2012 Palmina Nebbiolo Rocca

Santa Barbara County more

5/18/2024 - cnr128 Likes this wine: 90 points

This one needs a lot of time to open up…like 2 days. At first, almost undrinkable but after a double aeration it was starting to come around. Next day, drinking much better and by the 3rd day. It tasted like a Nebbiolo. Not sure if more time in the bottle will change or if that’s just the nature of this particular vintage.

Zesty !! Still tasting great !!
Perfect composite cork easily removed once the wax seal was cracked. Pale straw color with good clarity. Consumed over three days, Vac-U-Vin and refrigerated. Flavors and aromas of citrus, lemon, lichee, and honeysuckle that were more apparent as it warmed. Tasty, age worthy blend of 25% Arneis, 25% Riesling, 25% Tocai Friulano, and 25% Vermentino. No more bottles remaining in my cellar. Excellent fruit and winemaking by Steve Clifton.

Still tasting great !!
A nearly perfect composite cork, easily removed after over a dozen years. Consumed over four days, vac-u-vined and refrigerated. Subida is a special unique wine made from Tocai Friulano left to macerate on the skins for 36 days. Dark straw color, nearly orange, unfined and unfiltered with low clarity. Aromas of poached pears and honey suckle. Full bodied fresh flavors of peach and lychee with a medium mineral finish. Best as it approaches room temperature. Excellent fruit from Honea Vineyard and inspired winemaking by Steve Clifton.

Decanted an hour before dinner, this wine had a very light color and cherries and plum nose. The flavor also showed cherry and plum, with a hint of mint on the finish.

Still tasting great !! Flawlessly aged and a truly glorious expression of Lagrein !!
The composite cork was perfect after over a decade and a half in the bottle. Consumed at dinner with friends. This Lagrein shows varietally accurate fruit and acid. Inky purple color with little to no oxidation, clarity medium. Aromas and flavors of plum, black cherry, and black mission fig with a touch of spice. A medium to long finish on this flavorful Lagrein. This wine was delicious upon release and still has many more years of life left. Unfortunately, I have no more bottles of this vintage in my cellar. Great fruit from Honea Vineyard and great winemaking from Steve Clifton.

Holy mole! This has evolved so nicely. Had this a few years back and wasn’t impressed but now, the wine is singing. Pomegranate is prominent but there’s also raspberry and cranberry. Medium body, hints of earth…perhaps some smoke. There is a lot going on here. This is everything a Sangio should be…and the finish goes on and on…and on. Probably one of the last great Palminas. Sorry to see this bottle end.

Dry cork after almost 19 years in the bottle, easily removed with the Durand. Brick colored exhibiting moderate oxidation. Dusty aromas of cedar and plum. Slightly out of balance flavors of rose petals, tar, strawberry, and tobacco.

I agree withy tasting notes of over 3+ years. This Barbera shows varietal accuracy, but needs food !!
The composite cork was saturated about 1/4 inch up after over a decade in the bottle, easily removed. Consumed at dinner with friends. This Barbera displays acidic dark fruit and had softened perfectly within an hour. Very dark ruby color with little to no oxidation, clarity good. Aromas of cherry, vanilla, licorice, and glycerin. Flavors of black cherry cola, fig, plum, and raspberry framboise. A medium to long finish on this flavorful Barbera. This age worthy wine has a few more years of life left and is tasting pretty good right now. Best consumed in < 12 hours. I still have a few in my cellar and will revisit soon to validate this tasting note.

Still tasting great; this Barolo cousin from California is excellent right now !! I agree with my tasting note of 5 months ago !! Flawlessly aged and a truly glorious expression of Nebbiolo; many try in the new world, but few succeed with this king of the Pedmont !!
The composite cork was perfect after a decade and a half in the bottle. Consumed at dinner with friends. This gently aged Nebbiolo showing varietally accurate fruit and acid. Ruby color with modest oxidation noted on the edges, clarity medium. Please be gentle, there is lots of sediment in this bottling. Aromas of plum, mushroom, and sandalwood. Flavors of plum, fig, and tar with a touch of spice. A medium to long finish on this flavorful Nebbiolo. This wine was delicious upon release and still has many more years of life left. Fortunately, I still have two more bottles of this vintage in my cellar and will revisit within a year to validate my tasting notes. Great fruit from Honea Vineyard and great winemaking from Steve Clifton.

I bought this wine and their standard Nebbiolo. Both wines are a mess. Too much acid… by far. We could not drink either wine and we LOVE Nebbiolo! I have yet to taste a really good California Nebbiolo. Actually, there are very few really good US Nebbiolos. The exception is Beaumont Cellars in Washington . Their 2020 vintage is not their best but still good. The 2016 and 2018 were/are excellent!! They’re close to a Barbaresco than a Barolo but the most credible example of West Coast Nebbiolos .

The composite cork was barely saturated about 1/4 inch after over a decade in the bottle, easily removed. Consumed over two days. This bottle represented varietal accuracy. Very dark ruby color with modest oxidation, clarity good. Aromas of cherry, vanilla, licorice, and glycerin. Flavors of black cherry cola, fig, plum, and raspberry framboise with a medium finish. The composite cork was perfect after a decade and a half in the bottle. Consumed over two days. Popped and poured this gently aged Nebbiolo showing varietally accurate fruit and acid. On day two, the wine had softened with increased depth and integrated complexity. Ruby color with modest oxidation noted on the edges, clarity medium. Be gentle, lots of sediment in this bottling. 2015 Produttori & Friends (Nella Kitchen & Bar, Los Olivos, CA): Served blind, this New World Nebbiolo showed pretty well. Fleshy and rich, with a bit more oak than I would like, and a sort of sawdust phenomenon in terms of the wine's texture.

Still the perfect pizza wine, this Barbera needs food !! The composite cork was saturated about half way up after over a decade in the bottle, easily removed. Consumed over two days. Popped and poured showing varietal accuracy. This Barbera started with acidic dark fruit on the first day and on day two the wine had softened almost too much near flabby dried fruit. Very dark ruby color with little to no oxidation, clarity good. Aromas of cherry, vanilla, licorice, and glycerin. Flavors of black cherry cola, fig, plum, and raspberry framboise. An interesting blend that is still tasting great !! I agree with my tasting note of a year ago.
After over a decade in the bottle the wax coated composite cork was easily removed. Consumed at dinner with friends. Garnet color with modest oxidation. Aromas of cherry compote, red licorice, some earthy hints of rose hips. Tastes of cranberry, pomegranate, and red plum with hints of tea and rhubarb. A blend of Nebbiolo (50%), Barbera (25%) and Syrah (25%) from vineyards in Santa Barbara County’. Great fruit and excellent winemaking from Steve Clifton. This was my last bottle of this vintage remaining in the cellar.
