, but salivating and saltiness are premium features here.

Great salty wine with more tannins and a stricter style.

Will age well, even better if it was scew caped !

Man, am I loving Chile lately. This cool climate Pinot Noir is ruby trending to garnet in color. Upon first pour, there are aromas of walnuts, cherries, and strawberries. After getting some air, the wine opens up with medium(+) intensity scents of dark cherries, cranberries, red plums, sea breezes, and forest floor. Medium alcohol, dry, with medium tannin, acidity and medium(-) body, the medium(+) intensity flavor profile matches the aromas with a nice minerality and a medium finish. This was a wonderful compliment to homemade Mac & Cheese with ham and peas, and has a great QPR at under $25.

The label on this wine says Robert Parker gave it a 95. That in my opinion is too high, but I would give it a 91 or 92. Great body and finish. The nose is just about perfect for me and the acidity is great throughout. Ii is a wine that after dinner I wanted just a little more.

Translucent, ruby with an almost tawny tint. The tawny is no bad sign: the wine is in beautiful condition. The nose is aromatic, very attractive; the palate is light but very persistent, the length mostly supported by acidity. Flavours of raspberries and notes of savoury briar. A very sophisticated wine. It's impossible not to think of a delicate Burgundy, possibly Chambolle-Musigny. It seems to me this is a wine of great potential, though whether the potential lies in this vintage, with further ageing, or future vintages, I'm not sure. Whichever, it is certainly one worth watching. For the moment, it has a linearity rather than an expansiveness (at least within the first couple of hours of opening) which keeps it at the excellent level rather than exceptional. It was too delicate for beef stew, and I set it aside; better by itself, or with mild cheese or maybe poached chicken. 12.5%, cork.

Red berry and earthy notes leap out of the glass. Light oak and smoke notes.

Medium-bodied with both power and elegance on the palate. Sweet-sour fruit dominance with some tartness but ends on a meaty note. Very much alive!

Deep ruby.

Pronounced on the nose with violet, blackcurrant, green bell pepper, mint, blackcurrant leaf, quince, graphite, cedar and leather. Developing.

Pronounced and dry on the palate. High acidity, high tannins, full body, high alcohol, medium plus finish.

Can drink now but has potential for aging.

Herbaceous notes dominate the wine. Still enjoyable but needed more fruit to back it up.

I might have drunk this too young. Really quite delicious now, especially if you like full on lemon/limey acidity, minerality, salinity, a hint of gunsmoke and some creamy oak. But it feels like all of these elements will develop and knit together better in a year or three, with potential for a 92+ score

yellow colour and mildly viscous in the glass. the nose is more delicate than one might expect for Viognier, with a leading mineral note that opens to subtle tropical fruits with hints of chirimoya, citric notes, and floral accents. in the mouth an acidic astringency runs from entry to finish, but subsides mid-palate for the white orchard and stone fruit to emerge with honeyed touches and wet-stone minerality. good length, if still a tad austere.

while enjoyable in and of itself, it seems to want to resemble a local Sauv. Blanc more than being a Viognier, with the exuberance of the varietal rather emasculated… i suppose much of that has something to do with local tastes and critical opinion (which, in whites, tends to favour highly acidic and rather austere wines). i do wonder if a bit of bottle age would tamp down a tad the acidity and allow the lovely underlying fruit to step forward a bit more.

13.5% AbV; 100% Viognier from the Espinal Vineyard in the Limarí Valley; no wood contact; screw cap closure.

100% Malbec. Planted at 1,600 meter high elevation in the Andes in 2011, so young vines. Volcanic soils. Stainless steel fermented with 18 months in French oak. Don’t think much if any was new oak. There’s nice acidity and minerality to this wine but along with typical Malbec notes of dark purple fruit and violet notes. There’s a bit of chocolate and minor oak notes, but it’s well integrated. Behaves much younger than it is. Over time, the fruit and floral notes really start to open up but still more restraint and acidity than an average Argentinian Malbec for example. Still think it will develop some more. Although production has increased since this vintage, only like 200-400 cases were being made around this time. 92+

Shorter decant (30-45 minutes) and paired with cheese board. Decanter quarterly wine club selection.

Very nice and complex pinot without being too weighty. Paired really well with the hornbacher cheese and not bad with the garlic goat cheese spread. Notes of raspberry, mushroom, a little ash/tobacco. Nothing overpowering, this wine is very balanced with a good medium mouthfeel.

I stick to comments below, first I was reluctant to buy it as it is a lot more expensive than the "little" one... Talinay. But it's all worth the price now.

Had it in two times, first Coravin for pro tasting, then 3 weeks after open it and served. It might have helped a bit. Wine was stored laying after Coravin.

Nose is obvious of whole bunch, raspberry, spices, earth, and a bit of vegetal/spice... smoky and very little oak is smelled here. Intricate, nicely restraint.

Palate is vibrant and fresh, with a sharp floral direction, people in the comment section outlined saltiness or sapidity, it's there, and it takes the wine to another level of complexity and savoriness. Great wine, extremely enjoyable, and so well made.

Hats off

Very pale straw, with the faintest shimmer of green. Sherbet lemon on the nose and an attractive leesiness. On the palate the first impression is a whack of lemony acidity, and that is probably my second impression too. It's bracing! But somehow it all hangs together and gradually the underlying pristine fruit starts to assert itself. It sees ten months of oak, apparently, but at this age at least that's hardly perceptible. The lees influence is more apparent, but all is secondary to the citrus hit. In its style it's fantastic, but it is an extreme style. I've read comparisons to Chablis here, but I've never had a Chablis anywhere near as dry and linear as this. The only Chardonnay I can think of that's comparable is a young Kumeu River Estate. 13%, agglomerate cork.

I tried this first in Chile a few months back asking the somm at an excellent Peruvian/Japanese restaurant to bring me the lowest alcohol Pinot. I was immediately enamoured and felt it showed like a Mugnier Chambolle. Often you have a bottle while away and it tastes good. Then you get back home and it’s not that great anymore. I ordered a few back home and put them blind against various good red Burgs and it held its own (more than once). It shows well out of Zalto Burgs, it takes well to air. It’s low alcohol at 12.5 pct, slight reduction on the nose, quite brambly and introvert at first, serene in a way, Chambollle-esque, salty and just draws you in. It’s not a “saltimbocca” fruit display, it’s more like an iceberg where you see a little and feel a lot lies beneath. Amazingly the vines were planted 2012 only, so they were merely 6 years old to make this very first vintage here. Viticulture information can be found on back label which is super useful. I would think that exciting times lie ahead as these vines mature. Possible to me known as the “Amoureuses” of Chile in 15 years? I have been drinking this one with abundance and never regretted a sip.

Very youthful and vigorous with minerally tart fruit coated in a buttery texture. Deliciously savoury, this is so understated and light years ahead of the grotesques we’ve had to endure from this part of the world. At last a South American Chardonnay that actually fits its cool climate billing. A great find by the Society’s wine buyer. CHP 88 pts

88+ Electric juice from Limari that reminds me a lot of Trapi del Bueno's Chilean Patagonian Chardonnay

From a vineyard 12km from the ocean, but on the east side of the coastal mountain range, giving some protection.

Chablis style on the fruit and structure (citrus, zippy, mouthwatering PH of only 3.1), but has a flare of subtle toasted oak. Has the best of both worlds. Could do with a bit more fruit concentration, but this is very classy stuff. Will push past 90+ in a few years for sure.
